What films would you like a Criterion of?

George McFly made the comment in my thread about the Sling Blade DVD that it needed a Criterion release and I couldn't agree more. But that got me thinking what other movies really deserve a Criterion release. Below are my suggestions.

Sling Blade - goes without saying

O Brother Where Art Thou - it crossed almost all boundaries

Mr. Smith Goes To Washington - my favorite JS film and a classic

Blade Runner - it set the standard

Psycho - possibly AH best film or most popular

I'd say 'The Insider'. Was a great film, and it fits the Criterion mould perfectly

All of those. PLUS...

FLASH GORDON (1980) - Eat it fuckers, its better than Armageddon.

BOTTLE ROCKET - I'm a completist.

STAR WARS (1977) - The unfucked-with version. I know, I know...a foolish pipedream...but its my wish-list.

Not my FAVORITE films by any means...but I just have them on the brain.

"trainspotting" and "the fisher king" would be nice as i know there were pretty nice criterion ld's of these two.

"the black hole"? that would be a would turned upside down

Trainspotting, Donnie Darko, and Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas are great choices (they're excellent films).

But let us not forget the Criterion release of Big Lebowski...now that's what I want

No, that's not my vote for The Way We Were...or Big.

There was a huge...HUGE thread like this last year. Actually, there were two. One, like this one, was all about what movies Criterion should release, and the other was about how Criterion chooses the movies they DO release, most notably with the Bay flicks (Armeggedon, The Rock). And they got ugly. Brother fought against brother. I believe Ken Burns is working on the miniseries for PBS...all of my posts were supposed to have been read by Jason Robards...but then the guy had to die on me, so his voiceover work was replaced with Jimme JJ Walker's.

Yes, it did get ugly......many casualties. Forum membership numbers still haven't recovered.

That said, I'd love to see "The Game" get the Criterion treatment.

Definitely Donnie Darko

Some others that would be cool under Criterion:

The 4th Man
A Room with a View
Aria
Amadeus
Being There
The Color Purple
The Comfort of Strangers
The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover
My Mother's Castle
Planet of the Apes (with Charleston Heston)
The Quiet Earth
The Reflecting Skin
Santa Sangre
Sirens

I agree with Manigrasso that these threads turn ugly. What starts out a "40 minute mission" seems to turn into an all-day fire fight, with much carnage resulting.

Criterion would make me happy if they merely issued DVD's of the stuff they previously did on laserdisc.

Eraserhead

Or at least something of David Lynch's. "Eraserhead" is my vote, it should be out there more. But "Mullholland Drive" would be nice, especially since Criterion would give it an extra!

Oooh yeah, just thought of The Pillow Book. I don't know how I coud forget that one. Its one of my favorites. The DVD is OK. I am just glad to have it. Beautiful film.

The other cool films would be The Baby of Macon and Prospero's Book.

Some other non Greenaway's to consider would be:

Welcome to the Dollhouse
Empire of the Sun
Raising Arizona
Titus (just in case, I mean the movie with Anthony Hopkins and Jessica Lange )
Gallipoli

not that its an important movie, but I'd really like to see Criterion tackle:

Pulse
the 80's flick with the killer electricity.

Why Criterion?
I've seen some of their discs? And they weren't that special.
People have asked for Raiders & Star Wars...come on, once Lucasfilm releases these on DVD, they'll be better than any disc that Criterion would release...look at Episode 1 & 2.
Studios just need to release all their movies, and treat them with the respect that they deserve. Then, there won't be a need for Criterion (for domestic releases)

No offense, but BOLLOCKS! Lucasfilm is retinkering their "product" every 5 minutes...my recommendation for Star Wars be done Criterion style is as it was released 1977, warts and all...maybe a couple of retrospective docs and so forth. Remember when it was called just straight up "STAR WARS"?

* Apocalypse Now

How's this?

Criterion would kill to have Star Wars...fans want the original theatrical releases...Lucas doesn't want to release the original theatrical releases...why not have CRITERION release the originals? Lucas could inflict, er, release his complete "vision" of the trilogy and Criterion could offer the trilogy as a nice boxed set.
I don't think Lucas would turn down this offer, actually. The man has to know the Criterion Collection exists and he has to be impressed with their standards; Jerm, don't criticize the quality of discs until you get a load of the source prints. Criterion can work miracles.

Some of the titles I'd like to see since it is more then likely they wouldn't get a 'mainstream' release (or SE).

- Bergman's The Virgin Spring
- Scorsese's The King of Comedy
- Jarmusch's Night on Earth
- W. Anderson's Bottle Rocket
- anything Woody Allen with some interesting supps. like say film historian commentaries
- Coens' Miller's Crossing and Barton Fink
- Fincher's The Game
- Welle's The Magnificent Ambersons
- Branagh's Hamlet (would actually shit pants if this happened)
- Vinterberg's Festen (The Celebration)
- Von Tier's The Idiots or Europa
- Parker's Orgazmo
- Hughes' 16 Candles or The Breakfast Club

Theta: Lucas is cetainly aware of Criterion. He does an intro for the Hidden Fortress disk.
PDJennings: I'm pretty sure that Criterion did make a laserdisk of Evita. Maybe your wish can come true!

As far as my wishlist, here are some of my most wanted. Some should be happening next year, but many are probably pipe dreams.
ANYTHING by Mizoguchi (but especially updated versions of the LDs)
La Strada and la Dolce Vita
El Topo and Holy Mountain
Lost Highway
An Andalusian Dog/Age of Gold or any more Bunuel
A NIN or Marilyn Manson video collection
More Bergman
some spruced up Kubrick disks

I guess that does it.

Top of wish list:

Boyz N The Hood
Trainspotting
Shawshank
The Game
The Insider

I'd also like to see:

Bottle Rocket
The Big Lebowski

Some of these have already been done on LD...can't we see them released on DVD?

As for Star Wars: George Lucas is a complete jackass for not giving us the orig version on DVD.
