Your Slate For September-December 2002

Tisk tisk. I can't think of anything better to post at the moment, and this topic is semi-interesting, so here we go.

We all know that this coming fall and holiday season will be the biggest yet for the DVD format (and most expensive for many of its loyal followers such as the visitors to this board), with so many must-have titles debuting on disc. But exactly what is your slate for the rest of the year? What new release titles do you want to own this fall?

My slate is listed here. What about you?

Note: The list linked above may be going through certian changes as I remember certian discs I forgot to include, so be paitent with me. Thanks!

Definitely getting when it comes out:

Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring (Platinum Series Extended Editon)

Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones

Spider-Man

And if I still have some money, after I am evicted for not paying on the house, I would like to get:

Minority Report

The Dangerous Lives of the Altar Boys

About a Boy

My Father's Glory

My Mother's Castle

Back to the Future

I'm sure there are more but that is it so far. Of course I have others from my list that were release before September, but we are not talkin' about that right now.

:p

I don't know how I will come up with the money for all of this, but here goes (in no particular order):

Monsters, Inc.
Beauty and the Beast
Band of Brothers
Spiderman
Episode II: Attack of the Clones
LOTR - Extended Edition (if I could only buy one, this would be it)
Back to the Future trilogy
E.T.

If they come out this year, I will also want: Minority Report and Road to Perdition.

Some DVDs I want that have already been released but haven't had the time (or money) to pick up yet...

Pulp Fiction CE
Jackie Brown
Reservoir Dogs
Sopranos Season 3
Star Trek II Director's cut

I need to come up with some sort of scam involving Columbia House and some friends

Here is my bankruptcy-inducing list for the rest of the year:

• Spiderman
• Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones
• LOTR: FOTR - Extended Edition
• Back to the Future Trilogy
• Panic Room

I haven't heard anything about Minority Report or Perdition DVDs, but those too if they come out.

Hmmm...

Well, here goes:

Solaris (I want to see the original before the remake, time to preorder!)
Star Trek III
Man Bites Dog (two Criterions...no money for Daniel-Daniel...)
Eight-Legged Freaks
The Powerpuff Girls (if widescreen)

I'm also grabbing "The Fog" and the dreaded "Total Movie" disc box is hitting my home sometime this September; somebody signed me up for it as a present.

I mentioned both of those at the link in my post but it doesn't matter if a title is repeated. I asked about your complete fall slates, so post what you wish. However, there's no harm in making it complete even if it means repeating a title (which I expected would happen when I started this thread anyway.)

I think I am the only person not excited about this fall. Let's take a look.

Attack of the Clones -- I would be excited about this, I would love to buy it -- but Lucas keep saying Star Wars Classic will never be released. I want the original trilogy and I feel like buying any of these current flicks will lock me into whatever eventually comes out for "completion" sake. Therefore I am passing on this just like I passed on Ep 1.

Spider-Man -- I am really disappointed in the extras. I was hoping for a video diary like A.I., Magnolia, or apparently the Star Wars films. Instead they slap on the HBO special. With two more movies on the way, I will wait this out and hope for a better DVD.

ET -- Where do I start? Everything about the release of this film makes me angry. ET was one of the "must own movies" on my list when I bought a DVD player. I will buy it but Universal has taken all joy out of getting this on DVD.

Back to the Future -- Well, I really think Universal is trying to screw people like me. I want the original cut of ET, and only the first BttF movie. While I will buy ET, I will pass on BttF unless I find it for $20 or less. Worse part is I gave away my video (one of 4 VHS titles I owned) in anticipation of the DVD.

Amadeus SE -- So far no indication the original cut will be included so it probably will not be. Undoubtly this will have a better transfer than the original disk. I'll wait for the reviews, but while I would like an SE of Amadeus Theatrical, I will probably not buy this... or the first disk.

So the only movies I am going to get besides ET are the Disney flicks:
Monsters Inc
Beauty and the Beast
Walt Disney Treasures -- Mickey & Goofy

Since Snow White and the first two animated Treasures completely burned me out on animation I feel I am forced to buy these during a limited time, not when I want to actually watch them.

So Minority Report, if it it comes out this year, will be the only DVD I am truly excited about.

I'm not excited about many of the big releases this fall. I'll probably pick up Spiderman, Minority Report, Panic Room and Insomnia. I'm going to stick with the 2 disk LOTR for now because I'm satisfied with it. Luckily for me there are a ton of smaller releases that I'm really excited about:
Koyaanisqatsi
Powaqqatsi
Man Bites Dog
Under the Roofs of Paris
Kino German Horror restorations
Passonlini's Decameron
Y Tu Mama Tambien
Solaris
Contempt
Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
Germany Year One
David Bowie 2 disk set
I know that there are more, but I can't come up with them right now.

Definite Purchases:

Monsters, Inc.
Houseguest
Beauty and the Beast PE
E.T. Ultimate Gift Set (already pre-ordered, Mediaplay misprice)
LOTR Gift Set (pre-ordered)

Would Like to Get for Christmas:

Back to the Future Trilogy
Simpsons Season 2
Star Wars: Episode II

Other Releases That I Might Buy:
Muppet Christmas Carol (Pan & Scan, but sounds better than my crappy Disney Channel taping)
Glengarry Glen Ross (haven't seen it, but heard good things)
Serpico (same as GGR)
Major League (would have been a definite buy, but no extras and a $24.99 SRP? I can wait for a price drop or Columbia House)
Amadeus Director's Cut SE (kinda upset the theatrical cut isn't on it, but I'll probably wait and get it from CH)

And I plan on doing a Columbia House account in October, for already-released DVDs of course:
Memento LE
Jerry Maguire SE
The Royal Tenenbaums CC
Speed 5-Star
Not sure on the last two spots, maybe Aliens SE and Glory SE.

Now that much of my resources are now allocated to university fees, I'm cutting down on DVDs, but there are still too many upcoming releases that I desire (Sigh). I'll probably bypass the blockbusters and concentrate on the smaller films like About a Boy, Y Tu Mama Tambien and The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys. My girlfriend also has got good taste (and makes some good coin ), so I'm sure she'll pick up titles I haven't purchased (it's a win-win!).

Thankfully my birthday is in mid-November, so I usually receive a lot of DVD loot six weeks before Christmas--my girlfriend knows I want the original E.T. theatrical cut on DVD (hey, I'm not going to pay the $60 for it), Solaris and the rest of the ST:TNG sets (if only Twin Peaks Season Two was definitely coming out by Christmas...).
