Giallo Collection...any good?
Saw this yellow in color box set at Best Buy for $39.95. It's released by Anchor Bay and contains 4 movies:
1) Blood Stained Shadow 2) Case of the Bloody Iris 3) Short Night of Glass Dolls 4) Who Saw Her Die? Are they any good, anamorphic, 5.1, uncut, worth the blind purchase...what? Thanks!!! |

I got the box two days ago. A friend forced me to order it blind (I like the genre but don't know any of these titles). When I'm through watching all, I'll post what I think...
Here are some "pro" reviews of the box: dvdauthority , dvdtalk , dvddrive-in

I picked it up over the summer, but I guess I missed seeing this thread. I enjoyed the set. I don't think any of the films live up to stuff like Argento, but if you are a fan of the genre, you should be pleased. As far as the disk quality, I thought they looked nice. They are on par with some of Anchor Bay's other 70s restoration. All of the films were pretty clever. It's been about 6 months since I watched them, so I can't remember too many specific details. Contrary to one of the reviews I read online, I liked Short Night of Glass Dolls. I really enjoyed the stucture of it and the end was genuinely creepy for me. I've been meaning to pop one or two of these in again and revisit them. I'll try to remember to look up the thread after I re-watch them.

heh, I'm glad this thread came up. I got these when they came out, and I totally forgot about them, I haven't watched them yet!
I'm a fan of Argento and some other Giallo films, but I was not familure with any of these titles, I just got it blind.

Thanks for your responses. I just watched NY Ripper & I can feel myself getting hooked on Giallos again. BB marked this set up $8 more than the original sticker so I'll order it online.
There's something cool about the whole tone of these movies that is addictive. It's the combination of the era (music & fashion), gore, psychos, sex, dubbing, color, & wacky logic, (plus there are gay characters in many of them)....that creates a freaky, scary, fascinating world. Nowadays I don't think movies like these would even get made.

Newt:
If you like the tone of the other Giallos that you've seen, then you'll be in for a treat. They are all full of hillariously dubbed characters, silly fashions, gratuitous nudity, violent deaths, and bizzare European locations. I don't remember the others, but Case of the Bloody Iris has a flamboyant gay photographer/fashion designer. I don't think these would be made today either. I think that's why they appeal to me. When I'm in the mood for something sleazy, I turn to Italian horror more often than anything else because of everything you mentioned. Nothing new really seems to blend all of the Giallo traits into such an appealing package. Oh, if it matters to you, these disks aren't in 5.1 but they are anamorphic.
