Video Quality Opinions...

What DVD's are considered by the "philes" to have bad video quailty, but to you the quality seems good enough (if not perfectly okay)?
On the flip-side, are there any DVD's you bought thinking they'd be good video quality but were ultimately disappointing?

Episode 1 gets trashed a lot for it's EE but I still think that it's a good one to show off with. Harry Potter's not as bad as everyone would have you think IMHO.

Resvoir Dogs, the new one. I like it and gave away my other one.

I too think Episode 1 is pretty good. I guess I'm paying too much attention to the movie to see all the EE.

Although I have not a lot of problems with Episode I (The EE's still noticable in my TV), I absolutely hate the Harry Potter transfer.

But other than that, i can't think of any.

The Carlito's Way transfer got a 4.5 star Widescreen review rating and it just sucks ass!

i was most disappointed by the "flash gordon" transfer. looked like a crappy 300kbps video stream. plus the audio was screwed up.

"excalibur" was disappoining too, despite beautiful colors in the transfer. the biggest problems (not mentioned in dvdfile's review) are:
1) in anamorphic the matting is too narrow. i.e., the aspect ratio is wrong, and tops of heads are cut off! watch the credits in anamorphic and you will notice some names at the top of the screen are only 1/2 visible.
2) there is a great deal of shimmer, especially in the scene where young arthur pulls the sword from the stone. the bright sky and tree limbs vibrate.
4) the audio was remixed to stereo, but collapses to mono for the final scene with wagner's "gotterdammerung" music. perhaps this was on purpose.
3) as noted by dvdfile there is a lot of pixilation and breakup in smokey scenes.

the new "the shining" release: in the scene where grady talks to jack in the red bathroom, there is a lot of vibrating. i tried to get others to verify this but everyone here who promised to look at their disc flaked out on me (thanks, guys ). it is especially sad because this new "the shining" disc is otherwise a nearly perfect transfer.

the new "barry lyndon" release: there is a lot of noticeable telecine misalignment, a slight rocking back and forth of the picture. again, a real shame considering how amazing this transfer is otherwise.

my wife bought "royal wedding" on the alpha video dvd. i have never seen a dvd that looked so bad. it looked like it was taken from a vhs copy recorded off broadcast television, and the print, well let's just say the film broke on the mgm lion's roar and was patched back together with a bandaid. i simply refuse to watch it.

Where exactly, and do you see swimming or bleeding of color?

there is no swimming or bleeding of color. if you read my post again, this is what i said:
"the new "the shining" release: in the scene where grady talks to jack in the red bathroom, there is a lot of vibrating."
watch the edge of the screen in relation to the mirror edges, and you will see what i am talking about. the picture jerks back and forth slightly and rapidly. my guess is that since red takes up more data than other colors somehow the dvd authors didn't compensate for the extra bits needed to reproduce that scene on dvd.

fyi, my dvdp is a panasonic rv80, and my tv is a sony wega. connections are via component. everything has been calibrated through the service menu and a video essentials disc, including corrections for overscan, 16:9 oversqueeze, red push, and geometry.

Yes, now I see what you mean. The picture as a whole is vibrating, you're right. But it's only in the shot I captured on the right, all other angles in that scene are "stable"...

Ok, lets see:
I agree with videophiles on the following transfers:
Wings of Honneamise (terrible,terrible,terrible)
Moulin Rouge
Any of the Superbit titles
Well, ok, ok like 95% of my DVD collection.

I disagree:
The Phantom Menace, i tested this one on my friends 57 inch Widescreen HDTV that has the sharpness all the way up and barely saw any E.E. only by zooming in it was incredibly noticeable.

Reservoir Dogs: I just had to lower the brightness setting to really enjoy it, not much of a problem at all.

And many more out there.

I own this DVD and a Toshiba 57HX81 57" HDTV and I saw ALL of the EE described here:

http://home.t-online.de/home/bjoern....TPM/TPM_01.htm

I was able to see this WITHOUT doing ANY zooming at all and I've calibrated the video settings with Video Essentials. I sit ~12' away from the TV and was able to see halos throughout the entire movie.

You should consider yourself to be very fortunate if you did not see any halos...

Peace......
