No More Snappers!!!

From DVDFile Main page

Quote:
What a perfect way to wrap up this week's news! With few fans, the dreaded "snapper" case has long been the subject of controversy and scorn, and even a few anti-snapper online petitions. While some like this type of DVD packaging - with it's cardboard covers and plastic "snap" backing - few, if any, prefer it over the durable "keepcase," which has now become the de facto industry standard. With only Warner and its subsidiaries New Line and HBO still using the packaging, many enthusiasts have called for an end to the snapper and standardized, industry-wide adoption of the keepcase.

I don't understand the quote and why it is good? We all know that Amary type keepcases are becoming the standard, but it mentions the obvious

How is this quote meaning the end. All it means is people like us are always complaining and trying to get rid of the snapper

Now, New Line has broken away with its parent company, announcing that by the end of 2002, it will cease using the snapper on all its releases, opting instead for the keepcase and combinations of other packaging (such as the Digipak) for multi-disc and other special releases.

Well, that's good news for all you snapper case haters out there.

Now ask yourselves this question, are you gonna replace all those titles that originally came in snappers? Probably not. Some might be out of print anyway.

New Line is finally getting smart. I say to hell with those damn snappers and I suggest Warner Bros. and HBO get their shit in order too.

Give me keepcases or give me death!

That's just crazy. Now if the disk came out as new Special Edition with features never before seen...maybe. But I won't go out and waste money that I already have.

Just because New Line is switching to keep cases is no guarantee that they'll reissue all (or any) of their previous snapper-only titles in them. As for replacing my snapper cases, too expensive at this point.

I only got four snap-case movies. Unless Superman: The Movie is re-released in a keep case as a 2-disc set, or Warner Bros. comes out with a new super deluxe ultimate special edition of the movie, I won't be replacing any of my snapper movies.

I cannot understand why someone would feel the need to re-purchase a DVD that they already have just because it has new packaging. It's the same disc. Is a 20 cent case worth spending $20 to get something you already have? I'd rather spend my funds on something I don't already have.

I prefer keep cases like most people, but I don't mind snap cases at all. I think they all look great on my shelves.

Hmm.. I wonder if Austin Powers 3 will be a keep case.

That would just look odd, baby!

Like some others in this thread, I'm wondering if they'll will reissue their snapper titles in keep cases. The only New Line title I have on DVD is The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, which came in a keepcase anyway. I'd like to pick up Austin Powers and Plesantville, but if New Line has any even remote plans to put them in keepcases, I'll wait. Anyone know of anything?

It still amazes me that someone would actually postpone purchasing a movie they want just because it comes in a different case. Even if they did release PLEASANTVILLE in a keep case, you're still going to get the same disc. Why, oh why, is the snap case so dreaded by so many? It's just a case. It holds a disc. No big deal. I've got about 45 snap cases and have never had a single problem with any of them. In fact, they're kinda fun to play with because you can take them apart. And I like to take things apart.

Here's to snap cases. HERE, HERE!!

Snapper cases never really bothered me either.

In fact, if there is one virtue to snappers, it's that I've never had a disc skating loose inside of a snapper (I think it's actually more snug and secure) And I have quite a few snapper-cases, with a lot of them being Warner budget titles.

I'd prefer no snappers but they don't bug me enough to care about it much.

The snapper itself doesn't bother; it's just that it's impossible to replace the case if it ever gets damaged. I just bought Seven Days in May today and when I took off the security sticker on top a bunch of the cardboard came with it. That's what pisses me off about snappers.

True, they're probably better for the environment but Warner could always use packaging similar to Grease if they want to be environmentally friendly.

i don't mind snappers, but i do mind those new clear cases, like the one "legend: ultimate edition" came in. you can not replace them if they break, and they tend to come apart at the seam. they also crack on the inside like cd jewel boxes.

i am also not a fan of dvd sets that come in carboard sleeves like "amelie". i buy a lot used and almost always the cardboard is shredded.

I have a number of snappers where the hub got broken during a move; irreversible damage and I can never think of my Nightmare on Elm Street boxset the same way again, knowing it's imperfect!

I bought Miss Congeniality and when I shook the case, I can tell there's a loose disc inside; I returned it and bought another one!

This is a pleasant surprise..though The Lord Of The Rings seemed to mark a new beginning.

I'm no fan of the Snapper cases or the all-too-delicate cardboard/plastic digipack packaging. I do prefer the classic amaray cases.

The biggest problem with the snappers or digipacks is that they are more prone to breaking and/or being crushed and are pretty much irreplaceble.

I imagine eventually New Line's catalogue will be available in keepcases...eventually

hopefully Warner Bros. will soon follow suit

I agree, it's just absurd. I'm in this DVD scene for the film, because I love film, and I'm pursuing a career in the field. The type of case the film comes in should be the least of anyone's concerns. Of course, a nice case is always welcome, but snappers aren't "bad" cases, enjoy the film, get past the package barrier.

Well, Plesantvile and Austin Powers are good, but nothing I need to have immidately, especially with the upcoming onslaught of must-have DVD releases this fall. I wasn't planning on getting them now anyway, so when this news came along it gave me a greater incentive to hold out.

Sure, if I want a film that comes in a snapper I'll get it, but if there's even the slightest chance that it will be coming out with better packaging, I'll wait a while as long as it's not something I have to own ASAP. And these two aren't.
