The Others, too low sound and sometimes to high.

I got this one as a retarded birthday gift (my brother Hugo is far away now and very busy). As I always do with volume i put it from MAX and if it hurts my ears i lower it one notch then another one and so on and so forth.
I had to lower The Others from 31 to 13.
But damn, everything was so quiet i just couldnt stop moving the volume knob through all the film!; Why did Dimension not include a DTS track?, hey at least it would have helped!.

As for the movie, image quality and extras:

I also find that annoying when a sound track isn't mixed too well. Tracks where you have to crank it up in order for the dialogue to be audible, but then any other sound made is insanely loud. (Have that problem with the X-Men DVD.) Normally I'd just crank up the center channel, but that doesn't always work. Also, I hate having to change my speaker settings just for one movie. I'm just hoping that there is a software solution for this "problem." (I use my computer with it's great 5.1 speakers and large monitor as my "home theater." The only downside is that the fans in my case are kind of loud.)

I think that a perfect way to balance things is to make quiet scenes very audible and loud scenes loud.
I just found annoying that the screams were ear piercing and the quiet scenes were too quiet.

I, too, found it frustrating to lower the volume when the characters are screaming and heighten the volume when they are talking that almost sounds like whispering; why did Nicole had to whisper in most of her scenes in this movie?

I found the mix to be almost perfect.
I didn't have to change the volume setting throughout the movie at all.

Don't mean to offend anyone, but perhaps your Center speaker isn't good enough for this dvd?

Even though I usually detest "BOO! scared ya!" type of horror/suspense movies like The Others, I found the movie remarkably well done. Thanks in part to the soundtrack. I also have a "Night Theater" mode on my reciever that equalizes volume on movies just like The Others. But it only works for Dolby Digital.

I don't buy this for a minute. I would hope that a setup consisting of this setup wouldn't have problems handling anything. The fact that this is the only DVD that I and many others are having a problem with suggests otherwise, unless everyone just has a really crappy setup.

And that's not likely.

I'm not saying anyone's setup is crappy.
Sometimes a disc can shine (or even be adequate) only on higher-end systems.

And although the Monitor Series is good, it's hardly hi-end.

Let me give you an example from the video realm:
13th Warrior.
Now, a lot of people complained that this film is too dark and murky and you simply can't distinguish anything from the shadows.
I can tell you, that on a CRT FP it looks absolutely magnificent.
Black level and shadow detail is superb.
(the script, however, is a totally different story... )
Now, you can tell that on your 50" tv set or your plasma screen it looks bad.
That does not mean you have a bad display (far from it), but this does also not mean that the transfer is bad, cause it's not.
Your TV would simply not be good enough for this dvd.

All I can say is, the dialog throughout The Others was crystal clear, yet the loud parts weren't too loud.

Again, this is not meant to offend anyone, or to insinuate that one's setup is bad.

Mine is properly calibrated, by SPL meter and Avia.

There is a difference between two scenarios with dialogue:

1)Saving Private RyanTS- Omaha beach scenes, you can make out the dialogue 1-2 seconds after it has been said, as a result of the loud noises

2)Cast Away when he's about to use the ice skates you can barely hear him, yet the only outside affect is the fire burning.

So there is a difference between Environmental enforced audio, and poorly mixed segments of audio.
