Would you like a "Saving Private Ryan" SE DVD?

Or are you happy with the one you have now? I love that film & I'd love a "making of...", deleted scenes, etc. I know Spielberg regards the subject & film with respect & doesn't want to reduce it to mass market merchandising crap that other films *coughpearlharborcough* treat their subjects with, but I can't help but think there's so much that DVD could show us about great filmmaking & a truly great filmmaker.

Ryan? Just to see that (then) new anti-steady-cam-device they deflowered there alone...

I've held off so far, though with the BOB set coming out and SPR on TV again the other night, I am sorely tempted.

Anyone really know if this is it with the current DVD?

I bought a copy and suggest that you do too. I don't think there will be another version of this DVD for quite awhile (if ever).

Think about it. Many of Spielberg's other movies haven't even been released yet on DVD. Why would he come out with a special edition of this until the others were out? I highly doubt you'll see a special edition of SPR on this format.

Personally I am more than satisfied with the current DTS DVD.

What is the BOB set you are referring to?

Schindler's List, Sugarland Express, and E.T. and Duel which are coming out soon enough... what else is there that hasn't been released? I think he's been pretty well-represented on DVD.

i reckon we'll see a re-release some day - but probably not in the near future (ie - at least next two or three years). it'll probably have more bonus material, but i guess it's just a big waiting game.

Well, you've got the three Indiana Jones films and Empire of the Sun. That's a lot right there. Plus I've never heard anything about Schindler's List, but I hope you're right. Anyway, my point was that I think we'll see much more of these others before you see SPR get a re-release. I could be wrong, but I doubt you'll see an SPR re-release before the IJ movies come out and nobody knows when that will happen.

I'd say buy it.

I don't know why you peopel hold off on buying a DVD just anticipating a future DVD release that might not ever happen, especially when a current DVD is out.

Now, I can see if the current title is non-anamorphic, or the transfer is total crap, or in mono, or whatever. But a great DVD like Saving Private Ryan? Give me a break. You can always sell, give away or trade in your old version if a new version comes out down the road. Why deny yourself a movie you like when you can have and enjoy it without waiting?

I can understand in a case like Resident Evil.. They annouce a standard with an SE in a few months. THen I can see holding off. But on something like Saving Private Ryan? Come on, live a little drop the 20 bucks.

I'm in the "buy it now" camp as well, especially if you get the DTS version. There's no need for extras when your movie sounds that good.

In Regards to the subject question.
No- I think this is an over rated film and if it wasn't for the reference quality DTS soundtrack,I would not have it in my collection.I regard The Thin Red Line (which came out at the same time) to be a far superior film.Just my opinion.
Would it really be worthwhile re-releasing it?Fine Audio and Video, only extras would improve it,and i cannot see the point.
cheers

He is well represented, but I won't be happy until Indy is out on DVD.

I'd like to see (someday) a two-disk SE of SPR, if only to get both the "Into the Breech" doc and DTS sound.

BoB: I imagine it's the Band of Brothers set that's coming out.

I was hoping it meant the 1969 Battle of Britain.

I'm in the "buy it now" camp as well. I've watched the dts SPR several times now, and would have hated to miss those viewings for the hypothetical version that may never come out.

If a SE later does come out of one of my faves, and I have to have it, I'll get it then and then trade the old one or give it to someone less fortunate.

If they came out with a new version, it would probably have DD as well as the only needed DTS on it. Waste of video space if you ask me. The DTS track is reason to buy DTS equipment. The DD is a waste of space. I personally think a special edition would ruin this film. I often think too much about what I saw during a featurette instead of the message in the film. Also, what would special features teach you about this movie?
