The problem with sequels in general is that they usually pale in comparison to the first, or the sequel that precedes it.
Return of the Jedi is great, mostly Back to the Future 3 was OK...not great, but watchable. Star Trek 3, ditto Also ditto for Lethal Weapon 3. It didn't suck, but I understand why it wasn't up for any awards. I thought Friday the 13th Part 3 was better than Part 2. Army of Darkness aka Evil Dead 3, is pure bliss. Nightmare on Elm Street 3, with Wes Craven being involved, kicked Part 2's butt

Loved "Jurassic Park 3". Flame me if you must, but I was totally entertained, and found the writing quite clever.
I'd also mention "Alien 3", but I know I'm in the vast minority on that one and I don't need any more beatings. ![]() "Die Hard With a Vengeance" is also noteable as being better than 2, IMHO. Still not nearly as good as 1, but somewhat worthy. And I'll second Manigrasso's vote for "Army of Darkness". It may be the best of the series.

Die Hard: With a Vengeance is great.
Goldfinger (It is the third in the official series, so I can name it) Army of Darkness (Like mani said, pure bliss)

I'd have to say that Rocky III is pretty good as far as that series goes...after that it reeeaaaly went downhill. It was kind of a believable premise which seems to take place in the boxing world all of the time. Guy becomes champ, gets complacent, gets beat by an up and coming contender, then trains hard and wins his title back in a rematch.
I'd also have to say that I liked what they tried to do withHalloween III:Season of the Witch. They abandoned the Michael Myers storyline for a real creepy story about a sinister plot to kill kids with their Halloween masks. It reminded me of one of those stories that you'd read in Creepy magazine or one of those early horror comic books. Fincher's Alien III was a good installment in the series, and launched a damn good career. Alot of people liked Back to the Future III better than than BTTF II, but I didn't really care for either one of them. Hmmmm. That's about it for now. ![]() |

I really liked Jurassic Park 3, as well. None of that evil corporation bullshit from the second one, just dinosaurs eating people. That's what I wanted to see in JP and The Lost World.
I also really liked Alien 3. It had it's moments plus it's a David Fincher film (well, sorta) so it couldn't be that bad. RotJ was good, aside from those Ewoks. I liked them as a kid ,but as I grew up I came to despise them. I've got a gut feeling that Terminator 3 is going to be pretty bad, though. This movie is being made purely for the $$$. Yet another franchise that should have been left alone.

Not available on DVD yet, but I thought Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was the best of the Indy movies, especially with Sean Connery perfectly cast as Indy Sr.

I just thought of another film that had a pretty good 3rd installment. It's not one that comes to mind immediately, but the 3rd film of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan series, Clear and Present Danger, was pretty good. It was the better of the two films where Harrison Ford was the lead character.
My favorite of these films, though, is still the first one, The Hunt For Red October, which had Alec Baldwin in the lead role (and Sean Connery as the Russian sub commander and a pretty good cast for the other characters in the movie).

It seems like (contrary to School House Rock) that 3 is not a magic number.
So many sequels seem to fall flat on # 3. Superman, Batman (although I used to really like this one, but watching it recently, it was just too Schumaker-ry) and many others.

Return of the Jedi springs immidately to mind, that was exellent as are all of the others (although it's technically Part 6.) People seem to regard this one as the weak point in the original trilogy, though I have no idea why. It's a really great movie.
Back to the Future III is great too, and while it's not my favoite of the trilogy (that title has to go to the original), it's very fun, very funny, and more. No BTTF collection would be entirely complete without it. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is great too, personally my favorite of the Indys. Aladdin and the King of Thives was good, and while it's nowhere near the original's level, it is one of the better ones from Disney's cheapquel departments. Air Bud: World Pup was good enough, too. The Lord of the Rings III will surely be exellent, and I have high hopes for Spider-Man 3, Spy Kids 3, Star Wars III, and Harry Potter 3. Hopefully they'll go against the usual 3 formula and concur with Schoolhouse Rock! that three IS a magic number. Also, hopefully the currently rumored Men in Black III will be good. II was okay, nothing special, but maybe III can renew the greatness in the franchize.

Smokey and the Bandit 3? The only good scene in that whole movie was when Burt came back for a glorified cameo at the end.. and the conversation he had with Jackie Gleason, about how he should let him go because they don't want the chase to end.
Jaws 3? "Jesus H Christ....." what happened.. this stank.. and this is coming from one of the biggest Jaws fans on the planet!I will still buy it on DVD..whenever that is.. Star Trek III? A very sad movie. Too many tears. Death of Kirk's son.. death of the Enterprise.. and Chekov's pink uniform!?! Rambo III? It certainly had more action then the previous ones.. but First Blood is a classic. Superman III? All that comes to mind is during all the panic in Metropolis, the WALK/DON'T WALK red & green guys fight. THEY FIGHT!!!?? Who's idea was this! But the bright spot of the film was Evil Supes vs Good Clark. Classic superhero stuff. Ummmm... Wrestlemania III? Hulk vs Andre! ![]() Thomas J |

Noones mentioned Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3! Haha, not the best, but it was good.
Gotta also love the Army of Darkness, Return of the Jedi, BTTF3, Godfather Part 3, and Indy and the Last Crusade. All great part threes. |

Mad Max 3
I think Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome is a great movie.
I like it better than part 1 and almost as much, though in a different way from The Road Warrior. It's the perfect end to a great series! ![]()

They're going to ruin that with a Mad Max 4 you know...
Anyway, I have to agree on Indiana Jones 3 and Army of Darkness being excellent, Back to the Future 3 and Die Hard 3 being pretty good, and Return of the Jedi and Godfather 3 being OK. And I hope the Jaws 3 DVD comes with 3D Glasses! |
