Name good films with short running times (<95 mins)

In a world where the long cut is king, and gaining ever-increasing acceptance (extended versions of LOTR, Amadeus, Abyss etc), I'm interested to hear about your favorite films with shorter running times (I'm not talking about short films, but short features).

Don't get me wrong, I do love long films if they're good , it's just that I often find I don't have time to sit still/stay awake for even 2 hours, and so I choose which of my dvds to watch based on running time. And many films with running times of less than 90 minutes seem to be synonymous with "crap".

So, what are your best, short (<95 mins but you can argue it if a film feels shorter) features.

Animated fair is of course a given.

To start us off (unfortunately DVDProfiler doesn't let us generate a graph by running time, so I used a report instead):

Cube - 90 mins
Rushmore - 93 mins
.. can't wait for Scooby Doo at 86 mins (yes, ok, call it blinded by love)

Shorter running times were very common in the early 20th century...possibly since when you saw a movie then you also got short subjects, newsreels, etc., not just fifteen minutes of trailers and commercials for Pepsi like you do now.

Some of the Universal classic horror films come to mind...James Whale brought in Bride of Frankenstein at something like 75 minutes, and it was better than the original (which itself had a running time in that neighborhood).

I'm sure I'll think of more...

It's not on DVD yet (and, as of this writing, not even in the theatres yet), but "Punch-Drunk Love" is 89 minutes, and it's wonderful.

"The Road Warrior" is 95 minutes exactly.

"Monty Python and the Holy Grail" is 89 minutes.

Following is an interesting feature-length film which fills just 69 minutes. From Christopher Nolan, the director of Memento and Insomnia, for those not aware.

Most of Woody Allen's films, especially the "earlier, funnier ones" are about/under 90 minutes.

Airplane
Top Secret.
Most, if not all, of John Waters' movies (he's actually said in print he doesn't believe a comedy should be more than 90 minutes if it can be at all helped.
The Hours & Times by Christopher Nolan. I think it's just over an hour. It was a critical darling, though I tjhink it's assy.

If you go through an entire database of movies, I wouldn't be surprised if half of all the titles ever made are around 90 minutes, give or take 5-10.

That may be true, but the current trend appears to be for bad movies to be simply cut to pieces (ironically making them even worse as they usually cut out all-important exposition) to make them short enough for audiences to bear ("it was a bad film, but at least it was short").

I'll be keeping this list of short but *good* films for future rental reference .... so thanks for all the suggestions (and keep em coming!)

And now I'm going to HAVE to buy THE EYE!

Actually there's another strategy at work beyond "It sucked but it was short." To be blunt, it's known as "hit and run."

When it comes to the quality of a movie, as art or entertainment, the studios couldn't give a rat's ass about a movie's total running time. You paids your money, you tooks your chances. No guarantees a movie has to be good. BUT if they can keep a BAD movie's running time down to an obscene minimum, they can squeeze extra showings out of a movie. The theory being, if you have one extra opportunity to see movie A over Movie B, and they're both in their opening weekends, you might go to see Movie A because it fits in with your schedule better, don't have to rush, can enjoy your dinner beforehand etc etc. That means the Studio makes a little more money before the public-at-large hears just how horrible the movie is. They got you before you knew any better.

It might interest peopole to know that for a short time, one of Columbia Pictures' most widely-released movies in an opening weekend was the quite unspactacular comedy Neighbors, starring John Belushi & Dan Aykroyd. Now I love John Belushi, but this movie is a pure unadulterated dog turd. Test screenings never gave it a higher rating than 3% "excellent or good." Columbia knew they had a stinker. So they cut it down and released it in around 700 theatres MORE than they originally planned, knowing Belushi/Aykroyd fans would flock to it before getting a chance to tell all their friends how much it sucked. They blitzkrieged it in TV radio & print ads; everybody knew it was coming out. And the movie fizzled out of theatres in about 6 weeks, but it either broke even, or came close. Close enough that you have to figure it made a profit once it got into ancillary venues (cable, broadcast & video).

Hit and run. That's what it is. They're not doing YOU a favor by making a movie short. If they were doing YOU a favor, they'd make it GOOD, and damn the cost. It's all about that one extra showing a day opening weekend, in a desparate attempt to minimize the damage to the studio's wallet.

In addition to those mentioned (Pixar's four films, most Disney animated features including the just-64-minute-Dumbo), I can think of:

Planes, Trains & Automobiles
Old Yeller
Cheetah
Paths of Glory

Men in Black is great, and I think it's 95 minutes on the dot. MIIB is good too with a running time of 88 minutes.

99.9% of all animated features also qualify.
