FINALLY -- "End of Eva" on DVD!
Woo! Woo! Cake! Cake!
Finally, after YEARS of waiting, "End of Evangelion", the huge-scale, incredibly surrealistic conclusion to the series "Neon Genesis Evangelion" is released to DVD ^_^ For a while now, I've been watching this over and over (and over and over) on a bootleg VHS with poor quality It's an amazing film, and I recommend it, as well as the entire series, to anyone remotely interested in film. It's sad that "Eva" gets seen primarily by obsessive otaku, becuase I really think it's worthy of much more recognition than a bunch of fankids can give. ::sigh::, if only I had nay cash at all with which to purchase the disc ![]() Thanx, Brook Also-- forgive me if this has already been discussed -- I poked around and didn't find anything ![]()

While I personally love Eva, it's an extraordinary complex story, and the first few episodes are actually rather hard to watch, at least for me it took a while before I got "hooked" to the series. I don't know if I would agree with Soggy though that only "obsessive otaku" have seen this, as it is usually referenced as must see anime. It has a huge fan base that, I think, goes way beyond just otaku and should be required viewing for even the most casual anime fan.

I've seen this at my local store, but I've heard all sorts of bad juice about a second layer that doesn't play at all, and how Manga isn't known for acknowledging their faulty discs or replacing them. I think I'll hold out until there's at least some good news.

When exactly does the story in Eva get "good and interesting"? I rented the first 3 DVDs, which I think was the first 10 or 11 episodes, and I wasn't really impressed with it. I don't feel like gambling on buying the box set for $100+ if the other 15 episodes are similar.
The way I understand it, the 2 Eva movies are an alternate ending of the last 2 or 3 TV episodes, where the original ending apparently got strange and bewildering to fans, according to what I've heard. The movies are not condensed retellings of the TV series, which is what often happens with other anime movies. They seem to be an alternate universe version of "this is how the series really should have ended".

I think it's actually more like... the last two episodes are completely insane. The movies are a way of showing how it got from the third to last episode to the last two episodes. Soggy would probably know more, but I don't think that it's supposed to be an alternate reality.

Easy..
Death & Rebirth is a "condensed" version of the series, but it is not really any more understandable than the series itself. It makes me think of some sort of "refresher" to watch before watching the real movie, which is End of Evangelion. EoE is an "alternate" for the last two episodes of the series. As I understand it, the show was cut somewhat short, and there were problems making the last two episodes (no money, time, etc.), which is why some of the animation is unfinished. I have read to the contrary in some places, but just watching it seems to bear that out. As far as how "enjoyable" the series is, it is really not for everybody. I know just as many, if not more, anime fans that really despise NG:E. I love it. It is not typical anime, it is not an action story or anything like that. Don't get into it looking for any resolution to anything, because there really isn't.. Where do the angels come from, and exactly why are they attacking? Beats me.. But I still enjoy it.. ![]() |

Well, "End of Eva" is sort of a physical expression of what happens in the last two episodes of the series. In the last two episodes, we take a look inside the characters' minds as Shinji's father essentially destroys the world so that he can be re-united with his wife. "End of Eva" looks at physical expressions of what is happening. Granted this, you can't really understand the film unless you've seen the last 2 eps of "Evangelion".
As far as the series being boring... In a sense of just looking at what is actually happeing on screen and searching for sheer entertainment, yes, it is VERY boring. "Evangelion" is brain entertainment, what entertains you is thinking about what everything that happens means and having little analysis of all of the characters and what their motives are inside your head. That's one of the things that makes the series so special -- it's a totally different experience for everyone. Thanx, Brook

I'n my opinion, the last two episodes of Evangelion (25 and 26)should never have been made. It was all filler fluff nonsense. I understand that at the time, nothing could really be done about it due to time and money constraints. But come on, more of the "This is how you see them , this is how they see you" shit. Bah. Time to pick up my copy of End of Eva & Death and Rebirth this week just so I can finish my collection.
Still though, minus the last 2 episodes which I will chalk up as freebees, the eva perfect collection box set is still one of my best buys. And at a little over $100 bucks at BB its a steal. |

Unfortunately, I had already bought all the discs individually (one at a time, as released, starting right before the second was out; damn that was tough to wait for, since I'd only previously seen the episodes from the first two discs). However, I found a site that sold the boxes + remastered disc 1 (as included in the boxed set) + new cover for disc 2 (to make the titles line up when in the box). I've noticed on my box, and the ones I see in the store, that the DVDs don't go all the way into the box, and having assembled it, I saw that one of the folds looks like it's cut a little bit short, so that it creates a gap in the back. It made me wonder if ADV ever saw them before they were shipped off..

If I want "brain entertainment" in my anime, I'll just keep rewatching serial experiments lain. It has the mood and the message down pat, along with dreamlike visuals and an actual thought provoking story arc. And then for my healthy dose of big 'robots', good characters and smart storytelling, I'll just keep rewatching Escaflowne [the series]. And it IS true that Eva is not just heralded by drooling, otaku Eva fanboys. It's as mainstream as any anime series that hasn't aired on Cartoon Network or the Kid's WB can be. --Scourge . I've got the Lain boxed set (not the lunchbox, unfortunately
), after having borrowed the first DVD from a friend. I've only watched through the second disc, and I was lost.. I really liked what I saw, but I think I need to start over again, and maybe watch only an episode or two at a time, rather than trying to make my way through all of it at once. I dunno, it seemed to progress logically as a story, then all of a sudden became incomprehensible.. Maybe I'm just crazy.. ![]() |

If you want more out of 'lain' or find yourself lost, read this 2 page review. That is the most in depth review of maybe anything that I've ever seen. Intricate and intellectual. Amazing! And considering how obtuse the series can be, I wouldn't consider anything in the review to be a spoiler as it should only increase your curiosity to watch further.
