Who's seen Stephen King's THE GOLDEN YEARS

I saw this on DVD the other day at Best Buy and I got to remembering when I rented this a few years back on VHS. From what I remember the ending didn't make sense at all. The guy stayed young, nothing really happened or was resolved, the end. I remember at the time thinking, "damn, looks like they ran out of money and didn't bother filming the conclusion". I'll admit though I don't remember it too well except for that I didn't understand the ending at all, and it seemed "unfinished". If anyone has seen this can they explain the ending? I dunno maybe it went over my head or something.

Didn't they recut the ending in some way when it was released on video? I remember the miniseries basically ending with an unresolved cliffhanger.

Yeah, they put the ending back in in the DVD and VHS versions. I've got the dvd version (just for the sake of my Stephen King movie collection), but I'll be damned if I remember the ending.

I'm sorry, but I found "Golden Years" to be horribly boring and I don't think I'll be watching it again anytime soon.

But on the plus side, you do get to see Felicity Huffman in her bra and panties(briefly if I do say so myself).

i watched this show when it was first on and really liked it, i still have the whole thing recorded on VHS and have been meaning to watch it again, but with 24 out on DVD, Alias, Enterprise and Smallville back on who has time?. dont pick up the dvd though, several episodes have been cut down so the series runs much shorter (by over 2 hours i think)
i remember the ending being a cliffhanger where the bad guys and the crazy scientist finally get the old man ?young man? and the FBI agents go off to rescue him.

Did they mean to end it in a cliffhanger purposely? What reason? I don't get it.

I don't think they (CBS, I do believe) meant it to be a cliffhanger, but from what I've heard and read, ratings were dismal for this particular series (which was supposed to become a tv series).

I looked at the back of the case and according to that case, Golden Years runs 232 minutes. That's almost 4 hours. I don't think any "episodes" were cut, but due to the alotted time, remember, the presentation on dvd is without commercials. a different story when it debut on tv back in '91 I think.

Also, I forget where, but I remember seeing or reading that this *mini-series* if you will was 4 hours long or close to it. It's possible it may have run longer on tv becuase of commercials.

So, in conclusion, I think you get the whole show.

But why would they even bother releasing it on DVD if it wasn't finished?

The Laserdisc which contains the complete series has a running time of 360 min and i just wound through my old tape of the show and it runs for 8 hours with commercials... 480min X 0.75 (to subtract 15 minutes of commercials per hour) = 360 min.
the DVD has a 232 minutes cut of the series. so its shorter by over 2 hours
some of you have said that there is an ending on the DVD. how does the DVD end?

here is what is on my original TV recording:

in my vhs version, his wife dies, there are some flashbacks to them dancing and doing other stuff from throughout the series, he carries her out of the house they are holed up in, collapses, gets taken into custody, the crazy scientist goes to a grave, either buries or digs something up, the two agents walk through a pond with a car sunk in it and head off to rescue the old man. the assassin is standing over the old man who is tied to a hospital bed and his eyes flash green. to be continued. the end.
