i was looking through the circuit city by my house when i came across the criterion for The Rock. now i really dont know much about DVDs value wise and whats out of print, but i remember reading the criterions are worth more and go OOP or something. how much is this one worth? i saw it there for $35 and didnt pick it up.....im debating whether i should or not.

Well first off, have you ever seen the film? If not then you missed one of the best actions films of the 90's & possibly all-time. The criterion version is great.

I picked it up for around $30 and it is well worth it. The transfer is superb, the DTS : amazing, and some nice features to round it off.
its a great film. Get back there now, and buy it!

I found a used Robocop Criterion... 20 Canadian... no marks, no stickers... thats like... 50 cents for you guys... (ok... more like 13 bucks). This was after it was OOP too... as for The Rock... I found Amazon.com to be fairly cheap for it, I think it was 27 or so.

I've been putting off buying this one for a long, long time, just because of the $34.99 pricetag. This is a pretty slow week, maybe I'll finally bite the bullet.

The Rock: Criterion is an excellent dvd that deserves to be in every fan's collection. The transfer is the best I have ever seen. The dts is debatable.

The commentary is by far one of the best. They get really involved in the whole film making process such as getting the right actors, budget restrictions, final cut, plot choices, and so on. Great set!

well i didnt mean it like that cuz i know the tenebaums go for $20. i meant the rock criterion because it is like $35 at so many places.
though i see it going for as low as $21 used on half.com and $26 new on dvdplanet.....so looks like i will be returning.

I actually just received this in a trade today. Love the movie, now all I have to do is find a way to get rid of my barebones version.

I completely agree. It's funny because Michael Bay's comments are the most vapid on the track. Surprisingly, it's Nicolas Cage whose comments are the most worthwhile. I don't think anyone has really explained acting in an action film that well. Ed Harris is great also, and Jerry Bruckheimer--creator of schlock he may be-- is very well-spoken.

Ah, how naive. Criterion DVDs are arguably special. They pioneered the special edition back in the old laser disc days, and their DVDs are top-notch, though a little bit more pricy. Check out http://www.criterionco.com/ to see their catalogue.

Cage is great on the track, especially when he goes into Simpson's death and how he told Bay. Some deep stuff on there.

Bay's comments are the best though. Explaining the logical and the illogical and why he can do it because it's his movie. In all of his commentaries (except Pearl Harbor) he goes into deep discussion about the entire production, and that is why he is one of the best commentators there is.

Okay, here goes....

Horribly written, terrible attempts at "humor", editing that made Moulin Rouge! look like a Kubrick movie, made a joke out of the basic laws of physics (yeah, cable cars tend to explode and flip over five times in midair when sideswiped by any other vehicle), needlessly cruel violence, obnoxious videogame "score", annoying blue filters over the camera lens (a Michael Bay Miller Beer-commercial speciality), Transformed Nicolas Cage from a talented young indie actor into a neo-Schwarzenegger action-movie puppet, Made even Sean Connery uncool (how the hell do you do that?!?), and yet, given all of this wretched excess, has Vanessa Marcil wearing a bra during her gratuitous sex scene with Cage! Jesus, if Bay was going to make me sit through two hours of unending, R-rated torture, the least he could have done was show me Marcil's tits. The fact that Criterion has wasted two of their releases on Bay movies is appalling.

Good enough?
