To those who have the "Grease" DVD...

I'm hearing rumors that the audio for the songs is messed up or wasn't really re-mastered correctly, is this true?

I'm from UK and the soundtrack on the Grease dvd does indeed sound crap. It's not really because it's in dolby 5.1 more because parts have been rerecorded, remixed and just sounds really weak, nowhere near as good as the original stereo mix.I actually posted a message on the subject a few days ago but nobody replied so i assumed nobody was interested.I'de like to know if the 2.0 surround track on the region1 disc contains the original 1978 music.

I think it sounds okay, but I'm just a casual fan of the movie. My wife said that it does sound like crap, but she attributes it to the remix they did for the theatrical re-release a few years back because she said it sounded like crap back then too.

Anyone that says that the new Grease DVD audio sounds bad must just be a really negative person. The audio sounds great, a lot better then VHS. I wish all of this nit-picky bitching would end, especially on little things like this as well as people bitching about the cases in which DVD's are packed in. I've seen a lot of that around here. WHO THE HELL CARES? It's the DVD contents that counts. I swear, some people would complain if George Bush gave us another tax return...

Personally, I'd love to give back last years $300 if he'd give back the 15K I've lost in the market since he was (S)elected President.

Edit:
BTW back on topic I love the sound on the new Grease dvd but I sure wish Disney would have put all of their Platinum dvds in matching cases.

Everyone's opinion differs, and everyone has a right to their opinion. Please refrain from saying things like "WHO THE HELL CARES?" -- it's not polite. Some people do care, and it's their right to care and to not be attacked by others for caring.

It's also your right to not care quite so much about packaging or remixes....that's fine.

If you don't agree with the other posters, you can simply state so, and say how you think it sounds, and leave it at that.

And buffalobill -- I'm not quite sure what the Platinum DVD cases have to do with Grease.

I was commenting on this and pretty much just assumed the difference in Platinum packaging was what was being referred to. There was no malice intened, just a comment.

Actually, I complained when he gave the first tax return. There was no point to it (other than trying to make him popular). Now the economy is crap, government budget is back in the red, focus is back abroad. I stuck my return in savings and didn't spend a cent. Unless Bush turns this economy around, he'll be a one termer like daddy.

Back on topic: I have no problem with the audio, but those who REALLY know and love the movie notice something different about it that they don't like. If you like it, cool.

I wouldn't say i was a negative person at all and rarely complain about any dvds' it's just that Grease is one of my favorite movies and to me this new soundtrack kills the movie a bit and just seems to sound pimp. After all the soundtrack is half of the movie. It's the same mix as the theatrical re-release that i went to see back in 98 and everyone i went with agreed that the music had been ruined,so it's not just me.Whoever remixed it has no idea how music should sound and did a terrible job.

Can we please try to keep the pointless, irrelevant "political commentary" elsewhere? It has no place here, and only serves to derail this thread.

Regarding the audio, I can hear a difference in the new 5.1 mix, but not enough to say that it ruins the experience for me. It just sounds "different."

On a side note, I haven't listened to the Dolby 2.0 surround track yet, but I had heard that it was supposed to contain the original mix. Is that not true?

Ugh. I just finished watching Grease and while the audio sounds great during dialog, the audio during the songs is simply terrible. I am not an audiophile, indeed, my equipment for watching is a PowerBook with a Koss PortaPro headphone–not exactly a hi-fi digital dolby receiver/speaker system–but all of my other DVDs sound just fine to my ears. The audio mix during the songs is awful, and for a musical, that is very bad. I love Grease, but I am very unhappy with this DVD release.
