best news i've heard in a while. the current version looks/sounds pretty good, but this movie deserves a high quality criterion release. i hope they have some good extras on it!

Wow!
That is fantastic! I love it when I hold out for a potential re-release of a movie I like, and then it comes true..... in this case Criterion style! Excellent news.

Lovely.

One of my faves, I will definately pick this up. Terry Gilliam commentary maybe? Another doc likes the one on 12 Monkeys? Oh, the possibilities!

I believe it...

But I SERIOUSLY doubt that date will hold up. Criterion does take their time, thankfully!

I highly doubt this will happen. But if it does I'll get it for sure.

It will. Gilliam just did interviews/introductories for 8 1/2 and Children of Paradise.

George Lucas did the interview for Hidden Fortress... does that mean there's a Criterion edition of Star Wars in the works?

Or THX 1138

Detroit, as your attorney, I advise you to be more optimistic!

If it comes out, I'll buy it in a second..

I'd be all over a Criterion of THX-1138. Hell, I'd be all over a bare bones version of it. It's one of the last movies I have on VHS, and I'm dying to replace it.

mother of god.....(stunned silence)......

Well that made my millenium. A Gilliam commentary would always be sweet, but it would be just as sweet to get a Benicio Del Toro and Johnny Depp commentary as well. More deleted scenes, if any, would also be welcome, added back via branching or just by themselves.

Is it 2003 yet?

Considering Gilliam has done a commentary for all his other Criterions, I think that is a given.

As for Johnny Depp and Del Toro, I don't think so. Depp hasn't done one yet (despite their being a roundtable commentary on From Hell) and Del Toro is busy with that new Law & Order.

BT(Johnny Depp)W, I just listened to the Ed Wood commentary. It's not entirely scene-specific and it's a group commentary (seperatly recorded) with Burton, Landau and the Writers. This is easily the best Burton-Film commentary yet, thanks to Landau and the Writers.
Landau also acts as the commentary-host speaking in Lugosi's Hungarian accent! Very cool...

wow, i may have to add this one to my collection when it comes out. i'm still amazed they took an essentially unfilmable book, and actually made a good movie without changing the story.

how about a hunter s. thompson commentary?

I do not own any Criterion DVDs yet because no movies that I like have yet to be a Criterion version, but this just might be the first. There were many times in college that my roommates and friends and I would just "get messed up" and watch this movie. It will be interesting to see all of the extra stuff about the movie.

So anyway, about how much money do Criterion DVDs generally cost? (I really don't want to pay a ton of movie for the movie, even though I do like it. I think fifty bucks would be stretching at my maximum limit.)

About 30 bucks now-a-days. They still list quite high but most retailers offer a heavy discount because they realize those prices are pretty high in the age of $14.99 2-Disc SE's.

In all honesty there's a lot of SE's out there better than Criterion for a lot cheaper. The main draw of the Criterion label is they give SE's to films that normally wouldn't get them and sell less, hence the higher price.

Oh please! Let's get our priorities straight....
Criterion only releases the finest films.
So it's gotta be HOWARD THE DUCK, complete with a duck-perspective commentary.
And a behind the scenes featurette "How to build a better bomb"
That would be sweet!

I was JUST about to put Fear And Loathing on my potential Christmas gift list. I'll hold out for the Crterion now.

I did wonder why the film never had a bigger edition when it came out, but put it down to the poor BO reception. This'll redress the balance, especially if there are some nice extras!

THX-1138 - if this is a rumor, I hope it comes true. There was a fairly nice transfer of this to UK laserdisc quite a few years back (early 90s), which knocked the socks off the US edition, so a good quality print/master does exist.

What's wrong with the current Universal American Graffitti SE? I thought it had a fair number of extras.

Awesome that it will fall into my price range. For some reason, I had always thought that Criterion DVDs were some 100 dollar beasts right from the get-go, and only got more expensive once they were out of print. Thanks for the heads up. I'll definitely be adding this to my collection.

What do Gilliam's introductions have to do with a Criterion of F&LILV? It would be a better argument to say, "Brazil is a Universal title, Fear and Loathing is a Universal title, so I can't see it being that big of a stretch for Criterion to be releasing it." Instead you just connected to completely unrelated Gilliam-Criterion incidences. As said before, George Lucas has done intros, also Robert Altman and Peter Bogdanovich have done an intros - that does not mean their films will come out on Criterion DVD.

Solid, that wasn't ment to be too seriously, hence the grinning.
But then again, it isn't too far fetched either is it?

Bubble, AFAIK THX 1138 isn't even a rumor, that was just wishfull thinking.

Oh, great, look at this hubbub I created. There are no rumours of a THX 1138 Criterion Collection beyond this little thread, so don't start jumping for joy.

And I have read the book.
