Movies about Haunted Mansions
There's this movie in the theaters right now, Haunted Mansion, which I'm about to see in a few weeks despite all the bad reviews it got so far.
Yes, I admit it: I like this kind of movies. Scary movies. Especially if they're about gloomy, old mansions with lots of rooms and dark secrets. Of course all of these movies use tons of clichés (no such movie without the obligatory thunderstorm and squeaky doors etc), but hey, every genre has its clichés, after all .Now, to get to the point: I'm looking for such Haunted-Mansion-with-squeaky-doors-and-dark-attics-Movies. What I have found so far is this specimen: It's called "Grandma's House" and is now available on DVD. I haven't seen this movie yet, but I've ordered the DVD. If anyone knows this flick, please speak up and tell me a line or two about it. And if you happen to know other good, scary movies, let me know, too ![]() ------------------ Unca Dom dvdfile.com moderator dominikpfleghaar@netscape.net |

Hey Dominator, The Rock can't think of any scary movie off-hand (though, if you want a movie that creeped The Rock out but is probably considered more of a suspense or mystery type, get When A Stranger Calls Back).
However, The Rock directs you to this article that appeared in a recent issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine. It details what they think are the twenty-five scariest movies ever. While you may have seen many of them, hopefully there will be a few ones on there that are new to you. - You've been Rocked! Hey...
Is that "Grand mother's House" DVD Region 1? Never heard of the company Omega before. I love haunted house movies, though the reamke of The Haunting did suck big time. How did they give that plum assignment to Jan De Bont!? ------------------ Peter M. Bracke Editor |

Yes, it's a region 1 disc.
I don't buy any other region discs (my player couldn't play them, anyway). Follow this link to the place where I've found it. And the studio is "Simitar", according to the retailer's info. ------------------ Unca Dom dvdfile.com moderator dominikpfleghaar@netscape.net [This message has been edited by Dominik Pfleghaar (edited 08-01-1999).] |

Simitar...yes, they do some of your lower tiere/b-movies. Whether it be horror or the ever popular erotic thriller, Simitar is often the one to handle the DVD.
Grandma's House seems to be one of these titles. Is that true Dominator? The Rock DVDFile.Com Moderator MostElectrifying@netscape.net ------------------ The Rock says: Who is this roody-poo? [This message has been edited by Rock (edited 08-02-1999).] |

Whyme,
why not? ![]() Is this the movie you're talking about (from 1958)? Sadly, it seems not (yet) to be available on DVD nor LD (am I very wrong?) And according to the IMDB there's a remake (or at least a movie with the same title) due to be released this year... ------------------ Unca Dom, DDS-088 dvdfile.com moderator dominikpfleghaar@netscape.net |

The original The Haunting directed by Robert Wise is by far the best haunted house film. Their was a P&S laser version many years ago but only the more recent (but not recent) widescreen version is acceptable. Although most of this movie was filmed indoors, it's a panavision film.
Get it. |

I have "The Haunting" (2.20:1 Panavision) on a VHS tape I ordered from England a few years ago ('BD' = Before DVD
) and it is the greatest. Black-and-white, glorious mono sound, and all, it still is just about the best movie of its kind. Another good (fun) one was "House" (1986), starring William Katt (inevitably followed by "House" II, III and IV). And I just remembered yet another: "The Changeling" (1979), starring George C. Scott (a Canadian movie, no less!) - now that I think of it, it is probably as good as "The Haunting" - it sure scared the wits out of the young lady I saw it with!... Maybe they will all make an appearance on DVD one day! ! ! |

The House on Haunted Hill has been on LD at least twice, once packaged with The attack of the 50-Foot Woman and recently in a letterboxed (1.85) version. It will be on DVD very shortly, packaged with The Bat. HHH is a lot of fun; I've never seen The Bat. The DVD is from Roan, and I think it's letterboxed.

The Image web site DVD calendar lists the Roan DVD of The Bat/The House on Haunted Hill (both are Vincent Price films, BTW) as being available on Aug 10, with a suggested retail price of $29.95. DVD Express has the title available for preorder for $20.96 (the best price reported by dvdpricesearch.com).
