Keeping track of your DVD's

How do you keep track of your DVD's?

I've noticed that a lot of you use DVDaficianado.com, but I don't care much for it. Right now, I use an excel spreadsheet that calculates a bunch of statistics (average cost, total cost, number of titles, etc), but it can be a pain to add new titles to the list.

Anyone know of any better ways to go about doing this?

DVD Profiler's my pick for this .. the new version (2) has some great statistic charts (such as the number of discs you have in the various types of cases!)

I don't really see the need. I have them lined up nicely on the shelf to look at and show my buds, why do I need them on the computer??

Just wondering what you guys use the lists for...

I use Excel as well. That way I can statistically monitor the list any way I want. The options are literally limitless of how you want to set up the spreadsheet.

My "to buy" list I keep on my PDA.

Personally, I liked seeing what films other members own, and like to see if we share any interests. So I give them the same chance also to see what I own.

Plus, I do a lot of dvd trading and need a list to show.

I find the statistics interesting (avg price and total money spent), and I can use them to impress my friends. Example: a friend of mine was bragging about his $300 DVD-player, but I whipped out my spreadsheet and showed him how I've spend $1945 on DVD's...that shut him up.

The reason I made it initially was so I could tell what movies I was missing from my collection (when people "borrow" them), and I occasionally still use it for that purpose...

I guess you could use it to determine how close your taste matched theirs... I can see that.

I don't have to worry about that, the only person allowed to borrow my movies is my Mother, who I live with at the moment. Solves the problem right there!

I've tried several different methods.

First I just wrote up a list in Word, and that suited me for a while. Then when I joined this board I noticed a lot of people had their collections up and decided to show mine off too. So then I started cataloging them with DVDAfficianado, but realized I really want to comment on these discs, which to my knowlege I can't do there; after that I listed them on Amazon.com with up to 200 characters per item on my "Listmainia" list. That was okay until I had so much to say about a disc that I needed more space. So I'm off designing my own collection website (thanks to multiple people on this board; they know who they are.) I've decided to review every disc I own on the site, and as such it won't be opening until I get them all up, which will be sometime next year. Until then my Afficinado link is still in my signature. As of tomorrow I will have 21 titles when I add E.T. to my collection (which I have added in my sig and on Afficiadano a bit early.)

You can indeed add your own comments to your collection using DVDAficionado. Just select the title you want to add a comment to and then under "My DVDs" select "Edit My Titles" and you can add whatever information you desire.

DVDProfiler has much better features and abilities than DVDAficionado or anything you're going to be able to create yourself without too much trouble. I suggest you check it out.

I keep it all in a Lotus Approach database. That way I can track multiple options, and it's pretty easy to convert it into a text file which I can paste onto my web site.

I use DVDProfiler. It's an incredible free program. Adding titles is easy (online) but you don't have to be online to view, edit, etc. Give it a try!

I don't have to keep track of them. They sit obediantly on the shelf until I call them.

I also use Access for tracking my DVDs. I have my DVDs in two different shelving units so it is convenient to track which case a particular DVD is located. I also track the genre and director and can print out a report by these categories.

I also use my print out for my trusted friends that I loan out my DVDs. It can also be my proof to the insurance company if my DVD collection is stolen.

I used to use DVD Profiler, but I switched computers and I really haven't felt like re-entering everything, so now I just have a mental list going.

I didn't think Mac users could use DVD Profiler. Is that true?

It looks like I'm the only one...I use Lotus Notes, which allows me unlimited colorful views of my collection, lets me copy/paste full reviews into a single disk's document (and include my own I might add), has easy logging of when I watch a film so I can tell statistically what my current favorites are, and is easily exportable into Excel for a variety of charts and graphs. It even allows me to paste movie stills or covers into a movie's doc. Too bad such excellent software isn't readily available at your local software store.

I use a Lotus spreadsheet to keep track of what I have, when I bought it, what I plan to buy, and what commentaries I haven't gotten to yet.

I created my own way of keeping track of them with PHP/mySQL:

http://ww.no3rdw.com/movies

I wanted mine to be unique, not have that dvdaffectionado look to it, use the rating scale that I wanted, and let me include whatever charts and stats that I could think up

I use DVDAficionado, mostly for "This is my wish list" needs, or "This is what I have" if somebody wants to borrow a movie and asks "What do you have?". I used to use an Excel spreadsheet, but it got to be a pain to maintain. I still occasionally update it, just in case DVDAF goes down for good, but not terribly often. DVD Profiler has more options and more information, but I like the list w/ thumbnails of the covers that DVDAF has.. I'll check out DVD Profiler one of these days..

well, i'll tell ya, its pretty rough on the stuff. 'scuse me...I've had a few lagers. 3rd bowl...I'm wasted. but since I pull in about 8 dvds a week(average over last few months), and I'm working so much I'm delerious, with little time to even add to DVDAF. but they are my choice. nice, simple and fast. submit yer title and pic correctly....and BAM! you too could be a preferred user. they have FAR fewer glitches than Profiler.also, I could care less how much I spend, what date I bought it...all that crap. just show me what I got. DVDAF rules baby!!!!!!2 cents only.

somehow dvd aficionado sucks because not all movies can be listed no chance for me with "michael jordan to the max" and "das boot superbit". dvdprofiler is good but it's no use if you have a mac and they not planning to release it there

This program works well for me. I have 4 columns for
my collection- TITLE, FORMAT (widescreen or fullscreen
or both), AUDIO and COMMENTS (features). I share my
DVDs with the guys at work so I need a way to keep track of
what's missing and also to share my list with them.
