E.T. the Extra-Invertibrae...

Okay, so now that a lot of you got your E.T.'s, here's a question for you: where's the spine? I know, I know. I got the '82 version on there, quit bitching. But seriously, my collection looks weird with this one spine with nothing on it.

Friend: "What's this?"

Me: "It's E.T., I traded the spine in for the 1982 version."

Does Spielberg think that we were so excited to get this, that we have it proudly displayed above our TV on a collectable plate holder?

I know this is nit-picking, but everyone is quietly mumbling about it, so I decided to write about it.

Okay, am I now officially the only person in the world who can't get movies before their release date? I've been all over this damn city and nobody ever releases their movies early.

I have another complaint about the packaging. The security tape actually lifted some of the printing off the cardboard. :rar:

I hate this more than you can possibly imagine. Happened on my Terminator SE. A few other discs too, but pretty minimal, since now I'm extra careful about tearing this stuff off.

We'll see how I fare with E.T., which I just picked up.

EDIT: I was mostly successful. A tiny bit came off on the edges.

But the STUPID thing is that the security warning sticker on the top of the DVD was UNDER a bar code sticker on the back of the DVD, top right, which said it was widescreen. So I had to remove that barcode sticker first, which tore off some of the paint, remove the security sticker, then re-apply the bar code sticker so it would hide the torn paint.

Who comes up with this packaging?

This is the most Godawful packaging since last year's Paul Verhoeven SE double feature (Basic Instinct, Total Recall). Couldn't they have at least put some sort of clear plastic case around the cardboard (like the Usual Suspects SE) to prevent the disc from opening up at an inopportune time? And the lack of the film's title on the spine is perverse.

Oh well, if this is all I have to suffer just to get the '82 version, I shouldn't complain too loudly.

Funny thing. It doesn't look l like the 2-disc set lists at all that it includes the original version.
I wonder if they had all the covers printed before the decision was made to include it?

The packaging truly sucks. My first thought was to stop and look for a copy that actually had a case.

Apparently the answer is yes. Check the disc news section of this site...you can't trust any of the info on the case regarding what's on the discs. Loads of errors due to last-minute changes in the content.

BTW, did anybody get this (widescreen) at KMart for $14.99? I had to go to work, so my sister picked up copies for her and myself. She got them at Target for $16.99. She said KMart only had the fullscreen version.

This rivals Memento LE for the worst packaging. Now that my copy of E.T. has been opened, the cover decides to just pop open and not rest flat. No title on the spine is weak too. This is pretty poor. How about a slipcase? Whatever, after all the shit that this release has been surrounded with, it is finally over...I guess. The '82 version is all that really mattered to me....even if the books is already in the worst condition of any of my DVDs due to the slight tearing all around the edges were the security tape was.

I went and got my copy of E.T. (widescreen) right after I got off from work at Wal-Mart. I know this is nothing new, but they had the fullscreen versions out in plain veiw and had the widescreen versions hidden where you couldn't see them.

Of course, I was strapped for time and had to hurry. I asked the employee working there about the widescreen versions, and he didn't know where they were at. Another customer found them and notified me.

I got my widescreen E.T. dvd(s) and told the employee that there was no way hell I was going to buy a fullscreen version of E.T..

Also, my local Wal-Mart had E.T. for $21.95, so I took the K-mart sales paper and price compared it and got E.T. for $14.95+tax ($16.41).

And the packaging sucks big time. Just another reason for me to hate Universal.

No, but I got it at Wal-Mart for $14.87. They also had Monsters, Inc. for that same price the first day it was released, when KMart also had that for $14.95. They said something about it being changed in their system to that price because they were confident selling it for that. Whatever.

If any of you use DVD Profiler, and want to enter the UPC code to make sure you're tracking the right one (since there can be more than one code for a single title-even for the same region), make sure you keep that sticker, since the UPC doesn't appear to be on the "case."

Also, if you ever decide to pick this up used, you'll probably have to open the box and look at the first disc, which says "anamorphic widescreen" in small print around the inner ring of the disc, to make sure you get the right one. Even though the stickers indicate which version it is, there is nothing on the "case" itself that tells you which it is.

I bought mine at Wal-Mart today for the nifty price of $14.87. The packaging is sweet, except the no spine thing...it's kinda odd. And another reason I'm pissed at Universal is those goddamn stickers. They take off part of the cardboard colouring. What the Hell? Why put it on the box if it rips it apart???

Otherwise, nice DVD. An essential addition to my collection. I wish I could afford the nicer set, but this will do just fine.

Video / Audio quality is superb as well.

Mine didn't have any security stickers

I agree that this thing needs a proper outer covering thingy ... or maybe even just a little Velcro thing to keep the covers shut.

I'm sure it looked great when they designed it in the computer...

Ugh, I price-matched the 2-disc at Circuit City with the Kmart ad and got it for... $18.88. They thought the advertised price was after the $4 off for buying the batteries.

And the packaging does suck.

Hey, did anyone else get a free poster given to them? The lady at the desk of the Fred Meyer out here in Portland, Oregon (Fred Meyers are in the Krogers chain on the east coast, they're supermarkets--kinda like Wal-Marts but cooler) said they were giving away posters with the DVD purchases--so I figured it'd be an 8x11 replica or something, right?

She's looking around, can't find the poster she's supposed to be giving away, and then she goes "OH. there it is"

it's a full theatrical size 3-D repress of the re-release poster.

..

...I have a feeling that wasn't meant to be part of the giveaway, but I'm not sure. The poster itself looks like it'd go for 15 bucks. Anyone else get one?

The only trouble I had with the security stickers was a little bit of glue that was left on the exposed portion of the disc holders at the top of the case. But the packaging overall is a little bit of a tragedy. All the information on the back is wrong, no title on the spine. It baffles me that Speilberg actually approved this.

On the other hand, considering all the last minute changes that took place it's a miracle that we didn't get it in a plain CD jewel case. There's always a bright side, I guess.

Oh and I glad they didn't drop the ball on the audio/video portion of it. Not a demo by any means, but better than I was expecting.

wow.......just opened it now and yeah the packaging does really suck. i was a nervous reck trying to take the security tape off but i was successful doing it . and damn now the tape is off i cant keep it shut without putting it in my dvd shelf or putting a paperweight or something like that on it.
worst part had to be the top security tape though cuz it had a barcode widescreen sticker there too.

I got mine yesterday and had no trouble with the security stickers...I'm one of the lucky ones, I guess. The no title thing aggravates the hell out of me, but I'll live with it.

***SPOILER***

After watching the Steelers kick ass, I put in E.T. and shook our little house down during E.T.'s glorious DTS departure!

i was about to buy the 2xDVD before looking over it... every copy i saw was 'wrecked' and flimsy looking... after seeing the 3xDVD, i re-considered it... but decided to check the forums before i bought either of em... that didn't happen either... on my way home when me brother was driving me, we stopped at a shop and i showed him teh box, he said he wanted that ver instead anyways -- so, $75CAD later, i own the box. it's more durable than that 2xDVD version, but i think it could have used some velcro on the flap as well...

Damn.

This is a great little disc, but the packaging DOES suck. The no spine thing is annoying, but really the whole cardboard pisses me off. Anyone else notice there's a (probably black) security strip inside the flap with the insert? I tried to get my hand inside there to take it off and the back packaging ripped a bit. (Luckily I had transparent tape handy.) Also, I can't get it to close. I may have to apply velcro (sp?) or something, like Disney did with the cardboard cover for Beauty and the Beast. Hope Back to the Future has better packaging. That one's case looks like a normal multidisc keepcase, but so did E.T.'s in this picture that DVDFile posted on June 6 along with the inital press release.

I'm pretty sure BTTF has a 3-disc keep case like the Brotherhood of the Wolf set.

From what I hear it's out in Britain already, with a really nice cardboard case...but they have limited features.

I slipped an exacto knife into the flap to tear off the black security device (and then tweezers to retrieve it) because it set off alarms in four stores I went into after buying it at Circuit City. These things annoy me more than you can imagine. Go into any store and take a moment to listen to the alarm system going off -- it's nonstop. And they're beginning to defeat the purpose because the security guards are becoming numb to it and just wave people on through.

Not only did my copy have three security stickers, and not only was the front flap stuck to the inside, but disc 1 was actually attached to the packaging with one glob of that same gummy adhesive.

Yeah, you read that right.

The disc was stuck to the box.

I pried out the DVD, thinking at first that it was just a stiff release catch, and then saw the gunk on the underside. I had to use a piece of Scotch tape to try to pull it off the disc (my old standby method of getting rid of price tag residue). Eventually after a round of that, and wiping off the rest with a damp rag, the worst of it came off.

All I can say is that I'm glad this didn't happen to disc 2. ::wry look::

I like the packaging overall, except for the spine. It really does need a slip cover like so many other cardboard foldouts. The stickers caused me no problems though.

I got it for $14.87 at Wal-Mart at 12:30AM on Tuesday. I think someone had to do the price match at that location before you or it was $19.95. Wal-mart does that all the time, as soon as they price match one, the rest in the store are re-priced.

Stinkpalm, you're 17 right? Do you get a lot of shit for liking older movies like BTTF?? I'm 22 and when I was in High School I always said BTTF was my favorite movie and I got ridiculed to no end. Other 80's movies as well. I didn't care (not the most popular guy anyway ) but I was wondering how you're buds look at your slightly dated tastes

well its actually not that much different. i dontreally think of my tastes as dated though. i like back to the future, ET, Neverending Story, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, UHF and other "dated" movies such as this because i loved them years ago and was exposed to them when i was younger. i just dont really care about what others think personally. but a lot of my friends bash me for movies like ET, Beauty and the Beast, and the Pixar Movies i own. but i dont care. i love those movies and ill probably always love them. not my fault they are too insecure to admit whats a good movie.
then i also have friends my age that have a lot of the same tastes as me. including disney movies (most kids my age wont even give new disney movies a look)

Well you stand up for your tastes and I must say...

Bravo!

I have the curse of liking 80's music because my Mother played it all the time when I was a kid. It's hard justifying having Phil Collins and INXS CD's in your CD Binder to the ladies in college, but I just can't take them out...

Damn my Mother....:rar:

But I got my 4 disc set for $27. Yippee!!! At Suncoast if you pre-ordered, the set was marked down from $70 to $60 and then I had $30 in rebates for being a member.

WHO ARE THE BEATLES?!?!?!?!?!!?!?

Are today's teens REALLY that bad? Damn. The Beatles are the best, and even though I was born after they broke up I have all the CD's and love them to death. An Ex-Girlfriend actually got me into them when I was about your age.

Don't get me wrong, I like some current stuff too (Jimmy Eat World, White Stripes, The Strokes) but there's so much "classic" stuff that kicks ass there's no reason to let MTV ruin it for you...

Anyway, rant over.
