TV vs MOVIES on DVD
It's all well and good that the studios have found a new market in DVD for selling their old TV shows. I admit I have a few (Simpsons, Fawlty Towers) and will pick up some when they are released (Band Of Brothers, Millennium).
But here is my issue with all of this: why are they wasting time on some marginal TV series when there are a lot of great films that have yet to make it to DVD. Not just favourites, but classics! I fear that this rush to release seasonal collections of TV shows will eat up so much of their time that the films that NEED to be released will continue to be ignored. I am talking about films such as: The Adventures Of Robin Hood The African Queen East Of Eden The Grapes Of Wrath Kagemusha King Kong Little Big Man Little Caesar Public Enemy The Magnificent Ambersons Meet Me In St Louis The Mission My Darling Clementine Once Upon A Time In America One Two Three Ragtime Rules Of The Game Ryan's Daughter Wait Until Dark not to mention the Star Wars and Indiana Jones trilogies! Wouldn't you like to see films such as these released prior to most of the TV shows they've announced? What do you think? And which films are the studios overlooking in the rush to get TV fare on DVD?

Two observations:
1) To each their own! I personally would enjoy "Married...with Children" much more than I would enjoy "Ragtime". I certainly hope we BOTH get what we want, though! 2) Some of those films, like Adv/Robin Hood, are undergoing restoration and preparation for DVD release. Some are awaiting the right window of release. To with, Robin Hood will be released in 2003, which happens to be it's anniversary! To fill the gap, why shouldn't a few TVshows be released on DVD? |

Interesting that a user named "tvboy" is advocating more films over TV content.
![]() You're right, although, at this point there's a lot more TV shows I want on DVD than movies at this point. Well mathematically they might be around the same, but I'm not counting stuff like Star Wars and the Disney Platinum Editions, which I know will eventually come and whatever.

With few exceptions, television is a medium of mediocrity in terms of content. But when a film is great, it can be a life-changing experience.

We can't get Raiders Of The Lost Ark on DVD, but by God, we can wallow in the glory that is the first-season boxed set of Mad About You!

Why should the HUGE fanbase of MaY - a show with demographics toward females, which may be why you choose to bash it - not have access to an inexpensive ($16.99 at Target!) DVD release of the entire first season. When two of the characters, including Oscar-winning Helen Hunt's character of Jamie Buchman, showed up in a cameo on an episode of Friends in the Warner DVD release of Friends Season 1, Columbia got so saturated with requests for Mad About You, that they felt it was stupid not to strike while the iron was hot. It was already on the table; this just convinced them to pull the trigger. Personally, I'm glad. My wife isn't the MaY fan in this house; *I* am. I enjoyed the show when it aired, and will enjoy it this weekend when I can sit down and watch it. Whenever Lucas pulls the trigger on the Indy discs, I'll enjoy those, too! I think this thread has been set up with the idea that there are only so many "slots" for DVD releases, and that the TV-on-DVD releases are somehow taking away from the availability of film DVD releases. While it is true that there are only so many resources to go around at a studio, the DVD industry is booming so large and making so much profit, it's silly for those same studios not to invest in more resources. But wait - most of them have! It's just that it takes a hell of a lot longer to make a presentable DVD for a movie over 20 years old than it does to turn around the average sitcom. And gathering supplements for the film? Takes a lot longer than the non-supplements on the average TV package. I understand you guys are just letting off steam about your favorite films not finding their way to DVD. But TV releases aren't your scapegoat. Not really. That's all I have to say on this. Thanks for listening; talk amongst yourselves! ![]() |
