New Criterions announced

Was browsing the Criterion website (www.criterionco.com) and found out a few new releases that have been announced. They would be...

Band of Outsiders (Bande à part) - Jean-Luc Godard

Trouble in Paradise - Ernst Lubitsch

Pépé le Moko - Julien Duvivier

I'm very interested in the first one. Will have to research the other 2. They're all slated for a January release.

IMO, they should've just called it Bande a Part as it's probably more recognizable under its french title, but that's no real biggie. I'll probably pick up Contempt sight unseen.

Not really.
Probably the LEAST amount of titles compared to any other DVD studio.
They release maybe a dozen every MONTH? So I'd have to disagree. The more the better I say.

Put me down for a copy of Contempt, please. And while I'm on the topic of Criterion November releases, Solaris looks mighty nice as well (hmmm...need money).

166 since March 1998 = 3 per month

In September '02 = 3 releases
In October '02 = 2 releases

I love Criterion Collection's covers. They are beautiful!

I want to get all these movies eventually. It matters not if I do not know anything about the films. It promises to be entertaining.

As far as too many Criterion releases, well, I don't believe they have many as indicated by Marq and Riedenschndeider.

They have great selections.

thanks for the facts, jack!

Thus concludes the debate. Criterion definitely does NOT release too many DVDs.

I was indicating that they have few releases.

I am quite excited for TROUBLE IN PARADISE. It's a fantastic movie. There's not enough Lubitsch on dvd(just picked up Shop Around the Corner, now Warners has to put out TO BE OR NOT TO BE).
I am also going to puchase Contempt, Solaris and Band of Outsiders.

That Trouble in Paradise cover is nasty. The other ones are great though.

They only put out 2 or 3 titles per month...that's not too many.
Considering that Criterion releases some very fine films that you would not be able to see otherwise, this is a monthly treat!

Bande à part, now I get the name of QT's Production company - A Band Apart. May have to check that one out.

I read that he has a huge, no GIGANTIC Bande à part-poster in his house...

I doubt it's still up... On the Reservoir Dogs features he goes on about how he isn't really a big Godard fan anymore and that he prefers the work of Melville. I'm guessing this is because he burnt himself out on G's work by over-watching it.

Why did Criterion release Armageddon and The Rock. I honestly do not see them as classics myself, and do not see how they meet the criteria.

Well...

Well, since I hate most of Godard's movies (I won't disagree that he's influential, but "influential" does not automatically translate to "good"), I can't say I'm that excited for "Contempt" or "Band of Outsiders." But I can't wait for "Solaris", "Trouble In Paradise" or the rumored "Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas" disc. And I'm still waiting for "The Exterminating Angel." I mean, dammit, "Discreet Charm" and "That Obscure Object of Desire" were GREAT! Criterion already sells a VHS, what's the holdup?
I'm also highly interested in "Pepe Le Moko", but I agree, a little research is in order.

From the http://www.criteriondvd.com FAQ: "Since Criterion is supposed to release "important films," why did Criterion release Armageddon?

Criterion makes every effort to represent every genre in its releases. Armageddon is considered to fulfill the "big-budget summer blockbuster" genre."

Strange answer I know...

It's almost 100% that Criterion will release "La Strada" in 2003.

:p
