Beauty and the Beast / Philip Glass...

This just in from Criterion...

New 5.1 Mix of Philip Glass' Opera to Appear on Upcoming Beauty and the Beast DVD Re-release

Renowned composer Philip Glass has created a new 5.1 surround mix of his Beauty and the Beast opera for inclusion on Criterion's upcoming DVD re-release of Jean Cocteau's classic film. Glass' opera will be one of four audio tracks available on the newly-restored Beauty and the Beast, along with audio commentary by film historian Arthur Knight, a second commentary by writer and cultural historian Sir Christopher Frayling, and the film's original soundtrack. Look for Criterion's Beauty and the Beast re-release in early 2003.

Being a big Cocteau/Philip Glass fan, this has me quite enthused...

That's simply brilliant news
I have the Opera on CDs, and it's one of my (many) Glass' favorites.

Believe it or not, but this was the reason I held out on the initial Criterion release (as much as I love Cocteau and this film).
I don't know - I somehow knew there's bound to be a re-release with Glass' score

That original disc may go up in value though. So, unless you need the cash, I'd hold on to it.

that's amazing news. thanks. this is especially good because i read that glass was allowed to write a new score for the film ONLY if he agreed to never release it on video or dvd--i.e. live performances only. they must have worked something out ($$$).

Wow, this really sounds like a must-own disc! Wonder what the 'More!' means at the end of the features? Did they run out of room to describe them I noticed the same thing with the 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' entry...

In any case, I can't wait to get my hands on this one...

I think "more" just means that there are some bonuses that aren't finalized. Its probably easier to post that than to list something that may not be able to be included because of rights issues or something along those lines. They probably avoid some complaints by doing it that way.

Phillip Glass fans will be thrilled to know that he has a new cd in collaboration with the Los Angeles Master Chorale. One of the pieces is called Itaipu. It's available now.

BatB

I have the original criterion DVD of BatB and I assume there 2 items excusive to the original pressing.

-the cover
-the old restoration demo
-the 30m(?) documentary from a 1970's film school film out of south carolina.

While there is a slim chance the 30 minute show will be the "..and more" even it was likely removed for space reasons. I do believe I hold a collectors item.
