Are "Easter eggs" a good thing?
I guess alot of people feel differently, but what exactly is the point of "hidden" features? When you buy a DVD, you presumably pay for the entire production - other than being a silly giommick, I don't understand the point of including items that a viewer has to jump through hoops to find. Way too high of a geek factor. I guess videogames may, but i never really thought of watching a movie and bonus as being a game - i.e. presenting a challenge. Maybe I am just grumpy . . .

I really don't care to search for them, so I just check out the web sites that keep track of them, and let other people find them first. They were cool at first when DVDs came out, but now, they're just a pain to find or stumble across.
For example, on the Phantom Menace DVD, I find the different menu choices to be cool to look at, but I don't want to have to type some code in during the FBI screen, or select a different title track, to switch between the menu layouts. I should just be able to click on a menu choice that allows me to switch to a different menu layout, like on the Bedazzled remake DVD. I have better things to do with my time than to try to find unadvertised features on each DVD.

Ahhh...I remember the day I was stumbling around my Mallrats dvd and then MAGICALLY Kevin Smith appeared and scolded me for watching too many dvd's. I could take 'em or leave 'em for the most part. However, we do have an easter egg to thank for the rare glimpse of John C Reilly's ass on Magnolia.

Hey Flix,
We have a jillion threads about easter eggs, but not a lot of them are related. Here are a few links: http://www.dvdfile.com/interactive/f...ghlight=easter http://www.dvdfile.com/interactive/f...ghlight=easter http://www.dvdfile.com/interactive/f...ghlight=easter http://www.dvdfile.com/interactive/f...ghlight=easter http://www.dvdfile.com/interactive/f...ghlight=easter Personally, I like easter eggs. I get a kick out of a little extra something being there. On another note, I don't think it should be like pulling teeth to find the easter eggs either. Perhaps a fair comprimise would be that on the back of a DVD it could say, "Contains x number of easter eggs" that way a person knows how many to look for. Around here we all seemed to be mixed on easter eggs, some in favor, some against, I think more are against. We've even had polls and the idea of a easter egg section was outvoted. Also since we are not talking about a particular title or label, this is more a Soapbox topic, so we'll probbaly move this thread. -Flash

I don't mind the occasional easter egg but when I look at the list of ones on a disc like Spider-Man it kinda irks me that I have to go back and forth to a website & the disc a dozen times to see all of the information that they've hidden. They should have a menu option on the disc to tell you where the other easter eggs are for those who don't feel like jumping through a thousand hoops to find everything.

Some of them are pretty cool when they can't really be considered bonus features on their own but they make nice little diversions.
I love the ones in Toy Story 2 (the animation test of when the car drives off) and Monsters Inc (Pixar Air Show). |

I like easter eggs.
I don't think actual extras listed on the back of the packaging such as "deleted scenes" belong hidden. I think main extras should be easy to navigate from the menus. And I don't like typing in codes to find the eggs, they don't seem to work with all players.

Easter eggs are silly
Fortunately most of them are worthless as well. Most of the
easter eggs are DVD production credits, trailers for other films, etc. What I do is wait until other people find the eggs and post them on other websites, then I print the sheet for the DVD I have so I don't have to look for them myself. |

I don't mind the ocassional easter egg, but I don't like easter eggs which are part of the special features.

Easter eggs that are little bonus features that you're pleasantly surprised to find and wouldn't feel cheated not to find:
Easter eggs that are actual significant bonus features that require you to jump through hoops to access: BAD (See Harry Potter deleted scenes)

I like the easter eggs ok. I don't look for them myself. I check out the net to find easter eggs and then check 'em out on the DVDs. Most of them are pretty much throwaway.. Certainly not worth jumping through hoops for. Some of them can be pretty cool though.

Easter eggs could be fun. There just something extra. A new experience of sorts. After you finish the real extras, you still have the easter egss to hunt for.But some are useless such as DVD credits. Sure they should be credited, but as an easter egg?
Moulin Rouge has 15 easter eggs. One or two are nice little behind-the-scenes clips, but others are just two second things that aren't worth your time. But easter eggs do help out in some ways. At times a subject doesn't quite fit into a documentary, so it's an easter egg. Or sometimes a little clip may be too obscure and can't stand on its own as a bonus feature, that's when an easter egg is necessary. |
