The commentary is also on the DD disc, and it's a very good one. I sampled some portions of the DTS disc at an A/V store on Ventura, doing some A-B comparisons between the two versions, and the difference was minimal at best. The DD version is excellent in its own right. IMO, the DTS soundtrack is not worth the extra money, plus the added annoyance of having to get up and change discs.
Sometimes I prefer the DTS versions (Mouse Hunt, for instance), but Dances With Wolves is not one of those times. Do yourself a favor and stick to the DD version. [This message has been edited by Dehrian (edited 08-30-1999).] |

Ok I did not think that there was a second comentary track on DTS, The DD version has the Costner/Producer comentary.
I just wish this disk had the directors cut and comentary by Floyed Red Crow or some of the other Lakota actors. ------------------ Istagi *Feather Head* Moderator of the Now Playing Forum DDS-351 |

I just read a post in DVDTalk that said the DVD does have the director's cut on it.
It also said that Costner was upset with the studio when they released the extra long version of the movie and that the extra 40 minutes really didn't add anything to the movie. ------------------ -David |

Blade I think you should listen to the commentary and hear Coster explain that he liked the extended version and wished he had released it in the first place.
I am not sure what is right but I am more willing to beleive the recorded voice of Costner than some report. I found the 4 hour version much more entertaining and explanitory. Have you even seen the 4 hour version???? ------------------ Istagi *Feather Head* Moderator of the Now Playing Forum DDS-351 |

David Brown Eyes,
I'm looking forward to hearing the entire Director's commentary but wanted to watch the DVD first, so that listening may be a long time in coming. ![]() I don't dispute a word you say, though. I was just repeating what someone I trust posted. He didn't list his source though, and I know [i]I've[/b] been wrong before and wouldn't be surprised to see it happen to someone else. Still, I thought Wolves was a bit long at it's current length myself, though I wouldn't mind watching the long version once to see what I was missing. Thanks for the clarification. ------------------ -David |

David Brown Eyes, I saw the four hour version, and for the most part I hated it. Ruined one of my favorite films. Some of the scenes are interesting to view from an editor's standpoint, and would have made good supplemental viewing, but I'm glad they're gone from the film. They're nothing but trivialities that contribute little or nothing to the film. At three+ hours, the film was long enough, and the edited scenes are in no way compelling enough to justify a four hour version. We should count ourselves lucky that Costner wasn't forced to cut it down to two.

I have to agree with a few of you, the current non-DTS version is JUST FINE and will easily do. Not to mention it's one of the cheaper under-$20 discs.
It's not the most loaded DVD ever, but it pays where it counts. Buy it... you will not be disappointed. `Carl ------------------ Visit C.H.U.D. Cinematic Happenings Under Development www.chud.com carl@chud.com --------------- [This message has been edited by DVD Jedi (edited 09-02-1999).] |
