Red Dwarf!

So my friend just brought over his region 2 Red Dwarf Season 1 DVD.

I've been waiting for this for so long. And they did a great job remastering the video. It looks quite nice, really much better than you would think it should, given the source. Sound is just fine, didn't really notice anything, which is a good thing.

I haven't had a chance to watch any of the extras yet, still making my way across the first disc. But I'll report back when we watch them.

He bought his copy from Amazon UK. It came to around $30, shipped. Not bad at all.

It's been just GREAT watching these episodes again. The last time I saw them was quite a few years ago, and on 5th generation VHS tapes recorded from a group of friends. The DVDs just look and sound fantastic in comparison.

It's worth noting that, while cleaned up, they did not re-do the F/X. It had been rumored that they were going to "fix" the old-skool BBC F/X with new CGI crap, something that would most likely completely change the look and feel of this classic series. I'm so happy they didn't. and I hope when they make it accross the pond to the states they don't touch anything.

I've got this coming as a Xmas present... We're returning back home to the UK in mid-January so I'm going to have to wait 'til I get back

Sounds like an excellent disc from what I've read... at least the BBC gets one right now and again...

They did redo some of the fx using CGI for I believe the VHS (re-) releases and I'm glad they decided to go back to the original versions.

hi seamonkey,
great news! like sidcup said, the last release had redone special effects and really oversaturated colors. do you or anyone know if the r1 dvd's are going to be the redone version or the original? i know you said these are the original on r2, but how about r1? (i'm hoping for the original--i don't like the new effects and "remastered" colors that look like a radiation leak).

The region 1s will be identical to the r2s, in that they'll be the original versions. This is copied straight from reddwarf.co.uk:

"Content-wise, the discs for Series I and Series II will be identical to the UK editions in all but one respect: "There is a terrific featurette on the UK disc which, unfortunately, had to be cut from the US release because the music behind it couldn't be cleared by the publisher for release in the US. It's a shame, but that happens from time to time with programs that are released in both countries. We have tried to make up for it by adding our own extra added value item unique to the US release in the form of two sets of exclusive trading cards which will be available only in the DVD. Each series has its own set of four cards featuring images from the respective series, and we are hoping that fans in the US will enjoy the trading cards as much as fans in the UK will enjoy the extra video feature."

Kick ass. I always felt Red Dwarf's best work was on the lowest budget-looking episodes; it helps the comedy. The later seasons, they had too much money and I don't watch Red Dwarf to see CGI. Rant over.

That's a pretty good price, too! I'll definitely be picking this up. That way I won't have to stay up to catch it on Saturday nights...
February's gonna kill me.

What about season 3, do we have any info for that?

This release is sensational. Going to Blockbuster on pay day night to pick it up for $40AU. RRP is $50 so a good bargain.

The old VHS is wearing out.

R4 version I believe is identical to R2, so you may get it cheaper than buying from the UK.

The current VHS versions and the versions airing on tele are the remastered versions with some editing and new F/X. The DVDs contain remastered copies of the original unedited episodes.
