Walt Disney Treasures wishlist/speculation

So what do you want/expect for upcoming wave(s) of the fantastic Walt Disney Treasures series?
Personally, I'm expecting follow-ups to either/both of the Mickey Mouse (black and white and color) lines. Maltin has referred to Black & White as "Black and White Volume 1."
A Donald Duck collection (or at least part of one) is inevitable, I believe, and I'm hoping that they can get Wartime Cartoons (uncensored) out this next wave.
I'm also hoping for one that showcases some of the Disney's Wonderful World of Color show. Namely, the episode with "An Adventure in Color/Donald in Mathmagicland" along with others.
I'd also love to see "Mars and Beyond" or whatever it's called.
Any other ideas/thoughts?

I'd like another Silly Symphonies...I'm pretty sure theres more than what was on the Silly Symphonies disk. A donald duck one is inevitable. Maybe a collection of various Disney shorts that were used on the Wonderful World of Disney before feature premiers....

Well, it's been pretty heavily discussed that the wartime shorts, Donald Duck, and more Mickey Mouse in color may be in the pipeline for 2004. I've also read somewhere that some TV episodes dealing with space exploration may also be released next year.

I'd like to see more Disneyland/Walt Disney World behind the scenes type of stuff. And the True Life Adventures and Scarecrow of Romney Marsh (Dr. Syn) would pretty much make my day of they ever got the nod.

I was under the impression that this Mickey Mouse in B & W had all of the cartoons. Since it starts with the first and ends with the last.

I want to see True Life Adventures and another Disneyland for it's 50th anniversary. I wouldn't want Walt Disney World since Walt didn't work on it, and little exists beyond that 30 minute film he made about it. They should just stick that on another Disneyland package.

Dear Guys:

I think it would be great to release a Disney Treasury set of the "educational" cartoons Disney made like the above-mentioned "Donald in Mathemagic Land" and "Uncle Scrooge and Money." I'd also like to see Dr. Syn, and a few Donald Duck collections.

Sincerely,

Jthree

The Treasures series would actually be perfect for Song of the South.

Leonard Maltin would be about the only person who could fight for the release of this.

On the B&W Mickey set, he even had an intro to the "Two Gun Mickey" short where mickey has guns and smokes a cigarette, and explains why we're going to see Mickey doing things that seem unusual for him, and explains that we shouldn't apply current-day morals on a 70 year old cartoon.

This sort of intro, and maybe even a longer documentary explaining the time that Song of the South came out would be perfect.

Anybody have any idea if there is a way to send a suggestion about this to Maltin or his office/people, etc. to even try to get the idea out there???

If there's a will, there's a way. Trust me, Leonard Maltin knows how much collector's crave a release of "Song of the South", and I'm sure he's already fighting for this to be made. If not, he probably plans to fight for this to be released some time down the line in the Walt Disney Treasures line of DVDs. Let's just sit tight, and let the good man work with the material he has at his disposal right now.

I would like to see one on Walt Disney World, because that is Walt Disney's crowning achievment.

I wouldn't want it to be like the Disneyland USA one, it should be designed like an extras disc, packed full of info.

What he WANTED TO BUILD would have been his crowning acheivement. But what WAS built hardly constitutes it his crowning achievement, especially since he had little to do with it's construction beyond buying the property and planning an EPCOT that was never built.

That title still falls to Disneyland or Snow White, just because he didn't live long enough to "go beyond the theme park" with Disney World. Plus like I said there is little beyond the 30 minute film that he made.

Only if more exists beyond that film that has Walt hands on the planning should it be made. That will at least show what it could/should have been, contrasting it with what it became. So I'll revise my statement, I'd welcome a Disney World one if there is enough material with Walt to constitute a 2-Disc release. Kind of like a look at an unfulfilled dream of his.

But back on topic... I think Song Of The South will be a Vault Disney title if it does get released. I just do not see it as a Walt Disney Treasure.

In a perfect (politically incorrect) world, we would probably have Song of the South as a Vault Disney title with a nice clean new transfer, brand new retrospective documentaries, and a strong ad campaign to appeal to young and old (nostalgic) consumers alike.

The fact is, most people have forgotten about this film, and if it weren't for splash mountain at Disneyland being based on it, Universities showing it every once and a while, people who are up on their Disney history, or all the people on the internet clamoring for this hot, unattainable item, the chances of this movie ever getting released on any home video format whatsoever would be slim to nill. Leonard Maltin seems to be reviving the past with the releases he's been behind for some of the recent semi-forgotten Disney-produced material that's become available through the Walt Disney Treasures line. I suspect that our best chance of seeing this movie in the near future would be through Walt Disney Treasures.

Now feel free to rebuttal this, but don't expect me to get into any sort of debate over anything. I'm merely stating what I know, and can't conclude whether Leonard Maltin (I know he's not the only person pulling the strings behind the scenes, but he's a big name in these matters right now) has immediate plans for a SOTS DVD or has just hinted at it in recent interviews just to let the die hard fans know that this movie hasn't been totally wiped clean from the Mouse House's memory.

By the way, I would love for them to release the Wartime shorts and the remainder of Silly Symphonies or Mickey Mouse in black & white.

It is my great wish that they do a Treasures 2-disc set having everything to do with "The Haunted Mansion".

It could include:

- a historical feature about its creation - "Haunting the Mansion"
- footage from the ride opening ceremonies
- Disney TV specials (Osmond featurette)
- a complete ride-through with surround-sound
- technical behind-the-scenes animatronics technology
- featurette on costuming
- features on the other mansions throughout the world
- featurette on the sounds and music recording
- Grim Grinning Ghosts music video & sing-a-long
- Promotional artwork gallery
- Gallery of Toys and Souvenirs
- Abandoned concepts for the mansion
- Interactive game "Escape the Haunted Mansion"
- Blueprints and Map of the Mansion
- Recollections of past park employees and famous guests
- Planned Celebrations of the Mansion's upcoming anniversary

A similar disc could be done for the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction. I'd buy.

I see your point Master Gandhi, it's just that since no Disney Treasure has been just a feature and extras, Song Of The South seems misplaced if it were a Treasure release.

A Treasure of the creation of Disneyland attractions would be a very good idea. There must be lots of programs about that!

As with The Reluctant Dragon, the full Song Of The South feature could be "buried" within a Treasures tin, along with the John Henry short (complete with main titles and in 1.66:1 widescreen please!) and other programs thought to need a little "care and attention" in bringing them to the public in this oh so PC times.

How about the uncut clips from Fantasia, showing the ethnic centaurs?

Or Goofy smoking his cigarette?

Or Pecos Bill un-tampered with?

Leonard Maltin could make a pretty good set out ouf these exceprts, as well as new looks on why the company felt they needed to "protect" the audience and placing the films into context.

SOTS would be the main feature on disc one, with bonus features devoted to that on that disc. Disc two could contain the further examples of "not suitable for kids" Disney projects.

Sounds good to me!

I've seen Song of the South theatrically and loved it. If this were a Disney Treasure, I'd have it pre-ordered so fast it would make your head spin.

And to whomever suggested Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean...BRILLIANT IDEA!!! These are two of my favorite Disney attractions...I'd buy those discs instantly as well.

They made some excellent "Disneyland" specials on television for Pirates at least. I think some for Haunted Mansion, too.

I have a question about the reelease schedule for The Disney Treasures? Getting 3 or 4 volumes released each December is great, but it becomes an overload of riches. Too much to view at once. I would much more prefer to a new release every few months - maybe one a quarter. This way it won't seem like such a long wait between releases. Is there a valid marketing reason to releasing the Treasure sets and the Vault Disney's in single annual groups as opposed to one at a time?

I think, in addition to being about to market them together as a set, instead of have promotional spots having to give multiple dates, etc, they also like having once-a-year consistancies.

That's why I think for the longest time, the new animated movie each year was usually released around the same time, so that people could just sort-of go without having to make sure one is showing.

Just like how, if they continue this, we'll just expect new Disney Treasures the first week of December.

Disney marketing treats people like the single-minded, simplistic pattern animals that the bulk of humanity is.

Us few that want more, will probably not get it until the world stops being marketed down to Soccer Moms and Wal-Marts.

Here's what I'm thinking now (after doing a little research) for the main character releases.

Mickey Mouse (Black & White)
There were 74 cartoons done. 34 were on the 1st volume.
A second volume could contain 40 with no problem.

Mickey Mouse (in living color)
There were 43 cartoons done. 25 were on the 1st volume.
A second volume could contain the other 17, but then would seem light, so how about putting his 3 half-hour specials on the 2nd disc (Mickey's Christmas Carol, The Prince and the Pauper, and Runaway Brain).

Goofy is done.

Donald Duck
There were 129 cartoons done. 2 volumes of 45 a piece would work, with a 3rd volume containing 39 cartoons (and they could include the 2 Chip 'n Dale cartoons and the 3 Figaro cartoons on there also.

Pluto
There were 47 cartoons done. So 1 volume could complete him.

I also noticed at the following site:

http://www.teemings.com/shorts/disney/sitemap.html

that there would be about a disc full of the Jiminy Cricket's "I'm no fool!" shorts and a disc full of Jiminy Cricket's "Know Your..." shorts about your body, eyes, ears, etc. I wasn't really a big fan of those, but I'm sure some people are.

Silly Symphonies had 75 cartoons total, and they put 31 on the first volume. Another volume of 44 would complete that set. This one could really be highlighted with Little Hiawatha and King Neptune.

There were also a large amount of the specials (36) that didn't feature any of the named characters. These were things like "Ferdinand the Bull" and "Ben and Me". They could put a volume (or maybe 2 depending on running times) of these.

And of course, the War Time cartoons are in the works (presumably with the title characters as well as the educational cartoons done for the military- without the main characters).

There are also tons of the Educational non-wartime cartoons that can be done too.

Any thoughts?

I have read somewhere (think it was DVDTalk), that there will be three sets released in 2003:

Donald Duck
Mickey Mouse in Living Color - Part 2
Wartime Cartoons

I certainly hope that this will happen, because I do not like the "real" sets (Disneyland U.S.A., Davey Crockett), I only liked the animated sets.

The live ones are the best. Especially Disneyland and Behind The Scenes, cause you actually get to see and hear Walt and their historical.

The animated ones are more of a task to watch, cause there are so many shorts. Shorts which were not designed to be seen in one complete package in one sitting.

If Leonard Maltin keeps up like he is, getting these great collections out and unedited, he should get some sort of award.

Heck, if he can get us Song of the South unedited, he should be knighted or be declared a saint.

I would like some of Disneys educational stuff to come out, like their ocean educational stuff. Song of the South would be ok to release now I think, the NAACP has said that they do not see anything offensive about this movie so I think that might have been a good sign but no....Disney is still scared. When I worked at my video store you wouldn't imagine how many people of all races asked for this movie!

Has this ever made it to a DVD yet? This was a favorite of mine and I'd love to see it again. My Trig teacher in High School actually showed us this in class one day... the only day of that class that I liked! And my pool game was vastly improved after that screening.

While we are on this subject, has there been any hints as to some of the OOP Treasures getting a rerelease? Possibly outside of the tin in some more traditional packaging?

If I were to expect any Disney property to stay out of print until the "next big format", it would be the Treasures line.

The best thing for people who missed them the first time around would be to get the upcoming Region 2 versions and a regionless player.

It'd be cheaper than buying the Region 1 versions on ebay...

While we know what's coming out this year, for 2003, it'd be nice to guess what's left for 2004.

Here would be my guesses/suggestions:

Chronological Donald II
continuation of miscellaneous shorts
Pluto
Chip N Dale
Dr. Syn Alias the Scarecrow
Another collection from the Wonderful World of Disney. Maybe the shows of Ludwig Von Drake.
the Educational Disney (would be nice)

What else could come out for Wave 4 in 2004

Sincerely,

JThree

I know that not everyone can have enough money to buy everything they want - especially me! - but I don't get it when people say that they didn't get a title and then have to pay eBay prices.

Absolutely no offence intended or implied to you MooglePorn and this is NOT directed at you at all, but just made me think. Each year I know that there are these tins coming out and I put away a little money throughout the year. For every disc I buy, I put some away for something else I'll want later on.

That way, come the holiday rush season, I can pretty much afford all the biggies, especially limited titles that will go OOP or hard to find soon after.

Again, no dissing you Moogle, but just pointing out what works for me and how I try to keep up with the multitudes of "must haves".
