For all Smallville fans, according to 'thedigitalbits' website, a tentative release date of 3/18/03 has been announced for Smallville: The Complete First Season

Some unfortunate news, culled from Kryptonsite.com:

DVD Rumor: Bogus!
The "Rumor Mill" at DigitalBits.com reveals that several DVD-selling outlets have been informed that the street date for the complete first season of Smallville on DVD is set to be released on March 18, 2003; however, unfortunately, we have been told by very reliable sources it's definitely not true that a full-season DVD will be arriving in North America that soon, "maybe next year or the year after, but right now it doesn't appear to be happening."

Apparently some retail outlets were given this misinformation. Of course, keep watching KryptonSite and hopefully one of these days we'll have good news regarding a DVD release for the series.

Well my mom will be glad to hear of it. Just got a new TV and a dvd player for the living room. Awesome series and can't wait to see it.

According to thedigitalbits.com, this is only being released in the R2 region.

I heard it the first season was not going to be released in the U.S. because of syndication obligations.

I have heard that several more episodes will be released in Canada

I just got the Smallville pilot DVD yesterday. What a great disc! This is one of my favorite shows, I really hope this gets released in season sets. If not, at least Canada is R1, and they are pretty easy to get online....

The WB does not control what gets released to home video. 7th Heaven is property of Spelling Entertainment, and they alone control when any home video is released. Smallville is the property of Warner Bros, so Warner controls its home video release. Smallville is one of only a handful of WB shows that is actually produced by Warner Bros. Most are produced by other production companies (Angel is Fox, and Dawson's Creek is Columbia / Tri-Star, for instance).

Dehrian is right in what he said, but another thing to look at (aside from property control) is that 7th Heaven is no longer in the No. 1 slot on the WB. Smallville passed it up in its first season, I believe. This fact probably gave Warners the confidence to release it on DVD knowing that it had an immediate audience.

If Smallville does well on DVD, I wouldn't be surprised at all to hear an announcement for 7th Heaven season sets in the coming year.
