Extended Schindler's List DVD

This was taken from DavisDVD.com

While promoting Catch Me If You Can on "The Today Show," director Steven Spielberg touched upon deleted scenes and a couple of his upcoming special edition DVDs. There is about 1 hour of deleted scenes from Schindler's List and 35 minutes from Catch Me If You Can that he plans putting on respective discs. I've also heard from some sources that, if not presented separately, Spielberg may reinstate the deleted footage back into the body of Schindler's List.

What are your thoughts about the new tidbits form Mr. Spielberg (if these are true)

If true i can't wait to own both dvd's.

I think that would be incredible to see it reinserted. But once again, I would like the original theatrical version of Schindler's List on DVD as well. That is the version that won Best Picture and the version we all remember.

Again, deleted scenes are a shaky subject. Sometimes they are great, but sometimes they are better left on the editing room floor.

I prefer to have deleted scenes in their own section so we can view the movies that we love in the original form in which we fell in love with them in the 1st place.
And let's face it: some deleted scenes are real snoozefests.

I'd like access to both cuts. I think LOTR did a great thing by releasing the theatrical first on a low-priced 2 disc set and then the mad love on the four disc with no duplicate extras...but Peter Jackson LOVES US...and Steven don't.

Instead of debating theatrical or extended, did we forget about seamless branching?

Judge him not too harshly...he did ensure that the original version of E.T. would be on the 2-disc DVD.

I believe Schindler's List is still Spielberg's most personal project, and I'm sure he'll make sure it's treated properly. I hope that whatever happens, the original version will be available. I don't imagine there's too much room for CGI enhancements, here; I would think it would be more of a Close Encounters-type situation. Of course, the original version Close Encounters, didn't really represent Spielberg's original wishes, even for the time it was released. I think with Schindler, he was able to do what he wanted. If he wants to make a longer version, great, but I hope the original is preserved as well.

I may not agree with all of Spielberg's decisions, but you can't say he doesn't respect his fans.

Maybe they should finish "Flintstone's List" (from Clerks: TAS) and include it before the movie....

I'm sure that'll happen just as soon as Columbia Tri-Star gives Criterion the rights to do a seemless branching original/special edition Close Encounters DVD for the purists.

I'm all for an extended List.

I didn't feel the original-length film felt like three hours at all, and it seems that any extra footage could only add to the power of the events that the story preserved.

They could do a really nice 4/5 disc set, with the theatrical cut on disc one, an extended one on 2 and 3, supplemental features on disc 4, and perhaps the CD soundtrack as disc 5?

Anyway, it's got to come out this year - 2003 is the 10th Anniversary.

The original theatrical version is long enough! I'm all for actually having time to watch movies. So, I hope they use a seperate section or seamless branching (why don't more discs use this!?!).

I saw this interview on the Today Show. The way I interpreted what Mr. S said was that he has over an hour of deleted scenes from SL on a disc in his home that no one will ever see. It's in his own private collection.

That's just the way I understood it...

It'd be best if we could get both versions ala E.T. but I'll honestly take whichever we get. I just want this on DVD finally.

Schindler deserves all the time and discs that Speil wants to give it. this movie is the only film left from the last decade that we really need on dvd. I'll take whatever speil wants to give us and I'll gladly pay whatever he wants.

If we're really lucky we'll get a 5 disc extravaganza - let it be so and make 2003 the year of the dvd fight between 2 towers and schindler - I know SL will be purchased first by me although I'll get whatever installment plan system jackson uses to release LOTR.

It's pretty much a sure thing that Jackson's release schedule for the 2 remaining Lord of the Rings films will follow Fellowship...

September 2003 - The Two Towers theatrical cut (2hrs 59min) 2DVD
November 2003 - The Two Towers extended cut (3hrs 30min) 4DVD

September 2004 - Return of the King theatrical cut (3hrs 30min) 2DVD
November 2004 - Return of the King extended cut (4hrs) 4DVD

Actually, since WETA won't be juggling between doing FX for the extended cut and another film, we might see the extended cut earlier.

I wonder if we'll see a teaser trailer for The Hobbit on the RotK extended cut.

Yes, quite a few: cynical, pessimistic, anhedonistic, and neurotic. I didn't really think that post was too negative; personally I really enjoyed the film but don't need an extra hour that might ruin it.

I didn't derail. All I said was that I preferred seamless branching! I'll try and post nicer. Sorry.

I've been waiting for this thing FOREVER. Personally I would love the scenes reintegrated, but I think he should be fair to all fans and give both versions. Kinda like the Lucas debacle all over again if he only distributes the "new" vision. In this case personally, though, I'll buy it regardless.

Joe, SilentBob asked for our thoughts on the extras, not just the positive ones.

If you were warning him for other behaviors as well, cool. But you made it seem like you were pointing out this one post. Mentioning Banning over *this* (reads again)? He's stating it's long enough and asks about seamless branching! I'm sure he got the "hint" loud and clear. I'm not trying to speak ill in any other way than this issue (maybe you're having a bad day, heh), but c'mon, man, let's not get postal LOL (apologies to others for not taking it to pm because this whole thing was silly, but when you make it public...I certainly would have been humiliated if you said as much to me over something like this, and thought he deserved at least one voice of defense)

I had my reasons for posting that and Snake understands that I did it for his benefit.
It should have not been posted here, however.

Yes that is what I was doing. I like SSA and I think he is a valuable contributor to the forum.
My post was only meant as a wake up not that he was really going to be banned.
In my years of doing this I have only been behind the banning of 3 members because I think it has to be pretty severe to actually ban someone.
I love the forum and I try to do what is necessary to make it a good place for all of us to enjoy even though I may overstep my bounds.

I am beginning to feel the same way about this as I feel about all the other movies that Spielberg has his hands in. I'm just starting not to care. It's going to come out and probably be a big dissapointment which will be really bad. Hopefully the can do this one right (one of the bad ones would be Jaws with the cut documentary). There is so much that can be done with this disc that if there isn't tons on it it will be terrible since they have had soooooooo long to do things for it.
