Some hope for "Freaks and Geeks" on DVD

Certainly nothing close to concrete, but any news is good news, especially when it comes from the mouth of the show's creator Judd Apatow: http://fng.netfaction.com/main.taf?f...=1&msgid=65639

We are close to figuring out how to get the DVD of Freaks and Geeks out some time next year. It would help if I could put together a mailing list of everyone who wanted the DVD so they (Dreamworks Video) could see the level of interest and have a way to contact everyone when it is released
credit to a DVD Talk thread: http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hreadid=261215 for the initial heads up.

This is one of my alltime favourite shows. A truly creative masterpeice of television comedy/ drama.
A dream DVD for me.

This TV show deserves a dvd release, as it was one of my favorite shows next to Family Guy. It tends to pop up on Fox Family once in a while. I am glad howver to see that most of the cast is still getting work here and there on prime time.

Actually, some of the cast has been getting regular feature film work!
James Franco most popularly played Harry Osborne in Spider-Man. He also won awards for his portrayal of James Dean.

Linda C. played Velma in Scooby-Doo. Hopefully she'll get some better work considering how incrdibly talented she is.

Along with Apatow's "Undeclared", this show remains a true gem that got unjustly cancelled.

I haven't gotten to see much of "Freaks and Geeks" at all, but I love "Undeclared", so this is great news for me! Thanks Marq.

Freaks and Geeks was one of the best shows ever. I never missed an episode and was pissed when they cancelled it. I really hope they put it on DVD.

Every year, the Museum of TV and Radio in Beverly Hills has a series where the cast and crew of certain current shows sit on a panel and discuss their show, screen an episode, then do a Q and A with their fans. I was lucky enough to attend both the "Freaks and Geeks" seminar during its initial run, and a subsequent event where, after the show was canceled, the cast and crew returned to the museum to screen the then-unaired episodes. It was great to see the appreciation Judd Apatow, Paul Feig (sp?), Jake Kasdan, and the entire cast had for their fans. I've attended many of these programs, but no series had a better-grounded, more gracious, and more accessible cast and crew. (By contrast, the smarmiest, most arrogant bunch was from "Dark Angel," though to be fair to the cast, the high number of weirdos hassling Jessica Alba during the Q&A could have been the reason for their off-putting attitude.)

"Freaks and Geeks" was obviously a labor of love for all concerned, and every member of the cast, most of them still enjoying their first big break, came off as genuine and clearly relished the experience of being on a show that meant so much to so many people. The following year, Apatow, Kasdan, and about half the cast of "Freaks" returned to do a seminar for about-to-be-canceled "Undeclared," and displayed the same enthusiasm and graciousness. In a way, the shows' brief runs make them seem all the more perfect, as they never rambled on to become irrelevant as so many sitcoms do that overstay their welcome. Both shows were of a level of quality rarely seen in TV, and more specifically TV comedy, and it would be great to have "Freaks and Geeks" on DVD.

I thought the whole music rights issue had killed the DVD project, but never say die...

I would really like to replace my VHS tapes of the show (only twelve of the eighteen episodes, sadly) with spiffy DVDs. Freaks and Geeks was one of the best series I've ever seen. Period.

If unholy drekk like Mad About You and Battlestar Galactica can be considered for DVD release, why not TV series that actually engage the ol' noggin? (plus depictions of early-80s is retro cool! )

Where do I sign to show support for a DVD release?

I think it's amazing that a show can get this big. It has such a strong fan base! I can't imagine why it hasn't come out, even if music rights are a problem, I'm sure they would make more then their money back if they released it. I for one have yet to see it but I know I would pick it up just to see what everyone is talking about.

GREAT story Lex!
Reading and seeing interviews with the cast and creative people behind those 2 shows, I assumed they were all great individuals. Your recollection solidified it.

Yet another reason for me to envy your L.A. priviledges....

I have four vhs tapes worth of Freak and Geeks, I'm missing about 2. My favorite is got to be the Halloween episode.

"You look like the friggin' tin man"

What really attracted me to the show was the fact that it wasn't this whole throwback to the 80's as a whole decade, as a lot of shows do, with their, "let's wear leg warmers and listen to Boy George", which is just not the case with most people. The show really focused on the era of the 1978-1982, which really was a groundbreaking time for popular culture. Rock bands still ruled, rap music was underground and considered a novelty by some,
and pre-teens like myself at the time had sleepovers and stayed up to watch Eddie Murphy do Buckwheat and Gumby on Saturday Night Live.

"Freaks & Geeks"

"Freaks & Geeks" was an absolute classic, and should definitely have a DVD release. I was 12 in 1980, so obviously there's some nostalgia there for me, but the show was so well-made that just about anyone could thoroughly enjoy it.
