I wanna buy The Remastered Kubrick Collection

Ok kids, I am a huge fan of Stanley Kubrick and every movie in that box set is great except I havent seen Lolita yet. So I was curious if it was a good buy. Because from what I hear and read there are zero special features other than "A life in pictures". I mean I could seriously care less about transfer, but I just want to know if this is an official buy for any Kubrick fan.

I myself have been patiently waiting for them to release "Full Metal Jacket" in a Widescreen Format. I absolutely refuse to watch this movie in a Pan & Scan version..which is the only way it's available.

You're a Kubrick fan, you know that you like all of the films, except one that you haven't seen. Why is there any question?

I know that The Shining has a documentary, I'm not sure how long it is, and Dr Strangelove has a few interviews and one or two short featurettes. I don't think the other discs have anything.

I really want to get this set as well.

Full Metal Jacket is open-matted. It is not pan and scanned.

Lolita is an amazing film, way better than the 90s version, which is one of the worst films ever. I highly recommeded getting Lolita, and the whole box is worth it for the documentary and the case. Plus, it is cheaper than buying them all seperate.

Um... isn't it open matte, and the way Kubrick wanted it to be seen on video? I think you're going to be waiting for quite a while.

I'm still a bit unclear on the Kubrick aspect ratio stuff.

It's an essential buy for any Kubrick fan...

The Shining DVD has a 35 min. making of (from Kubrick's daughter Vivien), which is THE best behind the scenes stuff ever put on DVD. So there you go...

As far as I know Full Metal Jacket is open matte, check out the headrooms in this transfer.

Here's an example (with 1.85 lines):

When I read that FMJ was pan & Scan I was gonna quit the set. But its open-matte so I figure I might as well pick it up. I was on IMDB today reading up on 'Lolita' and it does sound to be a great film indeed. So I suppose the lack of extras wont bug me at all, and SolidSnake was right about the price being good. So owning the set is a must, now off to Best Buy! err, the bank!

This set is well worth the money.

If you can find it used, even better.

The original version of Lolita (1962) is way better than the remake (1997) with Jeremy Irons, though in the remake Irons does a great job of playing Humbert.

But back to the box set, look what you get:

The Shining
2001: A Space Odyssey
Dr. Strangelove
A Clockwork Orange
Full Metal Jacket
Barry Lyndon
Lolita
Eyes Wide Shut

Plus A Life in Pictures (soon to be available solo according to Amazon.com)

Of course I'd like the un-edited (or un obstructed I should say) version of Eyes Wide Shut but that movie is a mind twister.

About the way this set could be made better is to include Spartacus with it...

Hell yes with the uncut version! I picked it up and am very happy, in fact 2001 is playing behind me. Anywho, Spartacus would of been a nice addition. But hey, great set.

no way on spartacus

If Spartacus were to be included in that set, Kubrick would roll over in his grave. That's one movie he disowned, pretty much because he wasnt the full creative force behind it, sort of a "hired gun" if you will.

If you can still find it, pick up The Killing too. Really neat story, really well executed, think Soderburgh's Ocean's Eleven without all the glitz.

"The Killing" is my favorite Kubrick film. Maybe not his most accomplished technology-wise, but damn doogity that's a fun movie to watch.

Get it! It's the pride of my collection. The Dr. Strangelove features are really excellent, including a preview for another film that is amazingly weird. But I wanted to be sure this was noted : the Making of The Shining is quite an amazing feature by itself, and it comes with a Director's commentary track by Vivian Kubrick (Stanley's daughter.) It's very forthright and really fascinating material for a Kubrick fan.

I agree with comments about what else could have been included - and I still need to pick up The Killing - but what you get in the box set is worth its high price.

Zbogom.

This set is worth getting. I have both sets and new one is definitely much better. Since I was able to find a copy of the older 2001 with the Arthur C. Clarke interview I'll probably try to get rid of my old set.

Full Metal Jacket is presented open-matt. If you want to see it in 'wide-screen' mask off your monitor with cardboard to the proper aspect ratio (1.85:1??).

The only Kubrick films I'm not enthusiastic about are Full Metal Jacket and Dr. Strangelove. I will say however, that I consider all the movies besides those two in the collection 5-stars, including Lolita.

BUY IT, BUY IT, BUY IT!!!!!

I can't stress this enough. This is the crown jewel of my collection!

Don't worry about Lolita, if you're a Kubrick fan you'll love it.

Don't worry about the lack of extras - The Shining documentary is excellent, Strangelove is pretty loaded, and A Life In Pictures more than makes up for the lack of any other extras.

Plus, if you're only familiar with the old, 80's and early 90's laserdisc transfers of these films, then you're in for a real treat! The Shining especially looks beautiful - like it was made just a couple of years ago.

Unfortunately, this doesn't contain all of Kubrick's wonderful films, but you can easily pick up The Killing, Paths Of Glory, and the expensive-but-well-worth-it Criterion Collection edition of Spartacus. I'm not entirely sure if Killer's Kiss is available on DVD as I still own it on laser, but I'm sure someone here can fill us in on that.

Killer's Kiss

MGM released this too, i believe its OOP now, but i picked it up for like $12 at Suncoast. Decent film, not as good as The Killing however, but there are some neat elements to it.

I really love this set, too. I do wish that The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, and Eyes Wide Shut were offered in matted versions as well, but since Kubrick approved of the 4:3 ratios, then I'm okay with it.

Other than that, though, the set is great. A Life in Pictures is terrific, although as Flash pointed out, it may be available alone soon.

And Bowman is right: the films look great (except for Strangelove; that could've used some work). The Shining looks better than Eyes Wide Shut. For Kubrick fans, it's worth it.

He did practically disown it, until he participated in it's 1991 restoration. I'm sure he still didn't love it, but he did go as far as to say that it "wasn't as bad as he'd thought."

At any rate, Criterion did a very good 2-disc port of their laserdisc set of Spartacus a couple of years ago, complete with a fantastic new transfer. If you can find that, it's worth it, too. And regardless of how Kubrick felt about it, I still think it's a great film.

Why not just buy the Criterion DVD of it?

Kubrick wasn't alive to approve the 4:3 transfer of EYES WIDE SHUT which, contrary to popular belief, contains at least some pan & scan moments.

Sorry; guess I should have been more specific:

"2-disc port of their laserdisc set" = "DVD"

And I think there are a few things on there that weren't on the LD. Anyway, it's a great release.

Can you say where? I would like to compare it with my RC 2 version.

I haven't looked into other scenes, but the mirror scene between Cruise and Kidman is definitely pan and scan on both the R1 and R2 DVDs. They've taken the 1.78:1 matted cinema framing and then cropped the sides to make it 1.33:1. If you look around the net, you'll find the 'show-west' preview which features this shot in its original, open-matte 1.33:1 form.

Interesting. But why would they do that? Warner is so keen about presenting Kubrick's films in his desired AR. Maybe some Kubrick aide (Vitali?) knew that Kubrick wanted a tighter framing in those scenes and "corrected" those shots for home video?
