Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes

It looks to me like only four of the Sherlock Holmes movies starring Basil Rathbone are out on DVD. They are: Dressed To Kill, Sherlock Holmes And The Secret Weapon, Terror By Night and The Woman In Green. I would buy all of this series (14 movies, I think), if the DVDs were half way decent.

Does anyone own any of the four that are currently out? If so, how are they? (It looks like some of them have been put out by more than one company.)

Has anyone read anything about the release of any more of these movies on DVD? If so, please give the what and when.

Thanks.

Sherlock Holmes DVD

I have 3 of those movies on DVD but I'm sure the last one is the same quality. The quality isn't horrible but it's not great either. They're not remastered or anything but they're perfectly acceptable. I haven't heard anything about more Basil Rathbone Holmes DVD's coming out. Alot of the Jeremy Brett Holmes movies are being released this year. Check amazon.com for dates.

Thanks for the information. I will probably buy the four that are available. That should be enough to guarantee that a boxed set of the entire series will be released later in the year.

It may depend on who owns the rights. Rathbones first two (and best, IMO), The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes were made by Fox, while Universal made the "modern" dozen films that took Holmes out of Victorian/Edwardian Engalnd and transplanted him into WWII.

Looks like The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes & The Hound Of The Baskervilles will finally be hitting DVD on 4/27/04. This is great news as these are the best of the Rathbone/Bruce flicks.

At Ventura Distribution, we've handled a lot of Sherlock Holmes product. A search on our website for "Rathbone" returned 17 Sherlock Holmes titles. They are:
Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
Sherlock Holmes and the House of Fear
Sherlock Holmes and the Pearl of Death
Sherlock Holmes and the Scarlet Claw
Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon
Sherlock Holmes and the Spider Woman
Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror
Sherlock Holmes Faces Death
Sherlock Holmes in Washington
Sherlock Holmes: Dressed to Kill
Sherlock Holmes in Pursuit to Algiers
Sherlock Holmes: Terror by Night
Sherlock Holmes: The Hound of Baskervilles
Sherlock Holmes: The Woman in Green
Sherlock Holmes Collections 1-3

Some of these haven't streeted yet, but you should be able to find them all at any e-tailer. Can't guarantee brick and mortar stores however. Hope this helped out!

Thanks

Thanks, dvdjedi, for the information about the two 1939 movies. I had previously ordered and received collections 1, 2 & 3 or the Rathbone Holmes movies, and I just ordered these two, so my collection will soon be complete.

I was so glad to hear that The Hound of the Baskervilles was gonna be coming out. That is by far my favorite Sherlock Holmes movie...and the Rathbone version is the best one.
