Back to the Future DVD Update

Any info on the replacement widescreen discs? i.e. has universal put corected dvd's on the shelves, and if so, how can you tell them apart from the bad ones?

I was just watching the BTTF discs last night and actually read the following excerpt on dvdtown.com today. I don't think after reading this if its worth it to send them all back and wait, etc. We'll see.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Official statement on technical framing issue on the Back to the Future Trilogy

Below is a statement from Universal Studios Home Video regarding the "Back to the Future Trilogy."

Universal Studios Home Video is aware of a minor technical framing issue on the "Back to the Future Trilogy" widescreen DVDs. The framing appears differently from the laserdisc releases for approximately two minutes during "Back to the Future II" and four minutes during "Back to the Future III." The framing difference is unnoticeable to widescreen DVD viewers and does not detract from or interrupt the viewing experience. Consumers with further questions can call (888) 703-0010.

Welp, even though the mis-framing is indeed noticeable(sp?) in BTTF 2 and 3, I have thought about it long and hard and I have decided not to send them in.

Point said, I can live with the current dvds now, and besides, the BTTF trilogy is finally on dvd as of this past Dec. 17th and I doubt I could have waited a while longer for these movies to street.

I'll lose no sleep over the situation to be perfectly honest.

I think I'll wait another few months before I pick mine up. Will the scan numbers be different for the corrected set, ya think?

I personally have not seen a problem. Can anyone tell me exactly where the problem occurs?

So far, I'm happy with what I've got.

Thanks
I really was too lazy to dig through that, and when I finally did, I only saw one example, and I've watched the movie a couple of times, and I never noticed it.

What I want to know is "who finds these things?" Do people comapare every DVD to all earlier releases? Was it someone at HTF who first found this

I shipped mine back Tuesday. Even though they are now providing prepaid mailers to send them back if they get lost in the mail you have no proof that you actually sent them. You can't put delivery confirmation or insurance on a prepaid mailer. I sent them back 1st class with delivery confirmation (only set me back $1.61). I waited this long for BTTF & I'll be damned if I'm not going to get the best possible copies of all 3 movies. I can live without 'em for a month.

I'd like to know too. I'm sending the "bad" discs in CD cases hopefully they'll send the good DVDs to me in them.

Anyone know what us international customers who bought these on Amazon or UK import retailers can do about this?

I'd like the fixed discs. Any news on what to do?

I will also be sending mine in for replacements. Minor as the flaws may be, they are still flaws, and with as much time as was allowed for this release, there is no excuse for their being there. The same problems were found in discs from the other regions before they were released here, and they still were not fixed. And, had I not known about this, it's probable I wouldn't have noticed, but since I do know, it is very noticeable.

Beyond the framing problems, though, I want to know if the audio problems with #2 have been fixed. This is only in a couple of places, but it is very noticeable, even on mere TV speakers.

At any rate, we may be overreacting about minor problems, but the point is that they shouldn't be there. And since Universal is offering to replace them, I will take them up on it.

I sent mine back with no cases (& the card with my name, address & disc problem-LIKE THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS) just as I did when I sent back the Spy Game discs with the forced subtitles. Universal then (& I assume now) shipped the corrected discs back in clear cd cases.

The remastered versions will also have widescreen trailers instead of full screen............
can I apply for the newly created job of Quality Assurence Checker that nobody at Universal had thought of having before....................................an unknown science to them obviously - checking the bleedin obvious................

The audio problem on Part II will be fixed according to Bob Gale. The trailers on the new discs will be in widescreen and the framing will be corrected. If you call (888) 703-0010 they will send you a prepaid mailer so it won't cost you any money. I think the woman who answered the phone when I called for the mailer said that an envelope would also be included. Since the discs you return will be destroyed there's no need to protect them when you send them in. Just throw them in the envelope, it doesn't matter if they get scratched all to hell. Universal hasn't yet decided as to how to differentiate the corrected discs on store shelves but as soon as the corrected versions are made available they WILL be the ones in the newly-pressed copies of the movie. I personally can't understand why anybody would want to keep their misframed versions when the replacent process is ABSOLUTELY free (free shipping, free envelope, toll-free phone number) when that version has the poor audio and an modified aspect ratio, which is just as bad as a fullscreen copy. I'll be sending mine in as soon as I get the prepaid mailer.

Thank you GuruAskew for the information. Just called to get my return envelope and will send them as soon as I get it. They gave me the speech:

BTW the operator asked me to spell BestBuy.

I talked to 2 different operators & neither could pronounce the word Trilogy.

Listening to them butcher the English language is like listening to "Jar Jar" Bush give a speech about the nuclear (or should I say "nucular") threat.

DON'T count on it. I called on January 21st & still haven't gotten mine. Luckily after the vibe I got from the illiterate operator I mailed it the same day 1st class in a padded mailer with delivery confirmation which only cost $1.61 (& I have the proof that it was delivered to them on January 24th which you cannot get with a prepaid mailer, even if they send it).

BTW the Bush comment was not meant to be seen. It was supposed to be subliminable.

That's subliminal, big guy. Don't knock your own kind.

Good luck, everyone, on getting your BTTF replacement discs. I'd just assume keeping them, rather than risking them getting lost in mail purgatory. Then again, I also failed to replace my Jurassic Park: DTS disc. I must be afraid of letting go or something.
