THE LION KING October 7th (Specs & Cover Art Now Added on Page 2)

Edit: Specs and cover art have been released and are in the first post on page two courtesy UltimateDisney.com.

Disney is rolling out the Platinum Edition DVD release of THE LION KING on October 7th, and although there's no official press release or specs yet available, it's already worth getting excited about. It's The Lion King, for crying out loud! Check out the teaser site and trailer here.

As earlier rumored, the DVD will feature a Special Edition cut of the film with the new song "Morning Report" from the Broadway show. I have no clue how Disney will work this in without performing a severe edit to the exsisting pouncing sequence, but let's just hope we get the it - and the original theatrical version too, especially - in 1.66:1 anamorphic widescreen OAR.

With the site launched and trailers already popping up on disc (101 Dalmatians II, anyone?), I'd expect an official press announcement any day now with specs and special features listed. It wouldn't hurt to formally announce Sleeping Beauty and 200,000 Leagues Under the Sea at the same time, either.

But how will they add a new song to the movie? Who sings? I'm sure the acotr who was the singing voice of Simba has long since gone through puberty!

Also note the fact that it says Special Edition, rather than Platinum Edition. I believe Beauty and the Beast DVD did the same, where it would say both Platinum and Special Edition on the cover. There was some worry that Disney dropped the Platinum lineup, but I'm sure it's nothing to worry about.

Aladdin was originally intended as the 2003 Platinum Edition but Disney pulled the old switcheroo because they wanted to test the IMAX format with their most successful film after only lukewarm returns from the Beauty and the Beast IMAX run; JimHillMiedia.com's archives should give you a more fleshed-out explination.

I'm not sure who will sing Morning Report; it's mainly Zazu but does feature Simba. Then again, they could possibly just intercut the Zazu material around the exsisting dialogue and be fine, AND not mess up the exsisting scene.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that Disney's Aladdin is scheduled to be released next Christmas, with the DVD to follow a year later, similar to what Disney did with The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast.

I guess "Platinum Edition" refers to the DVD release format, whereas "Special Edition" (also known as "Special IMAX edition") refers to the cut of the movie that is on the DVD.

So BatB is the Special Edition Cut on a Platinum Edition DVD. Same thing with the Lion King, probably.

The version that's currently being shown in IMAX theaters already has the "morning report" segment in it?

I just hope they will include the theatrical version as well. Especially since I didn't really like the Broadway musical of LK, except two of the new songs. Morning Report is not one of them. The Broadway musical of BatB is great though.

And this time there is no work-in-progress-version that also has to be included, so they should be able to fit both versions on the DVD without the low data rate problem they had on the BatB DVD.

Malte.

No, it doesn't. The IMAX cut is very close to the theatrical cut, though, and I assume that it will be labelled as the "theatrical cut" for the DVD even though it's not.

You're not wrong.

Except perhaps about "Christmas". It might not be Dec. 25th, but if not it will be close after.

But Aladdin: Special Edition is definately coming to IMAX/big picture format late this year.

The DVD release of Aladdin: Special Edition - Platinum Edition is already set for Oct. 5, 2004. I can't wait!...this was the very first store-bought VHS I ever bought from Disney. I'm not kidding!

I hope that we'll also get Return of Jafar and King of Thieves on DVD at the same time. Both sequels don't measure up to the original, but are entertaining in their own ways (once you get past the disappointment on RoJ about the absence of Robin Williams).

You're right Unicorn, I should have said Christmastime. Beauty and the Beast was on New Year's Day I think, as was Fantasia 2000 the year before if memory serves.

No, it's coming to IMAX theaters around Christmas, it won't hit DVD until October 5, 2004.

But it will be a "Platinum Edition", or at least the new cut of the film will be.

"Things that make you go 'Hmmmmm'": I wonder how well Aladdin will go over if we go to war in the Middle East. I wonder if Disney would decide to delay it further if that happens.

Anyway, Disney is starting to promote Lion King. This is one of over two dozen images they released yesterday, about six of them with the "first time ever on DVD" wording (the rest just straight film frames):

They had better not delay it any further than 2004, no matter weather we we go to war. Aladdin is my favorite film of all time, and my VHS recently broke, so I have to wait for the DVD to own it again. I don't want to wait too long.

However, on the plus side, if they did that we'd get Bambi bumped up a year from its current October 2005 date. Still, I'd rather have Aladdin next year. (Well, I'd RATHER have all 7 remaining Platinums next year, but that's not going to happen either.)

I thought you said it was Beauty and the Beast? Anywho, sounds like great news from Disney. My only concern is that they dont take out their little sexual mishaps from both Lion King and Aladdin.
Ahh, Disney. Perverts who make kids movies...

I believe they already took the "SFX" which looked like "SEX" out of the Lion King for the Imax release, which means that it most likely won't be on the dvd either.

The Lion King this year then Aladdin the next, now if only they could push up The Little Mermaid's release.

Funny!!!!

I want Sleeping Beauy the most out of all of them! Maybe they will change the release dates for the others and release two in one year. Lion King + Aladdin.

Well, I am wishing....I am wishing....someday...

But Sleeping Beauty isn't a Plantinum Edition (and it's coming out in May or 3rd Quarter or something).

The Platinum Editions are (in no particular order):

Snow White
Beauty and the Beast
The Lion King
Aladdin
Bambi
Cinderelli
Little Mermaid
The Jungle Book
Lady and the Tramp
101 Dalmatians

I just hope that they put Cinderelli & Bambi out before they redo Little Mermaid, Jungle Book, Lady and the Tramp and 101 Dalmatians.

I would like to have _some_ copy of all of them on DVD before redoing those as special editions.

And, they can release The Rescuers to Region 1 any ol' time they feel like it :rar:

Anybody want them to put "Why Me?" back into Aladdin for it's special edition?

If they wanted to, they could really make an exellent special edition out of Aladdin.

Why Me? and/or Humiliate the Boy would be great in there; there was also a song for Jasmine originally, I think it was called "To Be A Princess" or something to the effect, that could do well put in. And Alan Menken recently wrote a completely new song "To Be Free" for the stage show adaptation Aladdin - A Musical Spectacular at Disney's Calafornia Adventure themepark which would be nice.

Of course, I also must have the original version too (since that is the version that made it my favorite movie of all-time.) No, while Beauty is an exellent film and very close, it was never Beauty and the Beast; always Aladdin.

I could be wrong (it happens) but I thought that The Lion King's OAR was 1.85:1. On LD it looks wider than Aladdin, Beauty, and Little Mermaid.

Speaking of Aladdin, I wonder if they'll keep that bad PC video overdub from the opening song to remove the phrase "where they cut off your ear if they don't like your face." Then again, I probably don't have to wonder.

Remember the scene where Genie is a bumblebee and Aladdin falls off the balcony onto Magic Carpet. Well before all that Rajah the Tiger tries to scare Aladdin and when he takes off his hat and backs away he whispers "Take off your clothes".

Sweet.

I've heard it myself.

When Aladdin is being growled at by the tiger Rahjah and is saying "Good kitty," you can hear someone whisper something like... Aladdin: "Good..." Low voice: "...children take of your clothes," or "...teenagers take off your clothes," or just "take of your clothes." I've heard all three different things but I can't tell what is actually said at the beginning of the whisper.

But what is The Lion King one?

And is it true what they say about the top of the castle in The Little Mermaid?
