Amityville 2
At the mention of Peter's page today...I mosied on over to that Amityville site.
At the total risk of being flamed to fuckin oblivion, I gotta say, I hope Amityville 2 (1982) gets released to DVD soon by MGM. For those that don't know, this prequel is from true American horror, and should've been the first film, since it is the prequel: in Nov of 1974 3:15am the eldest son, Ronald DeFeo, shot and killed his 4(!) other brothers and sisters, plus his mother & father with a rifle. (DeFeo is currently in prison for life.) Then the following year another family, the Lutzs, moved in, stayed for allegedly 28 days and completely left the house claiming supernatural horror drove them out. This second family's, the Lutzs, stories have been very controversial and mostly believed to be a hoax (but would you want to stay in that house by yourself one night?...well, apparently the people that live ther now say everything is hunky-dory). But the previous family's murder happened. Period. Anyway, Amityville 2's first 3/4 is genuinely creepy. The boasting, colonial house looks a bit worn. Scenes are dank, grimy, and the house's interior shots feel worn. And that damned cellar. The most creepy music. The son's relationship with his father is tangibly strained, and the family is repetitively on the verge of falling apart. Demonic voices are kept to a minimum and used at odd times...demonic...hmm. Then the film ends with intensive, Hollywood-style posession/ exorcism activities that many compare with damnation to the Exorcist - and rightly so. However, that actor that played the kid while posessed was haulting-even if the story by this point wasn't. I think it would've been more interesting if the story tried to dig up as much info as possible on Ronald's genuine motivation - I mean, that's what everyone wants to know! The reality seems to point that he was a major drug addict, & knowlegeably aware of a new life insurance his father had taken out. <-- still, is that an easy explaination to swallow? The biggest thing that I can never figure out with this WHOLE Amityville mess, is that WHY were all family members found in their bed's, dead. And, reportedly, there was no signs of dragging or drugs used in the bodies. If a rifle were going off in your house, would you stay asleep/ and or in bed? Bring it on DVD MGM!
