Could it be "The Best Years of Our Lives"?

The actor (I can't remember his name) didn't have any hands, and won a best supporting actor Oscar for his portrayal of a person re-adjusting to live after the war.

Is this the movie?

Just watched this movie for the first time a few weeks ago. gotta say it was great. I was really surprised by the honest look at readjusting to civilian life so soon after the war. I thought all war movies of that era starred John Wayne propaganda style. Nicely done.
