400 Blows
Has anyone seen the new Fox Lorber release of 400 Blows? I love the film, and have the Criterion release, but am wondering if the new FL version has any improvements in either the video, audio, or supplemental department.

No (haven't seen the Fox Lorber disc), no (the Criterion edition is already the official 'digitally restored'[picture and sound] edition, check it out on your Criterion disc!), no (FL is [in]famous for bare-bones discs; e.g. my French Region 2 PAL DVD of "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg", which I bought last month, is anamorphic, FL's disc, which I bought last year, is not) and no (zilch supplements, unlike the Criterion disc).
Just enjoy your Criterion disc - the truth is that, short of a new anamorphic version (highly unlikely, except, maybe, someday, on a French Region 2 PAL disc), it's the best version you'll ever see!... ! ![This message has been edited by Hendrik (edited 10-12-1999).] |

I hate Fox Lorber more than anyone, having ruined more foreign films than any other company. But they seem to have turned some sort of corner, as their latest releases are all OAR.
The FL verison of 400 Blows is OAR 2.35 and has a commentary track from some critic or another. Considering the asking price for the CC version, I'd get the FL (although you already have the CC edition). |

"The FL verison of 400 Blows is OAR 2.35 [so is the Criterion edition!] and has a commentary track from some critic or another[so does the Criterion edition!]."
In that case, the FL disc is really just a retread of the Criterion... minus the short extra showing 'before and after' film restoration. No reason at all, then, to get the FL in addition to the Criterion... ! ! |

Thanks.
What about some of the other Truffaut films just being released by Fox Lorber, like The Last Metro or Jules and Jim? Anyone know if the other new Fox Lorber Truffaut's are even in the correct aspect ratio? [This message has been edited by Dehrian (edited 10-13-1999).] |

the commentary track on the FL 400 Blows is by a different person, but I've heard that it's a lot less interesting.
Shoot the Piano Player is in the original aspect ratio, and is not a bad transfer. Jules and Jim, it seems, has been indefinitely postponed. I'll wait until I have Jules and Jim before getting the others (I intend to get them one after the other, chronologically, as I work my way through his biography). I believe all of the Truffaut discs come with a bunch of trailers. The trailer for 400 blows on the FL disc is in fact a better transfer than that on the Criterion disc. As for Fox Lorber in general, they usually present the films in the original aspect ratios (Ran is a famous exception). They have zilch for extras, and the transfer/print qualities vary wildly. The FL discs that I have on me that have seen that have suffered greatly at the hands of FL include Diva, Tampopo, and Ran. My Life as a Dog, The Man Who Fell to Earth, Nostalghia, My Life to Live, Shoot the Piano Player, and Les Mistons, on the other hand, have fairly good transfers. On the one hand, I'm glad that Fox Lorber is putting out films that would otherwise have a hard time making it to DVD, but on the other hand, I'd rather have waited longer for Ran to come out, just to have a better transfer. That and I'm sure there are dozens of extras that films like Ran, Diva, Tampopo, My Life as a Dog, Irma Vep, etc. could benefit from. I wish that there were more Criterion's out there. Maybe then we would see Citizen Kane, My Life to Live, Akira, Blade Runner: SE, Ran: SE, etc. |

Warner is working on Citizen Kane. Have been for a long time. Don't know when it's coming out, though I can confirm that it is in the works. (Anyone in the company who actually reads their mail could tell you that.)
Thanks for the info on the FLs. I'll try a couple, just to see. I'm pissed myself that Jules and Jim is MIA. That was the one I was looking forward to the most. Oh well. |

region 2? those bastards. . .
I hope Warner does a very good job. I think that most of the people waiting for Citizen Kane are going to go over it with a fine tooth comb for quality, and are probably expecting at least some extras. |
