Blair Witch this Tuesday?

I just came back from the mall and I stopped in Suncoast Video for a second. They had their big BWP display up and I asked the salesgirl when it would be released. She said "Tuesday". I thought it was Friday? What about the Suncoast Video stores by you guys?
Anyone?

Because Tuesday is the normal release date for dvds, and Blair Witch is coming out next week, she probably answered Tuesday as a reflex. The idea of a movie coming out on a Friday would probably send her into a tailspin. But, it is still scheduled for Friday, the 22nd.

I was able to get this DVD early and took a look at it this evening and I think it's a really fine special edition. If anyone would like to take a look at my review, click on the link below. Enjoy!

No she is right. Blair Witch now has a soft street date on 10/19. Businesses aren't allowed to advertise it. I know this for a fatc because I saw the memo from Artisian about it. Be sure to check your local Musicland store tomorrow to pick it up.

There's no such thing as a 'soft' street date.
Anyone putting Blair Witch out for sale or rental on Tuesday is breaking street date.

I manage a small video store (not Blockbuster or Hollywood), and my corporate headquarters sent out a companywide email about Blair Witch.

For each store that violates street date, the company will be fined $125,000 (not a misprint).

Stores who put it out tomorrow do so at their own risk.

I checked my account with REEL.COM. Blair Witch is on backorder. So I cancelled it. LOL.

Welp, I found both BWP and Halloween H20 early at *K-MART* of all places.

BWP is a nice special edition, but I really found the "windowed" transfer to be a bit on the odd side. The director himself said he would have preferred a straight video transfer. The recovered footage is supposed to be on Hi-8 tapes, not 70's color film reels that those rounded edges make it look like.

We were joking about how on earth someone could complain about how BWP was transferred, but alas there definitely seems to be room for debate on this one.

Artisan clearly tried to reproduce the "theatrical experience" of seeing a misfit image rather than preserve the directors intentions of it actually being real, discovered footage. Big disappointment, for me.

Anybody know why the date for this one is a Friday instead of Tuesday like most others? And why was Tuesday chosen as the normal release day?

If stores are putting stuff out early, it could just be a case of poorly-trained staff. Street date is a stupid concept to begin with- the idea that a store can have merchandise they're not allowed to sell- so unless the stock people are specifically told, they might just stock the stuff as it arrives.

DVD Box Office have it listed for a 26th October release... A Canadian quirk perhaps?

Street Date is done so that stores have equal footing with each other for consumer dollars. As for poorly trained staff, ignorant is more like it. Every box that comes into the store I work for has a HUGE sticker over the box opening explicitly stating the release date.
Friday releases happen about once a year, and the only reason that I can think of is that the studio wants special attention for their title. Last year, Armageddon's video debut was a Friday, as well as ID4's release in 1996.

Guys, I just came back from my local Media Play here in Atlanta... they have the BWP DVDs out on the floor right NOW... TONS of them.

I didn't buy one, because I have a pre-order with REEL for a great price... but it was surprising to see them out so soon.

Oh, BTW Doc, when you make a pre-order with Reel, it will always show up as "Backordered" until it ships. It doesn't necessarily mean that there's going to be a delay in receiving it.

I am telling the truth. Artistian gave Musicland permission to start selling the Blair Witch Project on Tuesday. I read the memo that they sent us. They told us that we could not advertise it, but that we could sell it on Tuesday. We are really big on street dates at my store and we would not put out a movie early. Especially one as big as BWP. I can't speak for other Media Play stores, but we follow the rules when it comes to street dates. Also "soft" street dates do exist. The new Army of Darkness VHS is an example of one.

Thanks for letting me know about the "backorder" issue. I don't remember seeing that when I ordered The Mummy but oh well. The next one is Pinocchio for me. Until next time.......

Doc

P.S. That Documentary on the BWP was pretty cool. I heard that the VHS has a few extra deleted scenes. Please say it's not true. I don't want to have to buy the VHS tape.

I got mine today at a local best buy store...I did have to make the guy go in the back and get a copy... but it was worth it and they sold it to me no problems... Yes in the commentary they talk about some extra deleted scenes in the VHS copy!! But I think I will wait for the "Supposed" Directors cut that might come out this spring, according to the interview from dvdfile.com.. For now I have not watched the documentary but I am giong to soon, and the commentary was fun... although the style of film making is fascinating I was really hoping for a "real" behind the scenes type of thing....
