Well, you already have half again as many as you are considering. Why don't you just get all of them?

I've seen all of the ones on your list other than Closely Watched Trains. Like Welles and Ford Fan said, you should try to get them all eventually because they are all excellent. Kwaidan and Closely Watched Trains have the fewest extras. Kwaidan is quite beautiful to watch. Solaris and Rublev are probably the most "difficult". I would save them until you're really in the mood for a heavy film. Do the Right Thing, Sullivan's Travels, The Killers and Life and Death of Colonel Blimp are all very entertaining. In the Mood For Love is one of my personal favorites. It's one of the most beautiful films that I've ever seen. It forces you to pay very close attention to small details and it feels very intimate to me. If you haven't seen anything else by Godard, I would recommend starting with Band of Outsiders instead of Contempt. It's hard to explain, but Contempt deals with a lot of things that are related to Godard's marital with Anna Karina. She's in some of his earlier films and you would probably get more out of it if you had a little background with her. Last Temptation and Children of Paradise are very good too. COP is classic French cinema. Its hard to know quite what to say about all of these at once. I'll be glad to give more details about some specific titles. Ask and you shall receive

From reading reviews and recommendations on the DVD boards, I am thinking about making Closely Watched Trains a blind buy.

I am one of those nuts who purchase any DVD that has the Criterion logo on it. I ordered "Closely Watched Trains" when it came out and, for some reason, just wasn't too excited about seeing it. After putting it off for all that time I finally was in the mood to watch it last Friday. It is now one of my favorite films in my collection. I highly recommend it.

If you're going to buy one from your list, In the Mood for Love is an easy recommend.

These are the DVDs from your list that I own:

Life and Death of Colonel Blimp. That's a wonderful classic epic.
Sullivan's Travel - It's a fun film and it's not very long. Of course Veronica Lake looks great.

I've seen these at the cinema:

The last Temptation of Christ - It's an intriguing film. I would buy this eventually but it's heavy film and I haven't been in the mood to see it again just yet.

Do the Right Thing - I saw this in college and remember liking it but can't recall anything specific now.

Curious about your final choices. Goodluck with the decision.

Didn't see Brian De Palma's SISTERS on your list... definitely an essential Criterion.

If you enjoy suspense/horror films with Hitchcockian elements and sly humor, I highly reccommend this title. Bernard Herrmann's score is fantastic.

On the list you provided, I would choose:

Kwaidan
Children of Paradise
Sullivan's Travels

Can't comment on titles I haven't seen, though. Can't wait for "The Killers."

Might also want to check out "Cleo from 5 to 7," another unsung Criterion disk. No extras on the disk, unfortunately, just a beautiful and thought-provoking movie.

it's not on your list, but you should pick up the 2-disc set of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Fantastic set.

Another 'not on your list' recommendation...
While you have The Red Shoes and may get (albeit not on your list) Black Narcissus--you should definitely get Peeping Tom!!

I can vouch for the awesomeness of The Complete Monterey Pop Festival. If you're even remotely interested in great music, you can buy this one with confidence.

I haven't seen The Red Shoes, but both Black Narcissus and Peeping Tom are both terriffic...

Also think Picnic at Hanging Rock and The Last Wave are worth purchasing - they'll give your subwoofer a workout!

Andrei Rublev.
Nothing comes close. In The Mood For Love is also great; it's an excellent HK drama, and Criterion's presentation of it is astounding. The hard work they've put into it is worth the price alone. Excellent Kar-Wai Wong film.
