French Musicals
Can anyone suggest some French musicals for me to watch? I love every one that I've seen so far, but I don't know of very many. My favorites seem to be from the sixites or somehow related. Here are the ones that I've seen:
Umbrellas of Cherbourgh Young Girls of Rochefort 8 Women A Woman is a Woman Cleo from 5 to 7 (not a musical but I like the songs) Vagabond (same as Cleo) Any suggestions will be appreciated.

...if you're equipped to play Region 2 PAL DVDs, there's this highly successful (in France!) original French musical: Notre Dame de Paris (better known to English speakers as The Hunchback Of Notre Dame)... the disc features optional English subtitles...
...and since you enjoyed 8 Women (YEAH!) there's this movie in a similar vein (story with songs thrown in): Alain Resnais' On connaît la chanson (which also boasts a dts soundtrack!)... . . . . . .Last edited by Hendrik : 02-13-2003 at 11:10 AM. |

Le Million is delightful. It is available from Criterion.

I don't have region free/PAL capabilities (yet). I'll keep both of those in mind.
I already have and love Le Million. I can't believe I forgot to include it in my list! Thank you both for your suggestions.

There was another Michel Legrand musical done with Catherine Deneuve adn the same director (whose name i'm blanking on) after Cherbourg and The Young Women... based on the fairy tale Donkey Skin called Peau D'Ane. I don't think this ever even got an English subtitled release anywhere--I just remember it from a grade 7 class (I was in french immersion) where we watched it--ti was very strange--the fairytale itself is partly to blame with the donkey shitting gold, etc, but also had some things like a fairy in a helicopter. Anwyay I think it's considered a lesser Deneuve musical but I still have a couple of the songs often stuck in my head--I'd love to have the chance to see it again.
