DVD Aficianado Problems?

I try going to anyone's dvd collection at aficianado and it won't load. Eventually it says error. It won't even let me into my own collection. Is anyone else having these troubles?

I can't get into the site at all. I guess they're having technical issues.

Yeah, I update mine all the time, even though I don't get dvd's too often. I was wondering why the aficionado site was down....

Glad to hear its coming back. I really didn't want to switch over to dvd profiler. Although now that I downloaded the program it seems pretty cool. I just don't want to re enter everything.

I quit using DVD Profiler when they updated their software and I lost all my 'collection numbers' (ie: first purchased, second purchased.) Now I use DVD Af. for it's (very) easy use and I maintain my own simple text list with the order purchased.

This may already be know. However, in any case (for those who may not know) dvdaf.com is back up. Looks like we got it back a night early.

I decided to check it out and clinked on my dvdaf link in one of my post just to see if it was up, and I'll be damned, there it was.

Besides, I'm glad dvdaf is back up. I've wanted to look at my collection for some time now since I had found out it would be down till Weds, that and I need to update the list anyhow.

So I guess the dvdaf crew deserves a for getting the site up earlier than expected.

More problems...

Well, I guess something else is wrong now.

I noticed when clicking on people's collections in their signature, I get a "user not found" screen. And when I try to log into my own collection, it tells me it doesn't recognize the username/password combination.

I've certainly got bigger problems than this right now, but it's annoying all the same.

Not only is my collection gone but if you try to search for a title you get nothing. It looks like the only thing that works is the Main Page and Username unkown page. I sent them an e-mail and will post whatever response I get.

Wow.

I just started putting my collection in this week, and I chose Profiler over Aficionado because I liked the security of having everything on my HD, as well as on the web.

I sure hope they have that stuff backed up over a DVDA..

It was working OK last night, I had just gone there and swapped a bunch of titles out of Wish List to On Order.

Again with the

It's gonna suck if I have to put all my titles back in, but at least I have an Excel sheet that I carry around with me (handy PDA). Alas, my wish list isn't on the PDA.

I hope they get it back up, I just looked at dvdtracker.com and I didn't like it at all. I have a list on word but I would prefer an online system. I can't use profiler because you must download and I do most of this from work and they tend to get a bit anal about foriegn software on the computers.

Well, shit. My collection was all there just earlier this week, and now nada. User name is recognized, but diddly squat under my folders.

All those hours spent making comments and locating titles on my wish list - gone. Nice touch, eh? I doubt I can remember each and every title I had in my wish list. I can rebuild my existing collection just fine, though (although I'm hesitant to put in comments if this shit might happen again).

You know, an e-mail about this would have been appreciated! I guess they don't really want us to click on their sponsors' links and fund their operation, seeing as how they care little about customer service.

Lemme guess.....their hosting company uses MS SQL Server products!

Good thing I didn't have to PAY for this. If I had, they'd have lost my business by now.

I'll give 'em one more chance to get it right, but I don't have TIME for this bullshit.

Oh yeah, I just noticed my account has disappeared as well. Oh well, no matter, entering all of my DVDs was a fun endeavor, and it won't be bothersome to do it again.

I'll go with Soggy here; it's fun to add DVDs. Whenever I buy a DVD, I'm always more exicted to add it to my collection page and see how it looks with the rest of the DVDs on the page than to watch it.

You know, you guys have a point here. It's not that I was *angry* at my list disappearing, it was just that it was *gone* quite unexpectedly.

I do tend to enjoy putting in the DVDs I have as much as I enjoy shopping for them, and viewing them. Something about seeing a pattern in what I buy...

I just hope this isn't indicative of a much larger problem, ie, they're having big issues staying 'afloat'.

it's obvious that a few of you need to smoke a blunt, take a shower...whatever it takes to calm down. relax. I've used dvdaf for 2 years and this is the FIRST problem, aside from last weeks new router install, in all this time. when using profiler...it had problems 13 times in 5 months. they are adjusting things for the new gear...it takes time. your dvds have not been erased. and those of you with tummy pains...it's not cancer. give them a break. hell, I donated 50 bucks for the upkeep....and I'm not pissed at all. and if you have never donated to the site...no need to complain...they were working for you...for free.

so twist one up and lets burn.

I concur. The fact that one can't even do a search and find a DVD indicates that there's probably trouble with the entire catalog of titles, which is why you guys can't view your collection. Hell, I can't even login anymore.

I'm sure they'll get it fixed or update us on the progress within the week.

Yah, I'll wait for DVD Afic to get back, I tried that Profiler crap and it wasnt that great. I typed in a title of a DVD and nothing happened. So I sat there and started randomly swearing. I dont like it.

So it is. I'd emailed the Webmaster over there, and just got back this reply:

Quote:
Strange things are happening, we may be reaching the limits of the current environment, apparently the db went down yesterday night at 4AM. I just brought it up and it seems good.
I was able to bring up my list. Everything's back to normal.
WHEW.

Hey, I don't know about some of you, but I'd be willing to pay a regular fee to use this thing, if what they need is bucks in order to prevent this kind of thing from happening again. It works for me quite nicely to have an online database of my collection, especially my Wish List. That alone helps my online DVD shopping tremendously (and gift suggestions among friends and family).

How about you guys? Would you pay a small, reasonable fee to use DVD Aficionado? I already know some of you kids and "poor college students" (hey, I was one, I sympathize) can't always pay for everything, but just assuming you COULD, would you? I'm just curious for myself, I don't work for these guys or anything.

no worries here. I'm 39 and would have NO problem with a little fee for dvdaf. 10 or 20 bucks a year sounds good. I already send a donation so....

DVDAF UPDATE!

Just got this response from the DVDAF webmaster:

Quote:
Well, it would be a bit too "convenient" if the problem were money.

We put a brief explanation/apology on the front page. I'm not sure what the problem is at this point. I put forward in that message my "educated guess".

The main problem we face in DVDAF is too much work. Specially as far as the development of the new site. That is aggravated by the task of maintaining all the titles and user submissions. We have a vision and a plan -- in this new land members are able to be more active, more self-sufficient, and take advantage of the content contributed by each other. However, right now it is a chicken and egg problem.

I do not like the paid membership model. I want the site to attract quality content contributions for the next phases. Going for a quick buck now would work against that objective.

However, we greatly appreciate any support we get from our members :-)

Thanks and please accept my apologies again.

-Ed

BTW: If you find the time to share the above with others it may help to assure them that we are in for the long run, and that the site today is a far cry from what we would like to have.
So there you have it. Nice that these guys care!

"Dear folks, we have been experiencing technical problems and we are investigating the causes. Thursday night the database went down. No data was lost. We suspect that this was a result of a deadlock between an unusually long maintenance task and other regular processes. To those affected by this or the router outage over the long weekend we deeply apologize. We know how frustrating it can feel. Please do not feel alarmed, your data is safe and we will be around for a very long time."

This was posted on the dvdaf homepage. That should clear up everyone's worries.

Well I've been having problems since I registered.

I was trying to import my list and I first noticed that any titles that has an apostrophe does not appear. The worst part is actually that I have tried to load my list twice now, and each time the whole thing freezes once I get to picking which version of Ringu (the original Japanese version) I have. The whole page smears all the titles and I have to re-enter appx. 250 titles. So although I have almost 400 dvd's (they only let you upload 300 at a time), I have no way of uploading them. I already gave up on dvd profiler, which crashed so frequently that it wasn't worth it. I can't even open my profiler database anymore because it won't let me.

They used to offer a database repair file on the DVDprofiler site. I had to use it once because it wouldn't let me into my database. I'm not sure if they still have it for the newer version.
I haven't had any problems entering titles into dvdaf, so I can't help you there.
