Best Hitchcock Film/DVD

What are your favorites? You can go in order of DVD quality and/or movie quality (or you could just name your one favorite).

Out of the 4 I've seen (based on film):

1. Rear Window
2. Psycho
3. Notorious
4. Birds

3. Strangers on a Train
4. The 39 Steps
5. Vertigo
6. Shadow of a Doubt

1. North by Northwest (the transfer is phenomenal and it has some good extras)
2. Rebecca (one of Criterion's best releases)
3. Spellbound (another amazing Criterion release)
4. Notorious (Criterion)
5. The 39 Steps (Criterion)
6. Rear Window (Universal Collector's Edition)
7. Vertigo (Universal Collector's Edition)

Unfortunately, I've only seen one Hitchock film, the Birds. I thought it was a hilariously outdated horror flick, but I do realize its importance in film. Maybe when I have more time, I'll catch up on all those older classic films I missed out on.

I always had trouble ranking Hitchcock. So many. I always thought Vertigo was his most artistic film. North By Northwest one of his most entertaining films. And Psycho one of his most influential films. Not to ignore his work in his earlier years, which was just as brilliant. 39 Steps, Rebecca, Lady Vanishes, Strangers on a Train.

And even in his later years (although some felt his work declined) I thought his films were still excellent.

-Frenzy: (Great writing and acting. Sharp and clever direction)
-Topaz: "The microfilm!!"
-Marnie: "Momma, why didn't you love me?"
-Family Plot: Funny and well-made movie about a fake psychic, and Hitch's last film.

I forgot about Strangers on a Train. That is also a great great film.

I would probably list this over Rope. I'm not sure...

Even though I love the film the way it is, I would love to see a remake, just to see Kevin Spacey in it.

I am always surprised at the amount of love North by Northwest gets. The scene with the airplane is classic, but overall, it just seems like a kind of silly, over-the-top action-adventure flick when compared to some of Hitch's other stuff. I like the movie, but I can't put it ahead of Vertigo, Strangers on a Train and Rebecca.

By the way, for the worst user review of a movie EVER, check out this one for Vertigo

I really need to see more (i.e. all) of Hitchcock's films. He's one of my favourite directors, but I've only seen 10 of his movies.
Of those I've seen, it's hard to rank. But I'll try to rank my personal favourites:

01. Psycho
02. Rear Window
03. Vertigo
04. North by Northwest
05. Strangers on a Train
06. Dial M for Murder
07. The Birds
08. Rope
09. Frenzy
10. The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934 version)

something like that...

Well, for personal liking, Rear Window is my favorite Hitchcock film. I love the DVD also.

But for DVD quality--I have to go with North by Northwest, which is IMO one of the best, if not THE best, transfer of a classic film on DVD.

who has the Criterion Hitchcock box on pre-order? so glad i didn't buy any of em before -- $130CAD -- two of the titles would be about $120, so that was enough justification for me to order (:

I highly recommend you watch any of the Hitchcock films I listed above. Looking at your collection, I would guess that you'd like lots of Hitchcock films.

I don't have it on pre-order because I already have all of the Hitchcock Criterions, but I do recommend the box. Any fan of Hitchcock's early works will be blown away by the quality of these releases.

I've seen nearly every Hitchcock film (and there a whole hell of a lot of them!), and these are my top 5...

1. Dial M For Murder -- I have no idea why I love this film so much. It's really just not as technically wonderful as so many other Hitchcock pictures, but something about it is just so charming to me, and I never ever tire of it.

2. Psycho -- This film can STILL manage to frighten me

3. Rope -- This film is just so simplistically wonderful. It's suspenseful and darkly hilarious all at the same time. Gotta love the homosexual undertones...

4. Shadow of a Doubt -- IMO one of Hitchcock's most wonderfully crafted films. His personal favorite too.

5. Rebecca -- While it may not have been quite as famous or groundbreaking as "North by Northwest", "Saboteur", or "Vertigo", it, like "Dial M For Murder" just has an irresistable charm and ambiance to it that never gets old.

And, of course, the runners-up: Vertigo, Frenzy, The Lodger, The Lady Vanishes, To Catch a Thief, and soooo many others I'm sure I'm forgetting. To be honest, it's been a long time since I watched a Hitchcock film. I saw just about all of them when I was about 13

Arigato,
Brook

Vertigo and Rope are my favorites. Rope was surprisingly sick for being made that long ago (serving dinner guests off of a dead body?!) which is why i loved it.
