Star Trek: TNG Sets Question

Hi,

I have a question about the Star Trek: The Next Generation DVD sets. I plan on getting the whole set of all of them, but I read something about discs available only at particular retailers (Best Buy??)...

Anyways, I would like to get the sets with the extra disc. Are they available any where? I would really appreciate any information.

Thanks so much,

Zack

Best Buy did have some sets that were packaged with an exclusive bonus disc, but not ALL of their sets were. So, good luck finding them there. Also, i believe that Suncoast Video had some of the same sets. those two places were all I knew about.

Yah. That's what I was afraid of...

Are they doing the same thing for DS9?

I really hate these store tie-ins.

Oh well. Thanks for the info.

Good luck getting those extra discs that this point. All of those were "while supplies last" and last time I was at Best Buy, they were totally out of sets that came with something extra. You probably want to hurry if you plan on tracking them down.

It didn't have anything to do with where you bought it. It was not an in store promotion. It was on all box sets that were among the first wave of the release no matter where you got it. It was a promo directly from Paramount that went on as long as "supplies lasted".

Yes they are doing it with DS9 also.

FYI the bonus discs were:

TNG Season 1: CD-ROM - Star Trek Encyclopedia

TNG Season 2: CD-ROM - Star Trek TNG Technical Manual

TNG Season 3: CD-ROM containing two audio books (Crossover and Ship of the Line) in MP3 format

TNG Season 4: DVD with 2 bonus featurettes (Select Historical Data and Inside the Star Trek archives) Runtime: 21 minutes

TNG Season 5: DVD with 2 bonus featurettes (Intergalatic Guest Stars and Alien Speak) Runtime: 29 minutes

TNG Season 6: DVD with 2 bonus featurettes (Select Historical Data and Inside the Starfleet Archives: Sets and Props) Runtime: 31 minutes

TNG Season 7: DVD with 2 bonus featurettes (Special Profiles and Dressing the Future) Runtime: 27 minutes

DS9 Season 1: DVD with 1 bonus featurette (DS9 Scrapbook) Runtime: 14 minutes

All the TNG bonus discs came in carboard sleeves. The DS9 bonues disc is in a cool, slim plastic snapcase. (the first of it's kind I've ever seen) I assume they will all be like this.

I agree with Gigashadow -- I've never seen this type of case before, and it's pretty cool. However there's no place to put the damn thing in the season packaging (you could drop the bonus disk of TNG sets into the bottom of the outer box). And with it's small size, lack of spine, and rounded corners, they aren't going to be very attractive sitting on my SF television shelf.

Perhaps someone will make something like this TNG Supplements Cover for DS9 to put them in.

Man, I want the supplement discs for TNG. If I go to the store, is there any easy way to tell the bonus disc is in there? Like, does it say, "Hey Bonehead, There's A Bonus Disc In Here!"?

Just wondering. Also, if anyone wants to sell their bonus discs, I would be their best friend!!

It DID matter where you bought the set from. ONLY Best Buy owned stores (Best Buy, Media Play, Suncoast, Sam Goody, Futureshope (canada)) have these discs. And they were only available for a limited time. Like someone said before, none of the TNG sets I've seen at Best Buy recently have the extra disc. On the TNG sets you can tell if it has the disc by feeling the back. the disc was placed behind the paper insert, so you can feel the bulge. Plus, most sets had a sticker proclaiming the extra disc (although IIRC some sets that had the sticker didn't actually have the disc).

I wasn't aware that you had to go to a specific store for the bonus discs as "only at Suncoast/Best Buy" appeared nowhere on the outer package.

I just so happened to get all my TNGs at Suncoast and my DS9 at Best Buy. With all the stores you mentioned there sure seemed like ample of opportunities for people to get the extra disc if they bought early. I got all of mine on the day they were released.

Well,

I found all seven seasons in town here with the supplements, but they are $150 per season!!!

Not sure if it is worth it or not, but then again, TNG is on my top 5 list of favorite shows...

MacGyver
Star Trek: TNG
Quantum Leap
The Cosby Show
Family Ties

Oh yah, and MST3K!!

Yeah, the MSRP for those boxes is ridiculous. Another bonus of buying early, on relase at Best Buy they are only $99.99 (which is still too much but better than $150).

exactly. I love TNG, but $150 per is ridiculous. I wanted the extra disc, so I paid a little extra to get that, but $150 is too much. Unless you HAVE to have the extra discs, just buy the sets online or used. Canadian etailers seem to have the best prices on box sets. And some people have reported getting used sets for less than $80 (ebay, half.com, amazon marketplace, etc).

With full seasons of shows like Stargate SG-1 and Buffy available for around $50.00 I have no idea how Paramout justifies the their pricing policy. HBO too for that matter. Not that I've bought any, but their stuff is also like $80.00 to $100.00 a box. What's worse is that an HBO season is 13 episodes at best.

Yep, they were only at Best Buy owned stores. I remember reading that at several different places. I even went to Wal-Mart (for 3 different seasons upon release) because it was closer. Plenty of sets, none with the extra disc. Went to Best Buy...all the sets had it

Sorry man, you are wrong there. I bought one set the day it was released at Wal-mart and it didn't have any extras. I also ordered Season 7 off of a website and got it three weeks before it was set to be released, and didn't get anything extra. Also, I never saw any of the extra dvds on the sets at Target or Suncoast. The only place I ever saw the extra discs was Best Buy, and they always advertised them as exclusives.

I just got all seven sets with bonus discs!!

I got two at my local Suncoast and the rest online.

BTW, I talked to the manager at Suncoast. He said the extra discs were exclusive to their chain of stores, much like the R2-D2 Beneath The Dome thing. He said they were limited though, so even now many Best Buy and Suncoast stores don't have them. Oh well, I am in Star Trek nerd nirvana now. BTW, except for the ones I bought at Suncoast, I got them all for less than $85 per set.

Zack

Blasted, have to get caught up on X-Files now. My wallet is in pain!

Uhhhh...duh. You're a bit late to the game. We coverd that. Did you even bother to read the the entire thread? I don't think so. Read it all before you post.

Either way I already have all 7 sets (from Suncoast) with the bonus discs so it's all pretty much moot to me. I never see any Best Buy advertisements but since Best Buy owns Suncoast....

Nope. I just saw that you were wrong and wanted to point it out to the entire world. If it gets repeated, all the better. Might teach you not to talk about things when you don't have a clue.
