Kung Fu commentaries?
Hey all,
I just watched the commentary on "Master of the Flyng Guillotine" and thought it was excellent. I am aware of only one other Martial Arts movie with a commentary, and I believe it was "Once Upon a Time in China", but it may have been the sequel. I am interested in watching more Kung Fu commentaries, does anybody know if there are others available. Thanks - |

How was Master of the Flyng Guillotine anyway? That movie looks AWESOME; I was planning to pick it up as my replacement for Shiri over at hkflix, but I got Battle Royale instead. The Dragon Inn DVD has a good commentary with Ric Meyers that's definitely worth a listen.

It is AWESOME! Great old-school kung-fu. The commentary was also excellent! Can't go wrong with Battle Royal though. Thanks for the Dragon Inn recommendation, but who is Ric Meyers? |

Flyng Guillotine is not really in the same class as Shiri or Battle Royal.
Flyng Guillotine is old school Shaw Brothers kung-fu, and it's really not the best example of their movies anyway, or at least I don't like it as much as a lot of other films. Shiri is a modern day Korean action film. Quite good actually, even for people that don't normally go for this type of thing. All fans of action movies should give it a try. Battle Royal has been reviewed heavily here in the forum, but it's definately not a "kung-fu" movie, and it's Japanese. Hmmm...my version of Flyng Guillotine doesn't have a comentary. What disc do you have?

Ric Meyers is a biggggg HK movie expert. He's the biggest HK geek I've ever heard.
I've seen Shiri twice already, and I love it; it's a good little homage to Bruckenheimer films, but made twenty times better. I had to return it though because of its misadvertised English subs and DTS track (which is lacks).

Yes, I agree, but "Master of the Flying Guillotine" is. >>Hmmm...my version of Flyng Guillotine doesn't have a comentary. I think I've seen Shiri- its Koeran, right? I thought it was alright, but more of a straight action film. I'm getting myself back into straight Kung Fu flicks, myself. If you like Shiri check out some of Johnnie To's movies like Fulltime Killer, Running Out of Time, and The Mission. But lets stay on topic- Kung Fu Commentaries. Where are they? |

Check out HKL dvds:
www.hongkonglegends.co.uk They are region 2 and PAL, but if you can watch them then they are WORTH it. Almost every single one of their dvds has a commentary by Bey Logan who was the editor of Impact magazine awhile ago and has written books on HK cinema as well. The guy knows everything about everything there is to know about Asian cinema. THe discs are superb, OAR, anamorphic, totally restored and gorgeous prints of classics like Prodigal Son, Magnificent Butcher, Police Story, Legend of a Fighter, etc. Most come with Dolby 5.1. THere are great readable subtitles, and original language/soundtrack and many come with optional english dubb as well. Check em out. If you get the cyberhome 500 (model CH-DVD 500) dvd player at bestbuy for $70 then you are all set to watch HKL. That is what I use to watch mine. |

I recently bought Master Of the Flying Guillutine myself and loved it! I agree the documentary kicks ass. Can anyone recommend any other asian movies in the spirit of MOTFG or Battle Royale?

come on now, Ichi is nothing like those movies. While Battle Royale is one of the most beloved recent Asian Cult movies, Ichi is eqally hated as it is loved. I for one, totally dig it, but I have a really hard time recommending it to anyone that hasn't seen any Miike films yet. |

Looking at your collection it seems as if you have a pretty great collecion already, it has been a while since I was heavily into Kung Fu flicks, but here are some of my favorites off the top of my head. Swordsman 2, Once Upon a Time in China 1 & 2, Police Story 2, Dragons Forever, Master Killer, 6 Deadly Venoms, Tai Chi Master, Iron Monkey, Shogun Assasin, Fist of Legend, and Shoulin Soccer. edit: Unfortunatly I have seen most of these on video and cannot vouch for their quality on DVD, but they are all really entertaining. |

As mentioned before, Hong Kong Legends is a great Region 2 DVD company for Kung Fu films and commentaries, there are many Region 1 DVDs to find as well. Aside from Enter The Dragon (A pretty bad commentary I might add) and the recent Jackie Chan films, Tai Seng has acout 2 dozen old school films with commentary by Ric Meyers and sometimes Bobby Samuels. The films themselves are sometimes so-so (Guillotine is a cut above) but there are some good ones.
There is also the Donnie Yen TV version of Fist Of Fury with Donny and Bey on the commentary. They are getting more and more popular so just start checking around. I have many of these films taped off of TV over 20 years ago when you could only catch them on Kung Fu Theatre. |
