Always buy the Director's Cut where available. It's how the director intended the film to be, before the studio/MPAA censored it.

All films released should be directors cuts. Rarely have I seen a directors cut of a film and said it was WORSE than the other. Rollerball and Impostor were both horrid movies in theatres (at their PG-13 ratings) but were improved (still not good, just improved) in Director's Cut versions.

From everything I've read.... it's just a "Director's EDITION".... not really a new cut. ie: a DVD with more features. I don't believe the movie itself will be any different.

I have the 2-disc Anchor Bay edition and as far as I could tell on the "director's cut" was about 3 extra minutes involving an interrogation. But I'm assuming ther's more stuff out there in Michael Mann's vaults.

They're talking about Red Dragon, not Manhunter

I believe there are 3 versions of RED DRAGON released
on 4/1. A fullscreen version, a widescreen version, and
a 2 disc widescreen version. From what I read, the 2
disc set just has some behind the scenes stuff. I don't
think there are different cuts of the movie between these
DVD versions.

The "Director's Edition" is just the widescreen "Collector's Edition" with a 2nd disc.

Which version is everyone getting? I know the 2disk version will be more expensive but I'll probably go ahead and get that one.

Is this FOX?

Cause if so, when FOX put on the From Hell 2-Disc edition, didn't they call it a "Director's Edition" simply because it had the supplements and such that "the directors wanted" or something.

This could be a mini-line now or something...

Will the 2-disc version have the same movie version as the widescreen 1-disc version?

Thanks for raising this question as I had no idea this was going to be a multi-version release.

Peace....

From the specs, it sound like the Director's Edition is simply the Collector's Edition with a bonus disc. If that holds up, it should have the same transfer, audio, and features as the CE and then some.

Red Dragon is $12.99 this week and I am thinking of picking it up. I know the Director's Edtion is a nice DVD though. Anyone here think the DE is worth over twice the price?

The documentary on the second disc is VERY good. I think it's called a director's journey. It's not mind blowing, but its a personal camera that follows Rater around and you watch him argue for stuff and Ed Norton being hit by flaming sticks. Plus, a suprise visit from a very odd guest! And Ralph Fiennes in a hilarious blooper!

I though it was worth it to have the more complete SE of the movie, but others didn't like the movie enough. I would say, get the SE only if you've seen the movie once and enjoyed it.

In the UK we only got a 2 disc set of Red Dragon (was released late '02/early '03 I think - I finally bought it a few months ago) which is not advertised as a Director's Cut, but it does have the extras on it that have been described in this thread.

AH! Forgot about this... I got the single disc. The 2-Disc was $17 more, and despite being a collector I could not justify $17 for a 30 minute doc about a movie I like a little at best...
