Single Season / Failed TV shows on DVD...
It's seems reasonable that successfull, long running shows such as Star Trek, Buffy, Angel, Farscape, X-Files, Friends etc... would be released on DVD. (I still wonder where that Seinfeld box is...)
What doesn't seem as reasonable is the DVD releases of shows that are technically considered failures. Shows that ran for a season and then were canceled because no one watched them. With the DVD releases of shows such as Sports Night (OK 2 seasons for that one), The Ben Stiller show and My So Called Life, studios seem more than willing to dust off their old shows that no one watched in the first place (hence their cancelation) and release them on DVD. Of course anyone who did watch any of those shows knows the reality is that all three of them were fantastic. This fills me with hope that perhaps more single season failures (that were actually great shows no one watched) will be showing up on DVD rather then just fading into oblivian or languishing in basic cable hell where they are edited to pieces. Shows I'd like to see released: Nowhere Man Space: Above and Beyond Earth 2 Max Headroom The Young Indianna Jones Chronicles The Flash Firefly What failed shows did you all like and would like to have on DVD? (Failed being canceled after two seasons or less) |

Brother's Keeper was an okay show, and that will never be re-run. Hiller & Diller, too. And of course Freaks & Geeks, which seems to be have been replaced Saturday midnights with "My Life is a Sitcom." Hope we get that DVD set sometime soon.

How about
The Lone Gunmen probably never happen because the premiere episode involved a hijacked airliner that was programmed to crash into the World Trade Center Towers. The airliner was hijacked electronically by unspecified elements of the US defense/intelligence community and the blame would be placed on terrorists. The aim was to put the US on a war footing and give power to the defense/intelligence community. Sound familiar? When did it air? Sept 2000??? |

VR.5 was a half season (13 eps.). That definitly counts. mlemmond I can let 7 Days (ran for three years) and Beauty and the Beast (ran for three years) slide but both The Pretender and NY Undercover ran for four years. Can't count those. I'm not talking about just any shows you want on DVD but failed ones. The ones that definitly deserved more time but didn't get the chance. Like I said earlier it's funny how the studios think: Hmmmm.... No one watched these shows when they were on for free, maybe people will want to pay money to own them!! They are in effect catering directly to the original cult audience who watched the show when it aired. Who else would buy these things? Of course had they catered to that core "cult" audience from the begining they never would have canceled the shows in the first place. Also, if I'm letting mlemmonds three year run shows slide then I have to add one of my own: Dinosaurs Last edited by Gigashadow : 03-04-2003 at 07:26 PM. |

OK, it was on longer than one season...
I would be first in line to buy "Pete and Pete " if Nick would release them. Some of the funniest, bizarro world television ever created in the guise of a children's show.
Pipe.

Dear DVD Guys:
Just for my own enjoyment, I've been writing an article suggesting that the hollywood companies check into their "lost" shows like one season flops that did get an audience. I also wrote to Columbia Home Video about it. What I'd like to see are some older failiures: Quark (1978, Richard Benjamin scifi spoof) Police Squad Wizards and Warriors The Critic Dilbert Bring Em Back Alive Legend (1994 with Richard Dean Anderson) Tales of the Gold Monkey The Tic (live action) Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future One of the points I make is that it's better for the companies to make some money from them than none at all. Sincerely, JThree carolyn@dia.net

These are the "failed" shows that I would buy in heartbeat:
7 Days (the "before Star Trek" timeslot that worked for it got taken away soon after I was hopelessly addicted to this brilliant, funny, intelligent show)The Critic Undergrads (Inhumanly incredible! One of the greatest animated shows thst MTV has created, next to The Osbournes)Most of the "Under the radar" MTV animated shows that rareley lasted more than a season, these things were edgy and intelligent, most of the time, and were always a fun waste of time. Celebrity Deathmatch! Really, need I say more? It's Celebrity Deathmatch!![]() I'll second Dilbert, Undeclared, Now and Again, and The Flash, all shows cut down in their prime.

Forgot to Add:
Spy Games (1996, with some unaired episodes) Baby Blues Adventures of Brisco County Jr. The Duck Factory The Flash Firefly Nowhere Man A few shows had unaired episodes before they were cancelledso that could be another incentive to buy season sets. Just don't stand there go to TVShowsonDVD.com , register, and vote for a few of these forgotten shows. Did I mention James Garner's Nichols from the early seventies pre-Rockford Files JThree carolyn@dia.net

I wouldn't consider none of the three shows mentioned above failures. One tv show I'd like to have Season sets of: Tales From the Darkside. I'm not sure if this show was a success or failure but it would be great to own all the seasons on dvd. Add to the fact that Artisan has the rights, season sets of Tales From the Darkside may never be on dvd... ![]() |

Pete & Pete is a great show! I've only recently been able to catch episodes, and it is really hilarious. I'd totally buy that on DVD.
And as for single-season shows... Good Morning, Miss Bliss Saved By The Bell: The College Years (or should that be "year") ![]()

I'll add another show to the list. State of Grace from Fox Family (now ABC Family), which was a really brilliant show that only had a two-season run. When ABC Family cancelled it late last year they gave some half-ass excuse about how "they have a mandate to produce high-quality family programming." State of Grace was and is the very definition of that term, and the best show that has ever aired on the network since ABC took it over from Fox. And yet they pull it and replace it with stuff like "The Last Resort." Yeah, a show about three couples who have had romantic problems and are on the verge of ending their affairs before they come to The Last Resort to decide the fate of their love once and for all is high-quality family programming. Sure. When hell freezes over.

Most of the TV shows I've watched in the past usually get cancelled quickly, but a lot of them seem destined for DVD:
Freaks and Geeks--I think the last time I checked there were over 15 000 signatures in the DVD petition, so maybe we'll see that eventual DVD set after all--I need this show on DVD (with the music intact). The Flash--the Scarlet Speedster was my favorite superhero and while feature-film projects keep stalling, Warner is looking at their TV show catalogue (including the 70s Wonder Woman) for possible DVD release to cash in on the Marvel superhero-to-film craze. I taped most of the episodes when I was a kid and they still hold up well--IMO the best small-screen comic book adaptation. American Gothic--a few years ago there were rumblings of a DVD release, but Universal hasn't been forthcoming. Apparently Sam Raimi is willing to provide specific commentaries and considering his newfound clout, a DVD release would be a no-brainer. Millennium--it's been rumored for a few years, but it looks like Chris Carter's underrated series will finally see a DVD release in late 2003 (according to the Bits). Kolchak the Night Stalker--I've got the two telefilms that preceeded the show on a double feature DVD, but I'd love to have this cheesy but memorable occult series on DVD. Considering the success of The X-Files on DVD, why hasn't Universal clued in? Night Gallery--now that I'm finally collecting The Twilight Zone (love those new sets!), I'd like to have the three seasons of Rod Serling's other anthology on DVD. Again this is a Universal property, so....
