Any Ran reviews yet?

If so, please post a link. Same with Throne of Blood.

I don't think that we'll be seeing any Throne of Blood reviews for a while. It doesn't come out until the end of May. There is a review of the Ran disc that came in the Amazon only set that came out last year at DVDtalk.com's DVDSavant page. It should be exactly the same as the stand alone release. Some one also posted some comparison screen shots on Hometheaterforum. I'll try to look the links up later.

Here's a comparison between the two versions of Ran. Its screen captures are similar to the ones that I refered to in the other post.

Look at how good it looks now! Definite improvement on shots 4 and 5.
I love the menus on the Masterworks edition, too.

Thanks for the link, asphodel!

I remember renting the old Fox/Lorber DVD and my heart broke when I saw the terrible transfer! When I heard that Ran was being re-released I was very cautious. Thank god the film has been restored properly. I can't wait to find a copy!

I watched the old version too. It was such a let down because I knew that it must have looked great when it first came out. This new version may not be perfect, but I'll be glad to have it in my collection. Three new Kurosawa discs in three months! I'm so excited.

It seems like they're a bit overzealous with the digital noise reduction though. The last shot comparison, the Wellspring version seems a bit too, um, sharpened? I guess it might be a mix of DNR and edge enhancement, I dunno, but kind of looks ugly. Still, I shouldn't compalin, because it looks amazing.

Woo-hoo! Thanks for that link. I remember going twice to the theatre to see Ran when it was released. It has never looked good on video, IMO. Those pics from the Wellspring version look scrumptious!

The scales are lifted from my eyes!!!

OH MY GOD!!! I have ONLY seen this film on the Fox/Lorber DVD! (Actually, it was the first one I rented) I have been watching this obviously wretched version for years! Great news indeed!

Thanks for the comparison post. That really sells it!

This and Throne of Blood all at once? I need to go break something at work so that I can get some overtime repairing it or something.......

Did I really type that?

Ooo! Yay! I really wasn't expecting the Masterworks edition to look THAT drastically better than the Fox Lorber, but it sure does. Hooray.

I can't believe I paid $30 bucks for that horrible Fox/Lorber dvd.

This one has commentaries! Even those menus show some love and care.
