The "I'm pissed becuase I couldn't find ____ on street date" thread.

Well knowing how DVD releases go, I know that it is usually though to find some titles at release. Usually the more "obscure" titles such as Metropolis are not always found in bigger stores such as Best Buy, CC, etc.... Recently I think it has gotten even worse....I haven't been able to find ANY of the following at release (or even yet) at ANY stores (Best Buy, CC, Borders, Suncoast...):

Metropolis, restored
The Day the Earth Stood Still
Journey to the Center of the Earth
Labyrinth Superbit
most any Criterion release (Borders and Suncoast are usually the best for retail stores). Even Fear and Loathing was tough to find....The BB I work at only got 2 in.

What have you had trouble finding at release?

Count me in on having trouble finding Criterion releases. When I go visit my friends in New York City they always look at me like an idiot when I spend a ton of money on the somewhat obscure Criterion releases. I've even been asked "Don't they sell DVD's back home??" They don't realize that the stores around here will not carry a DVD unless it sells a million units to the usual gang of mouthbreathers that they cater to.

The same thing here. All I have within an hours drive is Wal Mart and a Circuit City. If I want something not very mainstream I must order it and my online experiences haven't bee real good.

yeah.....I'm finding online to be better and better.

I work at Best buy, so I get a decent discount (Criterions are especially good) but for the most part, after you figure in tax, places like deepdiscount and dvdplanet are almost just as cheap. Take Fear and Loathing for example...It was 80 cents more on dvdplanet than my discount. Shipping is 2.50, so now it is a little more when you figure tax in, but if I were to order other things at the same time, they combine items to save on shipping. Eventually it is almost as cheap, if not cheaper. With 0 charges for shipping at deepdiscount, it is just barely more than my discount yet again. I might be giving up on retail, except when it comes to the big title releases.

Criterions are definitely tough to predict when they'll show up in a store. I lucked out with Fear and Laothing in Las Vegas on release date... but usually I have to wait between 2 and 4 weeks before a local store gets a Criterion I'm interested in.

Today, I went to my local Future Shop looking for the "Three Colors Trilogy" but couldn't seem to find it anywhere. I asked the dude heading up the DVD section of the store if he knew if they got any copies of it in. I had to repeat the title of the DVD 3 times and explain it was a box set with three movies. He said he didn't think so.
He called over the other dude who works the DVD software area and asked if they got any copies in today. I explained that today was the release date, so if they haven't unpakced all the boxes, it might not be on display yet. So this new guy asks me to say the title again, so I do. His response? "I've never heard of that". okaaaay, that's not too surprising, nor is it in any way helpful, bud.
Finally, they go to type in a search for it on the computer. The first dude starts typing it in "3 Colo...". I pipe in, "actually, the "3" is spelled out T-H-R-E-E". Heh. The search comes up with plenty of results, both for the 3-disc-box set and the 3 idividual DVDs you could buy sepeartely... as well as the old VHS editions. I say, yep there it is (thinking it was an in-store inventory computer), but they explain that it just indicates that such a DVD exists, but they don't have any copies in stock or ordered. I ask if they plan to order some, but they don't say so either way. Whatever. I'll be trying HMV on Thursday....and then online.

A shame I couldn't find it, that store is usually really decent when it comes to street dates and actually has a decent Criterion section... I guess it was all by fluke considering the film illiterates that are running the section. Yikes.
Anyone Canadians find it (and is the bilingual cover bad?- I'm considering letting it slide this time...considering they're French films to begin with...)?

So that's my unnecessarily long story. The happy ending is that I decided to pick up the relatively new "Beauty and the Beast: Criterion" DVD.

...still can't find "Living in Oblivion" or "Biggie & Tupac" anywhere locally either....
...considered picking up The Ring, but the Canadian bilingual cover is really horrendous, so I'll have to go the online route for that one..

Fin.

I went to both Media Play and Best Buy to get Army of Darkness: Boomstick. Didn't have it in. I then checked and both said they won't have them in until next Tuesday (yet I know of people who already obtained a copy). I ended up just walking out with a CD instead.

I like it when I have a list of 5 or 6 DVDs that I know they won't have, so I have the employees at Best Buy look up each one and see if they have it.

My exact coversation with a Best Buy store employee today (minus his comments) -

"Say, do you have the Fear and Loating in Las Vegas Criterion collection that came out a few weeks ago?"
"No? How about Metropolis, the Kino release that also came out a while ago? No no, K-I-N-O, not Key No."
"You don't have that either? Hmm, do you The Day the Earth Stood Still? That just came out today, surely you have that."
"Wow, you guys don't get many movies in do you. How about 1984? It's an MGM release that came out today as well."
"Christ, do you think you'll ever get any of these movies in? I mean, it's not like they're limited editions or anything."
"No, that's fine. I'll just go down to Borders, they always have what I'm looking for, thanks for you help though."

I'm always nice to them, but I still get a kick out of aksing for a bunch of movies that for all intents and purposes they should have, but don't. Oh well, it's not like I didn't go away empty handed. I picked up all the movies in my sig

I'm getting really tired of going to Walmart (the only retailer in my home town) and finding only modified aspect ratio releases of almost EVERYTHING. I wanted to buy One Hour Photo last weekend and all I could find was about a dozen copies of fullscreen. They even have a fullscreen release of Office Space. I didn't even know a fullscreen release of that existed!

I'm thinking of writing to the manager. It won't help, but it might make me feel better. I know these stores are the same around the country.

My Wal-Mart is the same. I went this weekend to go look for Stargate: UE, and it was out of stock, so I thought I'd get One Hour Photo. They had at least 2 dozen copies, and they were ALL in fullscreen. I ended up talking to the manager because I was so pissed, and he said there's nothing he can do about it. Fuck Wal-Mart.

I'm still waiting for my Three Colors Trilogy. I ordered from DVDplanet . The individual releases were in last week, but they didn't get the boxset in until yesterday. I considered cancelling it (because it hadn't shipped when I spoke with them on the phone), but I didn't want to waste my time at Best Buy or end up paying a few dollars more at Borders. I almost got a copy on Friday because it showed up a "in stock". They had them in the back and the lady was going to get me one but another guy realized that they weren't due out for a few days and ruined my fun.

My fiancee found a copy of the Three Colors trilogy boxed set at Future Shop after work today. She didn't tell me if it was difficult to find in the store. The bilingual cover is really no worse than any of the past Alliance Atlantis versions of Miramax/Buena Vista titles.

Future Shop is actually quite decent in Calgary (at least the Northwest store)--I've been able to find most of the new-release DVD titles I want. Anime and Criterion is hit and miss, however, so when I'm looking for a more comprehensive selection, I've got two favorite indie DVD stores at my disposal (try finding Kwaidan or Loves of a Blonde or the Starblazers boxed set at Future Shop--ha!).

When the Best Buy I called didn't have any to sell yet, I didn't bother checking anywhere else. I did go to Borders for... other reasons ... but it wasn't there either. So I just preordered it from Amazon. I just hope that they don't decide to wait for Roger Rabbit to come out to because they combined the orders into one price package. I don't know how that stuff works. There were two different shipment dates though...

Our Wal-Mart has always been very good about getting both versions-until OHP was released, that is. I asked the guy about it, and he said that's all that movie comes in. Considering that they had WS versions of The Four Feathers and City by the Sea, I actually think this could just be a case of miscommunication between the studio and the person in charge of ordering what the store sells.

Even though I had already ordered the DTS Road to Perdition (since I knew they wouldn't have it-and I was right), I wanted to see if OHP was just a fluke or a sign of a change in their policy. Well, the next week, they did get the WS version of RTP in addition to the FS version, so I haven't written a letter of complaint-yet.

I kind of miss the good old days when there weren't that many DVD's being released each week-not to mention dual releases which means dual inventory for the stores that do carry both. I think that's part of the reason why these stores don't get certain titles. They only have so much shelf space, and the latest Olsen Twins movies or other straight-to-video crap just has got to take space away from somewhat obscure titles that have limited interest from the average customer.

The Wal-Mart I stopped by while I was hunting down AoD had maybe 100 copies of The Ring. All full screen. I couldn't believe it. And they had such a tiny selection of other DVDs too, I'm never going there again.

I've gotten really frustrated with my local Circuit City (Fullerton, CA).

I don't have much of a problem if a certain store doesn't have each and every title on release day in stock. However, I would expect them to have in stock each and every disc that they advertise.

I went to my local Circuit City today in search of Star Trek IV and The Ref, both in their Sunday ad, and both saying in stores on Tuesday, March 4th. I found neither...in fact, the only two new releases they had were The Ring and The Osbournes. Their DVD stock has been going downhill for months. I used to be able to go in there on release day and find everything I needed. Now, I go in there and I'm lucky to find anything I'm looking for. Their "New" Release section has titles that came out almost 2 months ago (Like Bourne Identity and Signs).

It's a joke! I can forgive them for not having every single title the day it comes out, but to not have the titles that they advertise is almost criminal. And even if they do have it somewhere, the fact that they don't put it on the shelf is just as bad.

I shouldn't have to ask someone if they have a certain title. If it isn't where it's supposed to be, why should I buy it? I won't...if it's not in plain sight, I walk out the store and take my business elsewhere that week. I went across the street to Target and picked up Star Trek IV (cheaper than CC), but still couldn't find The Ref. Earlier in the day I went to Fry's and grabbed Talent For The Game and The Day The Earth Stood Still, but no sign of The Ref there either.

But I'm not upset at Target or Fry's, they didn't SPECIFICALLY advertise that they would have The Ref for $8.99 on Tuesday, March 4th. Circuit City did, and that's the problem.

I saw tons of AOD at my Best Buy, but I passed it up. There is nothing new on that disc, and if I bought it, it would be my 4th version. I also found Stepfather 2 and Quest for Fire at Best Buy. I found TDTESS at Borders on Saturday for $12.99. Looks like I will have to hit Costco for Journey to the Center of the Earth.

I could find "The Day the Earth Stood Still", "Ringu", or "Labyrinth (Superbit) at the Target stores in the area (I had gift cards for Target). I ended up having to order them online (thank god that Target.com uses Amazon.com for inventory too).

And stores wonder why online sales have increased so much.

Silly me, wanting the movies I want on the day they are released.

I've had plenty of trouble trying to find not even really obscure titles, just things that could be considered like just slightly un-mainstream. A funny thing that happened to me was that I went into my local FYE to buy Stargate UE since no one else had it (and this is in the huge shopping area that has a Circuit City, Best Buy, etc.). Now this is the same store where I bought Angel S1 two weeks early, and where they usually put out at least three or four titles early. CDs too. So, I get up to the counter and the guy actually calls over a manager because he's not sure if the frickin movie is out yet! Good time to start trying to be vigilant!
Anyway, I've been finding that the best place to get harder-to-find movies is Borders. I got Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast and Cradle of Fear there (CoF was $2 cheaper than I've seen it online, too!).

For the past couple of months, I've had some real frustrating transactions with B&Ms.

BestBuy is only stocking J6P titles; the kind of stuff you find at Wal-Mart. (OK, a little hyperbolic, but not that far from the truth!)

But what's really got me miffed is Borders-especially regarding release dates. I called ahead (end of Jan) to make sure they were getting Mildred Pierce (released 2/4) in, Borders sez OK, we'll hold 1 of the 2 copies we're getting in for you. I tell a friend, he calls to reserve the other copy (on Feb 6), and they tell him that its in and he can pick it up next week when it's released! I call back, tell them no, no, street date is 2/4 and I'm coming to pick up my copy. They say OK, I go to the store, give them my money and get the movie and just to let me know how swell they are they tell me that they violated the release date to keep me happy. I produce my print-out of Amazon's page with the available date highlited and they look at it, scratch their heads and tell me it 'must be a special deal for Amazon'. I say no, cos I've read about other people getting their copies at other B&M retailers on the internet and therefore...something is wrong with Border's computer system. They look at me and smile cos I'm obviously a lunatic that doesn't know that Border's computer system runs the trilateral conspiracy and therefore the rest of the planet and could never make a mistake.

Will post Borders rant, part deux, later.

Tim

Border's release dates revisited...

So, a couple of weeks later, Lion's Gate Signature series is released (2/18). I hear through one of the forums that Wal-Mart is selling Monster's Ball. So I pick that up (pre-street, actually). Then, I'm in Best Buy on the 18th and I spot Eve's Bayou and I pick that up. Ask the BB sales associate abt Amores Perros & he can't figure out what language I'm talking (probably my fault) and so I stroll over & pick up the Studio Home Ent release from ought-one ($6.00 higher price than new release!) and hold it up beside the Eve's Bayou release and so he goes to his crt and informs me that BB will not be carrying the Lion's Gate version. Oh well, there's always Borders. So a couple of days later I'm in Borders, and I don't see Amores Perros on the shelf & I ask the sales clerk & she checks the computer & they have it & would I wait while she goes out back to check.

She comes back and tells me that they do in fact have three copies but they are set up on next week's 'new release' display. I walk over and pick up LG's Eve's Bayou off the shelf & I sez, this and Amores Perros were released same day. She sez that's all well & good, but she'll hafta get her manager's approval to take AP off next week's 'new release' display. And her manager will be back in an hour.

So, I have to make another trip to pick it up.

So please, please, please, o mighty Border's computer, get yo' stuff together!!

As far as what titles a store is going to stock, I just wish I could fathom the logic...

Gentleman's Agreement, but not The Day The Earth Stood Still

I have a sneakin' suspicion that BB & Border's have replaced a purchasing agent with a 386 IBM or something cos some of the disks that they stock &/or promote don't seem to be any more likely to sell than titles they pass on.

Over & Out,
Tim

I work PT at Borders and I will agree with you that the dates in the system are not always 100% accurate. The main problem, however, is that the product does not always seem to make it out on the trucks for delivery on time. Therefore if a late arriving title from the previous week comes in with the next week's new releases, it will stay in the back until Tuesday unless there is an employee like me who keeps up with all the dates. We get our multimedia orders on Thursdays, and I have pulled out several of the titles mentioned above when I knew they were already in release.

I thought this thread might be of interest to those who are fuming that about the MIA Disney titles from 5/20 (ie. The Rescuers and The Love Bug).

No single titles I can think of right now however I'm pissed about 95% of the movies that come out are near impossible to find here in Canada on street date (unless it's a "new" movie). There have been times when they only get one or two new releases and that pisses me off!
