Invasion of the body snatchers
Hoping someone can help!
I'm after this movie (the original 1956 version) and can only find this issue, from Republic's Silver Screen Classics line. Apparently Artisan re-issued this last year, but I can't find it anywhere, just the earlier Silver Screen Classics version. Anyone know of this disc? I've seen one on eBay, but would like to know the differences before I buy, as I don't want to buy a bootleg (I find it hard to believe that the ONLY version carried by retailers is the Silver Screen one with that text running down the side, as opposed to a newer edition). Here's the Republic edition: http://images.amazon.com/images/P/07...1.LZZZZZZZ.jpg The Artisan edition just has the image full-size, without the Silver Screen Classics, but are they the same disc, and are the back covers similar?

Thats the only version i've seen of the film in stores. It's OOP i think & getting hard to find sadly.I wish i picked it up when i saw it at Wal-Mart last Halloween. They quickly got rid of there horror/sci-fi titles after that which really sucks i think.
Anyway theres a good chance the Aristan release is the same.If not...becareful since i don't know for sure.Yet Artisan has been reissueing plenty of films in pan & scan only lately! A good example.I just saw a copy of The Cassandra Crossing at Best Buy tonight.Only difference was while it had the same over as the old OOP Image release. It was P&S only from Aristan!! Meanwhile the OOP Image release was widescreen only, though bare bones. How i wish i picked this up back then! Another title Tree's Lounge which is a Artisan title was original released in widescreen with extra features namely a commentary. That may have been the only feature. But nonetheless...Aristan reissues the title P&S only & bare bones! Now if the reissue was a Republic release like the original Silver Screen version. Then it would be just a repackaging of the original dvd. They did the same with It's A Wonderful Life.First release had the Silver Screen logo...while the THX cover was the exact same dvd featurewise! |

I have the Silver Screen Classics disc that you refer to.
From the back cover: Features: "Presented in the original theatrical release version. Original theatrical format of 2.35:1 aspect ratio. Complete digitally re-mastered version of the black and white film from the original film negative. A special interview with Kevin McCarthy Full length pan and scan version also included."(on side 2) Hope this helps. JohnN |

I also have the Republic release, and it's a very good transfer, in WS as noted on the jacket. The only disappointment I had is that when they said "original negative," I let myself believe that it was the original version without the studio-mandated prologue and epilogue. It's the theatrical release, but still very good.
