Life is Beautiful: SE DVD
I just saw on www.dvd.com that the Life is Beautiful: Special Edition is due in November for $39.95. Can we hope that this will be anamorphic like Shakespeare in Love?

We can hope for anything. I personally hope a BMW 540i is sitting in my driveway when I get home, but I doubt it will be there.
Anyway, a little more seriously, I remember when the Miramax announcement came about SIL being anamorphic, Miramax also stated the intention to release other anamorphic transfers, and LIB was on their short list. So I'm very hopeful... -- Stephen |

What I'd like to know about Life Is Beautiful is, can you choose the original language with English subtitles? It irritates me to no end that Miramax/Disney decided to dub english over the original. A dub can NEVER recreate the emotion of the native language. I saw this in theatres and cannot see why they made that decision...does Disney really think that the majority of dvd owners are dumbed down Americans who would scoff at getting it if it was only subtitles. I sincerely hope they give the consumer the choice of choosing...I'm tired of Di$ney deciding to put on their disks what they think we would cram down our throats and thank them for!

The DVD Daily newsletter (http://www.dvd-daily.com/issues/gf332/) says that this disc is "bare bones"... I, for one, sincerely hope Di$ney doesn't think "Life is Beautiful" is an animated classic... and I'd better be getting some extras (and hopefully an animorphic transfer) on a $40 disc. Also, if it is non-animorphic, it'll be the only '98 Best Picture nom that is!

I got the LiB disc yesterday. Not really a special edition IMHO, and non-anamorphic, although the picture looks fine on my admittedly non-state-of-the-art system. Good news is the default setup is Italian w/ English subtitles, which is the way to see this movie. The English soundtrack is available (although you have to go through the menus - I HATE it when they disable the audio track change button!) but I could only take 30 seconds of it - it's HORRIBLE!!. It's a good demonstration if you know someone who still thinks it's better to hear dubbed English instead of the original language!
Haven't had a chance to look at the supplements (featurette, trailer, TV spots). All in all, it would have been a decent disc at $10 less list. Unfortunately, BV delayed so long in publishing the details of this "Special Edition" that it had shipped before I could cancel my pre-order... ^$@%#%$@^ Di$ney... Oh well, it's still a great movie.
