T2: Extreme DVD.. info/with new video transfur!!!!

According to Video Store Magazine (3/18/03):

"James Cameron speaks!

The director contributes a rare feature-length audio commentary in T2: Extreme DVD, Artisan Home Entertainment’s third disc outing with Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day, one that surpasses the supplier’s two prior editions in terms of transfer and extras.

The two-disc set is due in stores June 3 at $29.98. Prebook is May 6.

Terminator 2 has received a new 1080p high-definition anamorphic widescreen transfer for the Extreme edition, as well as a frame-by-frame restoration that Artisan says makes the 1991 hit look better than when it premiered in theaters.

The version presented in the set is the special edition version of the movie that contains 16 minutes of footage that did not appear in theaters.

Joining Cameron in the audio commentary is co-writer William Wisher.

Special features in the set include an Extreme Interactive Mode, providing behind-the-scenes footage and graphic commentary providing insight into decisions during the film’s shoot.

Other features include “No Feat But What We Make,” a new documentary highlighting T2’s role in the development of digital effects and modern filmmaking; “T2: On the Set,” a retrospective montage that includes rare production footage; “Infiltration Unit Simulator and T2 FX Studio,” a primer on image “morphing” that allows one to graft one’s own head shot onto a T800 or T1000 Terminator; and “Skynet Combat Chassis Designer,” with which one can construct and field-test a Terminator fighting machine.

The movie disc will include a Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround EX audio track and a Dolby headphone audio track. "

Monster: Thanks for posting that new information. It does sound like they're putting more effort into this than everyone was expecting. Regardless, I don't think that I'll upgrade my copy right now. I enjoy the film, but it isn't a personal favorite of mine. I'm content with the UE transfer. It would be my guess that T2 will be one of the first HD DVDs (like it was with D-VHS). If I upgrade it, that's when it will happen. Don't get me wrong, I'm not giving up on the current format or anything like that. I'm just content with what I have now. This title is bound to see constant re-releases, so I think I'll hold off until something truly stunning comes along.

So it won't have the theatrical version? If that's the case then its all the more reason for me to keep my UE. Of course I'd keep the UE anyway since it is a great set and I never really felt it was missing anything.

I won't upgrade but I will probably make an addition.

I already have the original T2 DVD and the UE DVD so I wasn't planning on getting this new EE DVD. However this one has a commentary from JC who is probabaly one of my top 5 favorite film makers. I also happen to think that T2 is one of the best action/sci fi films ever made. The commentary from Cameron and Wisher is enough for me to get it.

Of course I won't be giving up either of my other two T2 DVDs. I'm keeping them too as I see no reason to get rid of them. Doing so woul dbe giving up features that the EE does not have.

I had guessed early on that it would be hard for them to have topped the UE DVD and as it turns out, I don't think they did. The fact that they upped the resolution of the picture is only good if you have a TV that will display that kind of output. Most don't (probably near 95%) so that's hardly something to get excited over. Those with standard sets are likely to notice no differnce at all in the picture as the picture on the UE was near perfect. Same with the sound. UE has DD EX and DTS ES. EE only has DD EX. (who really cares about the headphone track? can you say "useless"?)

No.

That's the special extended edition. This DVD will only have the special edition. Missing will be the T1000 searching John's room and the ending that has Sarah in the future as an old woman.

The 1080p resolution is the transfer master, not the resolution of the DVD, which will be the standard 480p. I don't know if there's a set or video processor out there in the consumer space that can display 1080p (as opposed to 1080i). Over-the-air HDTV is 1080i. Even the HD transfers of movies that the studios use to make the DVD version have been 1080i. This 1080p transfer is the first time I've heard of a studio using the progressive format. Maybe it'll be a new trend.

The new version sounds great, but I don't see a reason to upgrade until I upgrade to a hi-def TV and a progressive scan player, which is probably at least a couple of years off for me. Who knows? By that time, that may have a Tricked Out Extremely Extreme version to come out by then.

My sentiments exactly. I'll be waiting for reviews first.

It could end up being like the Chris Nolan commentary that we were all hoping for [on the initial Memento release]. We all hoped that he would talk about the creative decisions involved in making the movie, but he just describes what's on screen. Oh well.

T2 is one of the only films I'd double-dip for. I got the UE the first day it came out back in 2000, and will be doing the same now for the Extreme Edition. Can't wait.

Not sure if that was a joke but... you aren't going to see what the 1080p transfer looks like. You are going to see what the 1080p transfer downconverted to 480i and possibly then upconverted (depending on DVD player and TV) to 480p looks like.

I won't be upgrading. The only potential benefit would be the commentary, but since I'm perfectly happy with the presentation of the film on the UE, and I really like having the option of the three versions, I don't see any point in buying this a third time. Not just for a commentary. I can't imagine what he'd have to say that I wouldn't have heard in all the supplemental material already provided.

Well, T2:UE is pretty darn loaded as it is. Many people will not upgrade I am sure.

So the James Cameron commentary is pretty vital in order to get people to upgrade. And it better be a screen specific commentary as well.

The Extended Edition was just fine. The Super Special Edition with the Sarah Conner future ending just didn't cut it.

Also, with this streeting in June and T3 premeiring in July, this would be a safe bet to have a movie ticket inside.

It's gonna take both the Cameron commentary and/or a movie ticket to sway a lot of buyers.

I just sold my UE (w/ metal case ^_^) about a month ago because I realized that I just never watched this movie, so I highly doubt I'll get the mega-ugly-dsc-art-equipped "Extreme edition". I might rent it to hear this commentary. Might.

I think there will be a good number of people that will double
(or triple) dip for this set because of the "new transfer" and
the new commentary track with Cameron and Wisher.
I wonder why the new set doesn't have the DTS track.

Same here. The only commentaries I ever lisen to are for deleted/extended scenes to hear why a scene wasn't included in the film or whatever else they have to say about them. I have yet to watch a movie & listen to the commentaries. Hell, I'm lucky to have time enough to watch the movie & check out all of the other special features. However, I would pick this up if it had the theatrical & special extended versions though (& T3 movie ticket). If I can find it ultra cheap then a purchase is possible but I won't give up my UE.

The only way I'd buy this again is if the reviews say that the transfer is vastly better than the UE and that the commentary is really really insightful. If not, I'll pass on it. But if there's a movie ticket in there...

IMO the UE has a pretty much flawless transfer. A new transfer might be a slight better, but there's no possible way that film can look drastically better than the UE.

Uhh...I wouldn't call it flawless. There were some color balance problems and a definitely obvious use of edge enhancement that gave the transfer a slightly harsh look (don't get me wrong, it was still very good but there was definitely room for improvement). Great for the time, but not flawless.

The jury's still out with me. I like the idea of a Cameron commentary and a better transfer but the exclusion of a DTS (the UE DTS was truly a thing of beauty) track and the theatrical cut of the movie are BIG minuses. I'll wait for the reviews.

That was my error. I read to fast. I didn't realize the original post said 1080p and not 1080i. Still, my theory holds. Not a lot to get excited about.

I've never heard anything that was less then facinating come out of JC's mouth. Not only his he one of the most knowledgeable techincal film makers of our time but he has a real passion for all his projects. Even his Discovery Channel documentary "Expedition Bismarck" was amazing. I don't think you have to worry about him giving you a literal blow by blow description of what you are seeing on the screen. No doubt he'll have lots more to say.

Also, DVDFile is saying this release will have an "endoskeleton" metal case.

I pretty much refuse to buy this. I can understand new versions if you have something to add, but when they labled the last one the ULTIMATE edition, that should have been it. Putting out another one just shows how hypocritical it all is.

No more, I say! This far, no further!!

They could at least include the GnR music video that was on the LD box set...

Oh well, maybe they don't have rights to it anymore cause the music label wants it for a video compilation or something... no big deal. I've got it, I just wanted it on DVD.

I guess the video isn't ultimate OR extreme enough to make it on the sets...

I'm still with the SE LaserDisc box set that came out in the mid/late 90s.

I don't watch T2 that often anyway, but I got the THX edition of T1 on laser and stuck it in that box with it (fits nicely).

I think when T3 comes out on disc, we'll see a nice trilogy box set (if the three studios - MGM, Artisan and WB - can work it out).

I'd buy that one.
