This is so sad. Especially considering how good things were starting to look recently with David Lynch dvd releases. (Eraserhead, Wild At Heart coming soon)
What makes it even more upsetting is the idea that a different company releasing the 2nd series of a tv series (when they didn't release the 1st) seems kind of unlikely.

Read the language, guys. "As far as 2003 is concerned, that is correct."
Well, DUH. Artisan is going to release them, because the demand is there. The Season Two laserdiscs are going for $80 and up on eBay, so it's a question of figuring out how to sell them. They blew it on the Season One release; $60 for seven episodes turned out to be too much.
My bet; we get it in two parts, priced at $50 apiece, in 2004. Especially if "Wild at Heart" sells well.

Theta, I'm certain this isn't about strategy.

They would be selling it, RIGHT NOW, if they could. It must be outside of their control.

They either lack the resources (like someone's availabity to do a supplement, or a key piece of the show master), or else there is a rights issue that came up (license, music rights, someone wants a bigger piece of the pie, etc.).

In fact, what Gord (he runs TVShowsOnDVD) said at the bottom of the news item sounds more plausible. I've heard Paramount owns the pilot now, why wouldn't they now own the rest of the series? Maybe the issue is with them.

Just a theory but ive heard that Lynch is definetly preparing another Twin Peaks movie but nothing is set yet. So maybe they are delaying it (in case there's a movie) to tie-in with the new movie?

So any word on this for next year? I figured since we're approaching the end of this year, maybe there was some news.

I've only seen the first season, so I'm really dying to see the rest.

I doubt any announcement is coming soon.
Nobody even seems to know who has the rights.... Artisan? Paramount? Universal?
There are petitions out there, but no moves have been made by any studios, nor do the petitions specify exactly who needs to release it...

Besides wondering about S2, I had put off buying the region 0 pilot because I know the sound is sped up a bit (darn PAL), but I may have to cave soon. We may never get a region 1 release of it at this rate.

I can't say I'm too surprised, either. Since the first set was so DRASTICALLY reduced in price, one must assume they had a glut to get rid of. We can only hope Paramount (or whoever holds the rights now...) knows what a nice profit they can make if they meet the demand that WE know is out there.

Yeah, get that. It's not nearly as sweet transfer-wise as the Season 1 set, but it's all we got and are likely to have. Besides, the PAL speedup is (to me) barely noticeable.

I agree. If you are a Twin Peaks fan, for sheer image quality, the disc looks pretty nice actually. However, if you a Twin Peaks NUTJOB (like myself) the sped-up sound will drive you bugfuck if you pretty much have every pause and every cadence burned in the ol' gray matter.

To be honest, at first I thought it was just because I possibly forgot that Kyle's voice might have changed between filming the pilot and the 1st episode (puberty will do that to you, I suppose...), but then when I noticed it with other actors, I knew something was up.

Again, however, the region 0 release might be all we see and aside from some faster speeches and music cues, it's a must have if you dig the Peaks.

The only time I've seen the pilot is via the VHS tape, and that was quite a while ago. So maybe I'll scour ebay or half.com and buy the thing. May tide me over a tad until S2.

Let's just say that multiple parties are claiming ownership or related rights issues where Twin Peaks is concerned. From what I've been hinted at, it's a mess.

Let's just say that I've put this one from my mind. If something gets moving on it, great. We may be up to HD-DVD by then, though. I'd be the most surprised person on the block if things got resolved quickly.

An update from TVshowsonDVD... sounds grim to me... EVERYONE SHOULD GO BUY THIS NOW TO TURN IT AROUND GOD DAMMIT!!!!

Quote:
In a month we'll be reaching the two-year anniversary since Twin Peaks - Season 1 hit retail stores, to vast critical acclaim. Everyone agreed that this was a high-quality DVD release; with a beautiful job done of remastering (resulting in some of the sharpest video among TV-on-DVD sets ever seen), plus many terrific supplements (read our own review here). Fans who purchased the first season - whether old fans or new to the show - just could not wait to get the second season, and resolve the multiple cliffhangers which ended the first.

The problem, according to our exclusive discussions with Artisan, is that there just weren't enough of you. TVShowsOnDVD owner Gord Lacey recently spoke to the studio, where it was finally revealed to him that sales figures for the first season - while decent - just were not profitable enough to cover the high production costs of the Season 1 set.

There have been other TV-DVD releases, which didn't sell enough to justify continuing (Columbia's The Larry Sanders Show and Fox's The Mary Tyler Moore Show are the best-known examples). As with those, Artisan couldn't make the numbers make sense for moving forward with a Season 2 release. Especially given the general consensus that the second season went "downhill" after the Laura Palmer murder was solved. They tried and tried, as is evidenced by all the rumors we've heard for two years. It just hasn't worked out, though.

We've heard from a significant number of consumers that they don't want to purchase first seasons of any show until the studios demonstrate that they are willing to release further seasons, so they (the buyers) don't get caught without the full run of a TV Show. Gord and I have long maintained that this is a bad strategy for consumers, since studios definitely won't continue to release product that nobody's buying. Twin Peaks seems to have fallen victim to this curse.

There are still perhaps a couple of hopes, though. Here are some facts: Lion's Gate has recently bought Artisan for $160 million. And Paramount owns overseas rights to Twin Peaks - Season 2, and had previously indicated that it would be brought out in different foreign markets (Germany for instance)...but release dates haven't ever been named, and those releases seem to have similarly stalled. Put these facts together, and maybe we have a future where Lion's Gate can perhaps figure out a budget strategy that works to reduce production costs by using resources they bring to the table, and then maybe Lion's Gate/Artisan can work out a deal with Paramount to jointly fund the project, so that each studio can profit in their different markets. I should quickly point out, though, that this is a LOT of "maybes" and wishful thinking, and that to our knowledge the named studios have discussed no such plans. They are possibilities, nothing more. But the hope IS there.

We'll have to wait and see if it's still possible to save Agent Cooper's life, and also find out who killed Laura Palmer...stay tuned, and if anything develops on the Twin Peaks front, we'll get word to you. In the meantime, drink a damn fine cup of coffee, have a donut, and go get off your holster and buy the Season 1 set. Already have one? Good...the holiday season is coming, so it's a great opportunity to give one to a friend! Renewed sales can only help.

dugpa.com also has this story and a link to Lions Gate. They encourage you to send an email asking for them to release season 2. I just sent one myself.

For those interested.

Man I hope they release it. As I probably already stated in this thread, I've never seen season 2. I thought the picture and sound quality of the S1 set was remarkable, and was really looking forward to another set.

TVShowsOnDVD has an update on this whole thing. It mentions the R4 release, and also points out that the early sales numbers for Season 1 might not have told the entire sales story.

There have been so many red herrings regarding the mythical S2 set that's it's hard to believe anything. Thanks for the link, Unicorn! I believe that S2 will eventually be released here in North America. After all, the A/V quality and presentation of the S1 set set the standard for many TV-on-DVD sets. We Twin Peaks fans have to keep our fingers crossed--c'mon Artisan, it's only one more season and there's a demand for a DVD set, so work up some marketing and creative chutzpah!

Sadly, no new infornmation provided. Still no plans for a Region 1 release. Alhough it does sum up all the complications and process nicely.
