1984 (MGM) Recommendations???

i almost picked this one up today while out shopping, but decided against it since i have never seen it before. the novel is one of my favorite pieces of literature, but i am always afraid to watch a film based upon a novel that i love.

so, is this film worth the $14.99? just curious,

if you love the book, you should RENT it. I love this movie, but it's not a verbatim translation of the book.

I picked it up blind (and I've not gotten around to reading the book, despite it's having been collecting dust on my bookshelf for five years.. ), and watched all the way to the last 15-20 minutes of it, at which time I decided it was time to go to bed and finish it later, when I'd actually be able to follow it. I enjoyed what I saw, and I'm glad I picked it up. Now I've just got to get around to finishing it.

Then again, I'm a sucker for a good dystopian future story..

I grabbed this blind and I am very happy with it.
It was made in such a way that makes it quite timeless in feel.
It does the book justice, and I could not imagine a better version
being made. The acting performances are all spot on for what you might expect based on the book.

Worth viewing, and in my opinion, very much worth owning.

When watching this film in tangent with the current world events, it's odd that even though this is ultimately a story about communism...Orwell's strory really does fit in with any power seeking regime (US).

take a gander!

This probably isn't going to matter much to you since you haven't seen the movie yet, but the version of this movie on DVD is slightly different than previously-issued video copies in that it is entirely missing the Eurythmics' work on the soundtrack.

I watched it the other night for the first time since, well, 1984 and I had this weird feeling that it was different. I looked at some of the Amazon.com reviews and that confirmed my suspicions.

It's still a fantastic movie, but it is an even bleaker experience without some of the music cues.

That's odd, because I could have sworn I saw them mentioned in the opening credits (a friend even commented on it).

I have the LD (but not the DVD) and will check on this later tonight.

I saw the Eurythmics in the opening credits when I first watched this and I was holding my breath because I could not imagine their music involved in the story in any good way...
After the movie was through, I had realized that I heard nothing resembling Eurythmics and this made me quite happy.

The music in the film as it is on the DVD is quite good, and quite fitting....someone made a good choice in leaving it out...unless it was a rights issue?

either way:
1984 + no Eurythmics = very good
